What Role Has Human Activity Played in Causing Climate...
The change in global climate is the most powerful problem that currently occurs on the earth. The problems of climate change may be caused by both
of human activities and natural events. Climate change is the changes that affect the world's weather, including shifts in temperature, ocean level, land,
and precipitation. The climate change phenomenon can affect everything in the world not only natural environment, but also human society, and the
world economy. This essay aims to evaluate the role of human actions that have caused the climate change. The first part of this essay will talk about
the possible causes of climate change, and the second part will discuss the role of human activity, which is cause the climate change.

Maslin (2007) points out that Global Warming is caused by the massive increase in greenhouse gases, especially, carbon dioxide that were emitted to
the atmosphere. Additionally, human activities are also causing the climate change and greenhouse gases level. Examples of such human activities are
burning of coal, exhaust gas emission, deforestation and other agricultural and industrial practices. These activities are altering the atmospheric balance
and contributing to climate change (United Nation Environment Programme, 2006). To produce energy by burned coal, oil, and natural gas are
produced carbon dioxide, which can affect atmosphere at the same time. People used that energy for transportation, manufacturing, electricity
production, and other applications. People in almost every country usually took advantage by using landscape for agriculture, farming, and logging. For
example of deforestation in Thailand, when farmers need to plant crops, they choose to burn the old plant instead of dig them out, so it can lead to
carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, industrial practices are actions of human, which interest only profitable, and amenity but they did not care about
consequence in the future.
In conclusion, the climate change events such as the greenhouse effect and global warming are caused by both of changing in natural

Global Strategic Resource Allocation : Dengue
Global Strategic Resource Allocation: Dengue in India Health issues and their resolutions vary from one country to another. Various resources
across the world attempt to resolve or prevent an outbreak from occurring (Lahey, 2012). The purpose of this discussion is to identify a health issue
in another country and identify various factors, health policies, resources and progress to combat the health issue. Health Issue Dengue is a virus
spread by infected mosquitoes to almost 400 million people annually would wide (Center of Disease Control, 2016). Dengue is more prominent is
tropical and subtropical countries with South East Asia having the greatest incidents (Kularatne, 2015). In 2015, India had 99,913 confirmed cases of
dengue with 220 cases resulting in deaths (National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, 2016). Dengue infections have tripled in India since
2010. Socioeconomic Factors There are several influences impacting the spread of the dengue virus. First, India has the worst sewage system in the
world (Kuronuma, 2015). According to The Times of India (2013), 80 percent of India's untreated sewage drains into rivers, lakes, and ponds. Next, in
order to have clean drinking water, residents use uncovered pots, containers, and bowls to collect rain water (Biswas, Bhunia, and Basu, 2014). The
collection containers are optimal places for mosquitoes to lay their larvae. Additionally, the local government is promoting economic growth by
allowing companies from other

Human Development Index to Measure Living Standards Within...
INTRODUCTION
Through the ages, economists worldwide have developed different measurements, statistics and standards in order to have an anchor number on how to
rate whether they be the development, their perceived inequality among other variables within a country. Because of this, and on the endeavour to
unify the measurement of the current situation of a country, the United Nations via the 'United Nations Development Program' in 1990 developed and
first published their 'Annual Human Development Report' featuring for the very first time in history the 'Human Development Index' (Stanton, 2007).
According to the United Nations (UN), Human Development is the process by which society can improve the living conditions of its citizens through ...

Naturally the UN has addressed these claims and has improved the index within the years, but there is always space for improvement.
The HDI had withstood several critics regarding the poor quality of the data used in the calculations, regarding the selection of indicators and even on
the calculations and the formulation itself; nevertheless, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) rebutted some of those claims and used
others to improve the HDI calculations. (Stanton, 2007). The HDI, with or without flaws, has up to some extent shaped the way we assess and
compare countries. Thanks to the HDI, the development is implied when talking about wellbeing instead of only looking at raw numerical information.
Hopefully in the future, the Index shall be improved even more, to finally have a definitive Index on development worldwide.
In the year 2000, the UN established eight 'international development goals' regarding: poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal
health, HIV and other diseases, environmental sustainability and global partnership. (Nations, n.d.). For this paper, the HIV pandemic shall be
analysed. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that serves as root for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome orAIDS which is a
disease that compromises the human immune system supressing it and leaving the body open for other diseases and

