Types of Players vs. Types of Appeals

                    explorers

player types achievers
                    socializers
                    killers

the greatest reason writer sees for
thinking in terms of
"game appeals" is that it's a lot
easier to contemplate how to blend
different appeals than different
personalities
Five Categories of Appeals

Accomplishment Imagination Socialization Recreation Subversion

- The rewarding feelings that come from
"winning" or otherwise succeeding at a game.

- Related appeals include
completion (finishing a game, getting all the trophies/achievements/unlockable content)
perfection (improving one's skills at the game)
      domination (besting other players)
Fortune (earning a reward through chance),
construction(using a game to create art or objects).
Five Categories of Appeals

Accomplishment Imagination Socialization Recreation Subversion

-Practices of pretend, with particular regard to
   storytelling and simulation.

  -Related appeals include
         spectatorship ("watching" stories)
         directorship ("making" stories)
roleplaying (pretending to take on another kind of identity)
exploration (pretending to exist within a pretend landscape)
Five Categories of Appeals

Accomplishment Imagination Socialization Recreation Subversion

- the various ways that players use games to connect with
one another on an interpersonal level.

- Related appeals include
conversation (through game chat during play, or made possible through in-game messaging),
cooperation (supporting and helping one another during play)
generosity (helpful behavior in a more one-way direction,
like giving gifts or helping a low-level player advance more quickly).
Five Categories of Appeals

Accomplishment Imagination Socialization Recreation & Subversion

Recreation Subversion
- processes of renewal and - behaviors that run counter to norms
pastime, which typically and expectations, as defined by
means using a game to adjust society and game logic alike.
one's psychological or - Related appeals include
  psychological state. provocation
(actively antagonizing other players through "inappropriate" behavior)

- Related appeals include disruption
mood-management (breaking game logic and exploiting glitches)
(toward relaxation, elation, amusement, or other emotions) transgression
distraction ("playing evil", such as killing friendly NPCs).
(actively avoiding thinking of painful or difficult stimuli)
                contemplation
(pondering thought-provoking issues),
                exertion
(getting physically energized through play).
Thank you
