2. Introduction to Plastic Waste
One of the most alarming
environmental hazard…
• We are pouring around 400 millions of
tonnes plastic every year in the environment.
• Around 90% of the plastic generated in the
world is not getting recycled
• Globally to date, around 8.3 billion tons of
plastic waste has been generated and it will
take around next 400 years to start
decomposing.
2
Impacts of plastic waste on environment…
• Plastic debris, laced with chemicals and often
ingested by marine animals, can injure or poison
wildlife.
• Floating plastic waste, which can survive for
thousands of years in water, serves as mini
transportation devices for invasive species,
disrupting habitats
• Plastic buried deep in landfills can leach harmful
chemicals that spread into groundwater
decomposing.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch…
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a gyre of plastic debris in the
north-central Pacific Ocean. It’s the largest accumulation of plastic
in the world. You can see the size of it in adjacent image. It
Expands over 1.6 million square kilometers.
Petrifying Fact…
The first plastic toothbrush used by a human being in 1938
is still somewhere lying on this earth
3. ◍Approximately 1-billion plastic
toothbrushes are thrown out each
year in the United States alone -
about 3 brushes per person.
◍That is enough to stretch around
the Earth 4 times.
◍Totaling about 50-million pounds
of plastic waste being added to the
landfills each year.
◍It takes approximately 500 years
for one toothbrush to decompose,
by the time a single toothbrush
decays there will be more than 500
billion to take its place.
Environmental impact of plastic toothbrush
3
◍ On average, a plastic
toothbrush weighs around 20 g
and so it can be calculated that
the whole of humanity produces
600 million kg of plastic
toothbrush waste in only 365
days.
◍ Of course, this number is a
worst-case scenario estimate
and is not conclusive, since
many people have switched to
electric toothbrushes (which
produce significantly less
waste) or to zero-waste
toothbrushes.
4. Environmental impact of plastic toothbrush
4
◍There are also negative repercussions from the manufacturing and distribution
process that are equally as great.
◍ The production of the nylon bristles on each toothbrush causes nitrous oxide to
be produced and released into the atmosphere as a bi-product;
◍Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas that is 310 times more potent than carbon
dioxide.
◍Plastic toothbrush made from polypropylene plastic and nylon, which come
from fossil fuels.
◍Like so much other plastic that’s thrown away, toothbrushes often end up in
waterways and oceans.
◍Bamboo toothbrush handles can take around six months to compost, while a
plastic one takes hundreds of years to fully break down.
5. Why Bamboo?
Bamboo is considered the wise man timber. Bamboo is the planet’s largest grass. Native species can be found
on all continents, (except Antarctica), from the coastal South Pacific islands to the Himalayan mountains.
RENEWABILITY
STRENGTH
SUSTAINABILITY
LONG LIFE
Bamboo is Strong, with
the Compressive Force
of concrete and the
strength-to-weight ratio
of Steel.
With very little attention,
A Bamboo Shoot can
become a Structural
Column within three
years ,and that Building
could stand Strong for a
Lifetime.
With its 3-year Growth Cycle
and Carbon Sequestration, It
is a Uniquely Efficient and
Responsible resource. Even
Sustainable Timber can’t
begin to compare with
Bamboo as conscientious
Building material.
A Bamboo grove can
last for a hundred year
or more. An average
cane may live up to 15
years depending on the
species.

7. SURVEY TO UNDERSTAND PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL
BEHAVIOR IN THE YOUTH
A survey has been conducted to understand the willingness to adopt environment-friendly toothbrush. The findings are
based on the 36 responses received with the ages of participants between 21 and 40.
Link to the questionnaire: https://forms.gle/LRyEn2AMz2QztGre6
97.2% of the
respondents are
currently using a plastic
toothbrush, while 1
respondent doesnot use
a plastic toothbrush
Maximum respondents
(58.3%) replace their
toothbrush in 3-12
months, while 38.9%
respondents replace it in
every 0-3 months
Yes
No
Awareness of the
hazards that plastic
toothbrushes pose to the
environment among
respondents.
Maximum respondents are
willing to switch from plastic
toothbrushes, with no
respondent not willing at all
Sentiment of the respondents
towards the price for an alternate
environment-friendly toothbrush
8. SURVEY TO UNDERSTAND PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL
BEHAVIOR IN THE YOUTH
Potential challenges perceived
in adopting environment-
friendly toothbrush
Willingness of the
respondents to switch to
bamboo-handle toothbrush,
after knowing the benefits
of bamboo. Pro-
environmental behavior is
seen here.
Willingness of the
respondents to recommend
using a Bamboo or any other
environment-friendly
toothbrush to acquaintances
and family members
Awareness among the respondents
about any start-up or firm working on
producing bamboo products to
replace plastic ones. Awareness
could be seen in almost half the
respondents which is a step towards
pro-environmental behavior