Global Warming : The United Nations Environment Programme
As humanity is already aware, global warming is a life–threatening issue to each and every perishable being on Earth. The climate is changing. The
earth is increasing in temperature, and now, there is overwhelming scientific affirmation stating that it is occurring, and human induced. Global
warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as other air pollutants, come together within the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation
that have bounced off the earth's surface. Traditionally, the radiation would dissipate into space; however, these pollutants, which can last for centuries
within the atmosphere, ambuscade the heat and cause the planet to become even warmer in temperature. It is necessary for humanity to care about this
particular issue because if the issue is neglected, all living specimens will cease to exist. Scientists began to raise concerns about climate change in the
early 1980s. In 1988, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as well as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), initiated the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in order to assess the scientific research attaining to climate change. Its first significant report was
recorded in the year 1990, displaying that there was broad international consensus that human beings induced climate change. This particular report led
way to an international convention for climate change, otherwise known as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The Un Security Council Is The Primary Subsidy For...
Since its establishment, the United Nations has played a vital role in total global development. As stated by the UN, their roles and responsibilities
consist of maintaining international peace and security through the prevention of conflict and coming up with solutions if ever in conflicting scenarios
through peacekeeping efforts. Their UN Security Council is the primary subsidy for international peace and security; promoting sustainable
development by working to bridge social, economic, or cultural disparities, and "promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for
fundamental freedoms for all" (What we do, United Nations); protecting human rights and making such a key aspect and value of the Organization;
upholding international law through the usage of courts, multilateral treaties, and tribunals to ensure that international law is being upheld; and to
deliver humanitarian aid, which is one of the main principles the UN was founded on: "to achieve international co–operation in solving international
problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character" (What we do, United Nations).
Let's give a scenario that outlines the role of the United Nations for clarification. If say tension with importers and exporters of The Gambia and
Senegal would arise, which it has, given the river that divides the country–it would be in the role of the United Nations to sit representatives of both
nations down and to establish an agreement so both parties leave

Globalization Of Cambodia
In the agricultural side of their economy, the rice sector, while still significant to the overall economy has found that " its share of GDP has fallen
sharply from about 55 per cent in the early 1990s to one–third currently"(Hill & Menon, 2014). Furthermore, cambodia uses a lot of political affairs to
sustain the economy. Cambodia is one of the most highly open economy in the "Asia,Pacific region" but with limitation " on trade and capital flows"
(Hill & Menon, 2014).
B. Population characteristics According to 2017 population data, Cambodia is home to 16,083,822 people ("Cambodia population," n.d.). The

Even still, we see that Cambodia is ranked 143/188 for human development, which shows that there is still work to be done when it comes to their
overall human development. Cambodia has a significant amount of land (176,515 sq km) but also maintains a large population so development when
it comes to land is unlikely, unless the government was able to acquire land from nearby territories. With Prime MinisterHun Sen having been in
power since 1998 and there being a significant amount of political unrest prior to that, it appears as if there is a need for further governmental
development to better relate to the people who live in Cambodia.
The Human Development Index for Cambodia shares data about gender inequality within the country, emphasizing the need for human development
within this country. For the Gender Inequality Index, Cambodia is ranked 112 out of 159 countries for gender inequality ("Cambodia," n.d.). What has
become apparent from the data presented on the standard of living within Cambodia, is that there needs to be a greater emphasis on human
development and decreasing inequality within the country. If citizens are living happier and more healthy lives, the implications for the economic and

