1. Ok Scholars! Time to
read, analyze, and engage
accountably in academic
conversation.
2. But first!
The best accountable talks happen
when:
-All members are included! ( All voices
are heard…)
-You practice SLANT
-You stay on topic, redirect the
conversation
-You discuss a controversial issue!
3. As you learn about the
topics, please FOLLOW
ALL DIRECTIONS:
If asked to take
notes/write, write in your
spiral please.
4. Let’s talk about Jihad.
What is it?
Jihad literally means “ to strive” or to struggle to overcome
an issue/problem in life. When you practice Jihad, you are
trying to overcome a difficulty.
Since you know the literal meaning of Jihad, it can be done in
three ways:
By the tongue (Speaking) , by the pen, and by the sword
5. 1- (In your group, create a definition of
the term Jihad in your own words based
on learning from previous slides.)
6. Read:
Muhammad said there are 2 types of
Jihad:
Lesser Jihad: One of the forms of this Jihad is to take up arms in defense
of Islam or a Muslim country when Islam is attacked. This kind of Jihad has to
be declared by the religious leadership or by a Muslim head of state who is
following the Quran and Sunnah. (It is a physical fight!)
Greater Jihad : This type of Jihad occurs within a person’s heart and mind.
It is a challenge to think before speaking, work hard to achieve a goal, treat
others respectfully.
7. 2) Discuss and Answer with your
group:
Why do you think the GREATER JIHAD (or
biggest struggle) is an internal one, inside
of a person?
8. IMPORANT INFORMATION: (Read)
*Protecting yourself and religious beliefs is
part of Jihad. The Qur’an forbids Muslims to
force non-Muslims to convert.
*The Qur’an also allows for war. It has rules
for fighting. These include:
-Not destroying the bodies of dead
victims, harming women, children, or
elderly.
-Soldiers cannot destroy property, crops
of houses of worship
9. 3) Discuss and answer (in spiral!) the following question
with your group.
Questions:
Are the Qur’an’s guidelines for war being
followed in our world? Is Jihad being
peacefully practiced?
10. Discuss opinions and answer the
following question in your spiral.
4) How has the media (TV, news,
magazines)shaped our country’s view of
Islam and Jihad?
11. 5) Video: Within your group, discuss
the purpose of the video. What did the
creators hope to teach us? (List
ideas…)
