Morris Gleitzman's Boy Overboard shows the vitality of desire, sending Jamal and Bibi to Australia
and out of Afghanistan, and concern driving them to survival, and how crucial it is to have both.
Hope is the thing that leads us in the right direction, like the light at the end of a tunnel. Being put
through difficult situations, like going to a refugee camp and leaving on a boat with nowhere near
enough supplies, is difficult, but hope is what then lets people like Jamal and Bibi to survive.
Getting to Australia after long, hard boat trip across the pacific ocean, hope is what gets them their,
and thinking that everything can produce hope, even when the situation seems hopeless. Jamal
showed this when his house was blown up, and had to stay with Yusuf and his grandfather, when
he says "If I get really good at soccer, do you think the government will forgive Mum and
Dad?"(p41) Morris Gleitzman showed his sympathy for refugees, as shown by giving them all some

Fear is what drives people to live, especially in the worst possible situation. Fearing what could

The book The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis was written about the Afghanistan War. This was a
time of much change. Women were not permitted to leave their homes without a man and if they
didn't follow these rules they would be beaten in public. Also, many families lost family members

Personification is when you give an object or animal human traits. Barbara Hurd uses lots of
personification in her article. Barbara explains, " Foaming and inching its lunar way up the

Rantz faces depressing and unfortunate events. When he was young, his mother dies, and his father
remarries a harsh woman, Thula, who treats Joe dreadfully. His father can't hold a job, and his
family keeps moving from town to town, which negatively impacts his social life. Eventually, Thula
threatens to end the marriage with Joe's father unless Joe leaves the family. Joe's father accepts
Thula's request, and he abandons Joes when he is only fifteen years old. Yet in the midst of living

Intro: The book boy overboard written by Morris Gleitzman delineate an Afghanistan family going in
an horrendous trip to Australia hoping for a better future. The Talibans in Afghanistan have set some
harsh and very cruel rules, Jamal's family can't obey those rules and broke them and as punishment
the Talibans is planning to execute them. Jamal and his family are shocked about this incident, they
decided to leave their friends and beloved village and move to a different country to prevent