Global Tourism Industry Is A Vital Component Of The Global...
Despite wars, political turmoil, natural disasters, terrorist threats, and economic and energy crises in various areas of the globe, the tourism industry
surges and has become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, in 2014 over 1
billion tourist traveled to other nations (World Tourism Organization, 2015). The tourism industry is a vital component of the global economy. It helps
to promote peace & stability in the developing world by providing jobs for the locals, generate revenue/income, and promote cultural awareness. Put
together, tourism generated nearly seven trillion dollars in 2014 worldwide (Statista, 2014). As the years' progress, so too will the number of tourists.
With such a vast economical sector– which receives a fairly large annual income, there are often many issues associated with the industry that need to
be addressed and resolved. First and foremost, global tourism puts an immense pressure on the water supplies. Fresh water is perhaps the most
important natural resource across the globe. The tourism industry generally overuses fresh water for hotels, swimming pools, golf courses and
personal use by staff and tourists. This can result in water shortages and degradation of water supplies (United Nations Environmental Programme,
2015). In dryer regions around the world, such as the Mediterranean, the water scarcity is a particular concern. Since the climate of the Mediterranean

land pollution, which can effect individual's repository system and other illnesses. By having this law in place landfills are not filled up with so
much plastic bag rubbish and as a result can be helping improve human health. More reusable bags. As the result of the 5p bag charge it has helped

Overconsumption or Overpopulation: Which Is the Bigger of...
Global and Regional Sustainability Over–population or Overconsumption: Which is the bigger of two vices to the progress of sustainability today? In
the age, where the collective value of goods and commodities, the strength of economic markets and the accumulated wealth of individuals dictate the
ease of life and the standards of living within society; it is imperative that we as a species reiterate to ourselves that the natural resources that enable
us to fulfil all our basic needs, fashion all our desirable wants; and provisions the framework on which we build our cities, economies and daily lives

Comparatively, over–consumption refers to the anthropocentric notion and practice of "ownership" as well as indiscriminate use of natural resources
and the environment for personal benefit and gain; without due regard and concern for the availability of such basic resources and natural services to
remain viable in the future as well as for others who may have less access to them (Butler, 1994; Goodland & Daly, 1998). Over–consumption can
be seen to be directly entrenched within the umbrellas of economic and personal wealth as the means to securing the availability of necessacities and
resources (Fine et. Al, 1996). Brown & Cameron (2000) and Princen (1999) concur that the human–centred notion of priority through
purchasability fosters the continued practice of unfair and unsustainable practices; whilst concurrently promoting wastage and disconnectedness
between societies and the natural environment. The accelerated rate of natural resources utilised globally, noted against only the slightest marginal
increase in economic development witnessed within the developing and underdeveloped regions; suggests that the majority of these key resources are
being exploited for the further economic benefit of the developed regions by sheer means of their ability to purchase them from these less developed
regions, thus limiting the availability of these resources for

Essay On Gender Equality
Gender equality is a global health topic that affects many developed and underdeveloped countries in all parts of the world. It is such a reoccurring
theme amidst nations worldwide, the United Nations, or UN, developed a list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, pertaining to and including issues
like gender equality, to advocate the elimination of these dilemmas. The goal of the UN, regarding gender equality, is to "achieve gender equality and
empower all women and girls" (United Nations Development Programme, 2017, para. 1). According to the Cambridge Dictionary, gender equality is
defined as "the act of treating women and men equally" (Cambridge Dictionary, 2017). However, this has not been clearly represented throughout
majority of human existence. The rivalry between men and women regarding superiority has been an ongoing ordeal globally. There have been
numerous occurrences where both genders had the disadvantage of not being accounted for substantially. Typically, when gender equality is
mentioned, people tend to think of the Suffragettes and feminist activists from the Women's Rights Movement like, Eleanor Roosevelt and Gloria
Steinem. Arguably, females are not the only ones fighting for their rights, especially when it comes to the nursing profession. Worldwide, there is a
precedent stereotype that the nurturing and difficult work done by a nurse is a job for a woman. Nursing is considered "feminine" and in certain
cultures, it is frowned upon to be a male nurse

