from any era in history would be greatly diminished; society would be without soul, without art,
without music, without theatre, or any form of fictional writing and storytelling. Haviland writes
"art reflects the cultural values and concerns of a people. This is especially true of the verbal arts –

Often seen as a luxury item, the Arts sometime is overlooked in the level of absolute necessity it has
on society and the people within that society to learn, grow and communicate and understand his/her

This paper will criticize the Guardian, an oil painting on canvas by Valton Tyler, created in 1973 and
is displayed by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, TX. The painting
illustrates unusual structures that utilize a variety of geometric and organic shapes. The irregular
curvilinear form and shapes of the structures has this whimsical fairytale meets mechanical futuristic
feel to it– or Dr. Seuss meets Wizard of Oz. The amorphous shaped clouds in the melancholy sky

The first thing that came to mind when I thought about what the artwork is representing, was a
little green plant sprouting through the cracks of concrete. This thought I had is like the little
leaves sprouting from the structures in the painting. I was reading an article the other day about
how long mankind has been here in the timeline of the earth and how much we have destroyed in
the small amount of time we have resided on earth. I feel it is vital to respect and appreciate
mother nature, but our world does the exact opposite. Mankind has caused global warming,
polluted the oceans and air, destroyed 50% of forests and have caused a variety of species to go

nature to provide us with food anymore either. Why farm when we can concoct our diet in a lab

I used pencil in order to create a high contrast with the shadows and highlights and I used colored
pencils and pen to create both subtle colors and a surreal effect. I am also influenced greatly by
the stories I watch. My mandala art piece is filled with themes from the show RWBY, which is
about a young girl and her team of friends battling monsters and corruption in a dangerous, but
unique world. RWBY inspired me to take a more fantastical approach to my story, building a
world with its own laws, countries, and history. I made this piece into a mandala in order to
expand into different art styles. With the radial design I created a type of abstract symbolism,

outlooks. But what is art? It is an expression of human emotions and creativity. This can be through

There is a defining line between what is art and what is not. For it to be art, it must go through three
steps. They are: thought process of the artist's process of construction, self–evaluation, and critical

The thought process is a major step in art which is often overlooked. The thought process is not
simply stating that you are going to draw an apple, then proceed to draw it; it's a feeling or emotion

The era of accountability has heavily swayed public schools towards narrowing the curriculum
across content and disciplines. Student test scores have become the measure in which states,
districts, schools, classrooms, and teachers are deemed "excellent." Also, many schools have been
confronted with budget cuts that determine the content offered in schools. Unfortunately, arts
programming across the United States' K–12 public education has been minimized and/or not given
the proper attention it deserves. To strengthen the argument for arts education, researchers have
developed the integration of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to curriculum and lesson
planning. I argue that the integration of the arts in classroom curriculum with early childhoods
students can provide benefits not only for students but teachers. Arts education centers on allowing
both students and teachers to engage in creativity and bring out their multiple intelligence. I
recognize four reasons why arts education is a valuable tool with young children: (1) arts can be
used across subjects and context (interdisciplinary), (2) it touches on the needs of different learners
(multiple intelligence), (3) flexibility that allows creativity in the classroom, and (4) shifts away
from traditional methods of rote learning. First, educators need to have a paradigm shift in the idea
that arts education is the responsibility of only the art teacher. Fowler (1994) offers that strong
schools tend to have strong arts program. Fowler (1994) states,
When used well, the arts are the cement that brings all the disparate curricular areas together. In the
best schools, this is often the case. The arts are valued for their interdisciplinary potential. The result

I believe that Art is very important to any society. I think that Art in whatever form portrays real
daily lives of the people, or person performing it. Art shows us that what people are thinking and

important men of Egypt have their bodies carved out in stone. When the man dies they believed that
the spirit lived there, this is called the Ka the part of the human spirit that lives on after death. The
tension and conflict between the uncontrollable forces of nature and the civilizing powers of
human society have dominated American art and theatre. The actual enjoyment of art comes
from the experience of viewing it or experiencing it. This enjoyment should be spontaneous and
felt in the moment. Art is very diverse; it can deal with sorrow ,joy both or neither , it can present

Art and Aesthetics Art is usually referred to as the visual arts, where a piece of work is judged
through the aesthetics in which it creates. However, art refers to all human endeavors, including

Everybody, one time or the other, will fell as though they have been let down and disappointed by
others, including the ones they love. Those feelings would include loneliness, and the yearn for
support and guidance. At many times, we get the support we need, but once in a while; we would
be left alone in the world, having to fend off our miseries by ourselves. That is exactly what I had
in mind when I was creating my piece of art. I wanted the girl to depict a helpless teenager, who is
yearning for support because the world has shunned her away completely. This in fact, removes
all the color and vibrancy in her life, leaving her world looking black and white. The reason why
the girl in my drawing is looking down is due to disbelief. She is utterly shocked by how the
people that she thought that she could count on have left her to fend for herself. She saw the dark

MFAH CULTURAL RESPONSE ESSAY
The art museum is truly a work of art in itself. I enjoy trips to places of culture, be it a play,
musical, opera, art gallery or, in this case, a museum. When I walk in, I feel inspired to draw,
paint, and sculpt. For just a little while, I get to focus on art and experience a sense of detachment
from the everyday hustle and bustle of the world. Time truly seems to slow down when you're at
the museum. Upon entering the museum, I felt refreshed and frankly, smarter. For my Cultural
Response Essay, I visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. I visited the museum briefly last
semester to view specific works, but this was the first time that my family and I took our time,
really feeling the art and traverse all of the rooms. The last time we went to the museum, we missed

protected in canopic jars for the afterlife. The heart, on the other hand, was kept intact with the
body. This was necessary in order for the deceased to prove goodness in the afterlife. The pictures
on the delicate wrappings are extremely significant as everything represents something in Egyptian

representing Anubis, god of embalming. The color green signifies renewal and rebirth which
