The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed primarily to conduct infrared astronomy. As the largest optical telescope in space, its greatly improved infrared resolution and sensitivity allow it to view objects too early, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This is expected to enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observation of the first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets. Goals: The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared observatory that will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity. Launch Date: Dec. 25, 2021 | 12:20 UTC Science Targets: Our Solar System | Beyond Our Solar System Type :Orbiter Agency: NASA Webb will study every phase in the history of our universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the big bang, to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own solar system. It will build on the Hubble Space Telescope's discoveries JWST's primary mirror is a 6.5 m (21 ft.)-diameter gold-coated beryllium reflector with a collecting area of 25.4 m2 (273 sq. ft.). If it were built as a single large mirror, this would have been too large for existing launch vehicles. The mirror is therefore composed of 18 hexagonal segments which unfolded after the telescope was launched JWST operates in a halo orbit, circling around a point in space known as the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrange point, approximately 1,500,000 km beyond Earth's orbit around the Sun. L2 is short-hand for the second Lagrange Point, a wonderful accident of gravity and orbital mechanics, and the perfect place to park the Webb telescope in space. There are five so-called "Lagrange Points" - areas where gravity from the sun and Earth balance the orbital motion of a satellite

Art Project 2 Instructions To get started: While keeping this Instructions page open, go ahead and open up a second browser window or tab, for the "Art Project 2 Lab Journal" quiz/form. You will be collecting information about a known extrasolar planet and its host star in "Phase 1" that needs to be recorded near the top of that form. Further down, you will fill in some more details and answer a few questions as you complete that and "Phase 2," and then answer some more questions based on your experience in "Phase 3." Unlike in Art Project 1, where the different project phases had different due dates, here you can do the whole thing all at once. Having the "Lab Journal" quiz/form already open as you read and work down through these Instructions should help smooth out the process overall. Let us get started with... —————————————————————————————————— —— Phase 1 — Find a Planet! For this portion of the project we will use the "NASA's Eyes" app — available either online to run in your web browser, or as a free downloadable stand-alone program, at the following links:  in-browser version: https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/eyes-on-exoplanets/ (链接到外部网站。)  stand-alone app: https://eyes.nasa.gov/ (链接到外部网站。) The two versions present the same general information, although the formatting is slightly different. The performance (speed / smoothness) and visual quality is generally better in the stand-alone program, although the web-based version has the advantage of not needing to deal with downloading and installing a new piece of software on your computer. You may use either for this project. If you decide to get the stand-alone app version, note that it has several "modes" — all of which are cool, of course — but for this project we will specifically be using the "Eyes on Exoplanets" one (open the app, and choose "Eyes on Exoplanets," on the far right side of the main menu screen; there may be a little pop-up that asks whether to use the app in full-screen mode or not, and it does not matter which you choose). A short introductory sequence will play, showing an overview of the data set of stars in the Sun's neighborhood, and which of those have been identified as having planets. After the introduction plays through, you can click-and-drag to move the view around, and look around at the stars that have had planets detected around them (the stars with 8-pointed star icons, instead of just tiny dots). You can scroll up or down to zoom in and out (or use the slider on the far right side of the window in the stand-alone app). Depending on how closely zoomed in on the Sun, or how far outward you are looking from, you may notice a couple of distinct "ray-shaped" or clustered regions of the galaxy in which a large number of planets have been detected around stars in those directions. These are data sets from specific dedicated planet-detection surveys — including, especially, the Kepler mission you learned about in Unit 3 of the astronomy video game ...

There is a bit more to it than “spiral”. Look for information on morphological classification in text books and/or online. Find out the shape of the Milky Way galaxy. [Type answer here] 2. Identify the parts the Milky Way. Some possible parts of a galaxy are: bulge, disk, halo, bar, or arm. Knowing the type of galaxy the Milky Way is, you should be able to identify the types of features the Milky Way has. Create a physical model of the Milky Way and identify the features it has. (A globe is an example of a physical model of Earth.) Describe your model and label all possible parts. [Type answer here] 3. Use your planetarium software to observe the Milky Way from the northern and southern hemispheres. Based on your observations (without the aid of telescopes or other wavelengths of light outside the visible range) explain how these observations support the conclusion that we live in a galaxy with the shape of your model. Further, determine in what part of the galaxy the Sun must be located to see the Milky Way as we do. [Type answers here] Part II: Mapping the Milky Way with Globular Clusters Galaxies like the Milky Way have objects, called “globular clusters” that exist in the outer regions of the galaxy (or halo). Globular clusters are dense clusters of stars that are generally free of gas and dust. In galaxies like the Milky Way, the gas and dust are located primarily in the disk. If we want to look for objects that we can see clearly (with no interference from gas and dust) we must observe objects in the halo. In the late 19th century an astronomer named Harlow Shapley devised an experiment to determine the position of Earth in the universe using globular clusters. He chose these objects because of their apparent lack of interaction with the gas and dust in the Milky Way. Step 4.Explain how Shapley’s experiment could be used to determine the position of Earth within the Milky Way. Given what you already know about the part of the galaxy in which the Sun is located and the information about globular clusters, what information would Shapley need to figure out the position of Earth? For about how many globular clusters do you think he would need to get this information to determine the position of Earth? Describe the experiment and list the steps one would need to take. [Type answers here] Step 5. As a group, devise a method for determining the position of Earth within the Milky Way using globular clusters. Decide how many globular clusters you want to observe. Decide what information you need to do the analysis. There may be many different ways of analyzing the data, there does not need to be group consensus for the analysis, but each method that is used should be discussed with the group.