The Nile River-Egypt
The Nile River is arguably one of the most important water sources in the world and has an extremely rich history dating back thousands of years.
Without the Nile, the ancient Egyptian civilization would have never existed. Egypt is basically a whole lot of sand and not much else, except they
have the Nile River flowing through it, on it's way to the Mediterranean sea. The ancient Egyptians lived along the Nile River and it provided them
with abundant water, food (fish) and the opportunity to develop agriculture along it's banks. The Nile River was also used for transportation and trade
with other regions because land travel was more difficult than floating on the river. The Ancient Egyptians were at the mercy of the seasonal flooding

Because they grew only one crop per year, the nutrients were not depleted quickly and of course, each flood washed new fertile sediment onto the

Damming of the Nile
Life on the river was pretty much the same for thousands of years, until 1889 when the first Aswan Dam was built in an attempt to control the yearly
floods. It proved to be insufficient and was raised two more times until it was decided to build another dam upstream in 1946. Once these dams were
functional they provided many benefits to the rapidly growing population, including easier access to drinking water, irrigation for agriculture,
electricity for modern life and fishing (Burke and Eaton) . Certainly the benefits to Egyptians were numerable and undeniable. The does not mean there
were no negative impacts. The yearly floods no longer came and all that good, nutrient–rich silt that used to wash down the Nile and onto the flood
plans was now blocked by the dams. "Before the Aswan High Dam, the Nile River carried about 124 million tons of sediment to the sea each year,
depositing nearly 10 million tons on the floodplain and delta. Today, 98% of that sediment remains behind the dam. The result has been a drop in soil
productivity and depth, among other serious changes to Egypt's floodplain agriculture. The Aswan Dam has also led

Critically Evaluate The Link Between Good Governance And...
Critically evaluate the connection between good governance and peace.
I)Introduction
The question of what constitutes a "good government" has been a subject written about since the earliest known time. In fact, in the western tradition,
Plato wrote extensively on the question, most notably in The Republic (Blackburn and Vance, 2007). He (in the voice of Socrates) asked if the purpose
of government was to help one 's friends and hurt one 's enemies, for example. Aristotle, Plato 's student picked up the subject in his treatise on
Politics. Many centuries later, John Locke addressed the question of abuse of power by writing on the importance of checks and balances to prevent
or at least constrain the abuse of power (Powell, 1996).

Finally, the third section
A final section discusses how the weaknesses of the good governance concept pose problems for one of the most central claims in the policy literature,
that good governance promotes economic development.
II)Definitions and Historical Link Between Good Governance and Peace
The term "good governance" is perceived, in general as a normative principle of administrative law, which obliges the State to perform its functions in a
manner that promotes the values of efficiency, non–corruptibility, and responsiveness to civil society (Rosenau, 1997). It is therefore a principle that is
largely associated with statecraft. While the government is not obliged to substantively deliver any public goods, it must ensure that the processes
for the identification and delivery of such goods are concrete in terms of being responsive to public demands, and respect for the principles of
fairness, justice, and equality, as well as the implementation of policies that are effective and efficient, in order to promote "the deeper human
requisites of the citizenry" (Henry, 2010, p. 3).The principles of good governance have also been espoused in the context of the internal operations of
private sector organizations (Rae and Wong, 2004, p. 135; see also, Paris, R., 2004, p.

Water the Future
Water is vital for human survival, essential for the necessities of all life on earth; human health and functioning, the natural environment, vegetation,
insects, livestock, and a requirement for future generations. With the population growing at alarming rates accompanied with resource depletion an
accepted part of society; we are using and exceeding all natural resources we have left. Until we realize there is a vast shortage; by then it will be far
too late.
Scientists and researchers have stated that fresh water resources are running low worldwide, and are only expected to worsen over time as the
population increases (Pearce, 2007), (Browns, Amazon books). Given the current trends of resource depletion and population increase, as much as two
thirds of the world population in 2025 may be subject to moderate–to–high water stress, where only a small fraction of available renewable fresh water,
less than 0.01 percent, is readily obtainable for the direct human use (United Nations, 1997a). Putting this in a simple explanation, no more of this
available renewable fresh water (0.01 percent of all water) is available today than existed at the start of human civilization. So therefore as population

Internal And Domestic Conflict During The Cold War Era
The words of Lewis carrol– Let craft, ambition, spite Be quenched in reason's night, Till weakness turn to might, Till what is dark is light, Till what is
wrong is right. The conventional political analysts gave two fold international relationship doctrine–war and peace. Pace has meant international peace,
while war has referred to major interstate armed conflicts. The security within borders has been identical to national security. National security and
national defense have become virtually synonymous, and emphasis has been put on the military aspects of security. The traditional arrangements for
peace and security have been balance of power and collective security. However, the post–cold war era has brought to the fore the problem of internal
and domestic conflict. Globalisation and communication are deeply intertwined in international relations. Probably, there is no globalization without
media and communication. The breaking up of space and time, brought about by electronic media, has led to individuals being able to interact with one
another and within frameworks of mediated interaction, regardless of social disparities. The countries are no more impermeable to the events and
happenings of other nations around the world. David Held and Anthony Mc grew's definition of globalization which "denotes the expanding scale,
growing magnitude, speeding up and deepening impact of transcontinental flows and patterns of social interaction."

education programmes was as a result of some limiting factors and proffers solutions to such.

Women play constructive, complimentary and fundamental roles in the society. The education of woman in the formal education exposes her to
available information that could aid them in responsible behaviour for effective and efficient motherhood. Education confers undoubted benefits on the
individuals and the society especially when it is appropriate to the goals and aspirations of the society.
Based on the above, Nyerere (1970) stated that education should be designed to meet the economic and developmental circumstances of a nation. It is
in realisation of the above that women need to participate in the socio–economic development of any nation which is in consonant with the United
Nations advocacy which led to pronouncement of a decade for women (1975–1985).
According to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3010: XXVII, the decade was aimed at addressing issues relating to the educational
advancement of women with the over riding goals being that of developing their potentials, contribute to and benefit from development (United

Developing A Unified Un Country Team
Executive Summary
This report focuses upon the operations of UNDAF and the assistance that it is providing to the countries in order to help them achieve national
development goals. UNDAF presents a great opportunity for the nations to come together and build a coherent association with the UN system to
address various issues pertaining to the field of development assistance. With this framework, different UN organizations can associate with the
government of the nations to nurture the effectiveness. "Deliver as one" focuses on the outcomes of the contribution through reforms in order to set up
a unified UN country team with one programme, one leader, one budget, one office framework. Though there are constraints related to the resource ...

In general, a UNDAF programme runs for around three years and has some underlying agenda along with periodic reviews (Jagel, 2012).
United Nation's "Delivering as one" vision in the area of development assistance has been a major strategic programme framework which intends to
work upon achieving national development priorities which is evident from observance of the progress and the outcomes of the contribution done so
far as well as going on track with the future targets under various objectives and criteria with respect to various countries.
According to United Nations Development Group (2010), further to authorizing its conduct and contribution, the General Assembly also encouraged
the UN development system to boost its collaboration with the various countries at different levels in order to bolster the national capabilities as well as
to support the national development priorities with the help of assessment of the common countries and the UNDAF.
In order to bring about development, the UN implemented the "deliver as one" at the country level in order to achieve the Millennium Development
goals and the other development goals. Its focus in on the outcomes of the contribution through reforms in order to set up a unified UN country team

Essay on Food Security in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Script for Geography
Good morning/afternoon
Today I will talk about food security in the Democratic Republic of Congo. DR Congo is an African country that consists of over 2,300,000 square
kilometres (Central Intelligence Agency (US), 2013). The population in DR Congo is around seventy–five and a half million people with an average
life expectancy of 56 years, a lot shorter than Australians (Central Intelligence Agency (US), 2013). The religion consists of Roman Catholic, Protestant
and Muslims plus some other smaller religions (Central Intelligence Agency (US), 2013). The capital city is called Kinshasa, with other large cities
called Lubumbashi, Mbuji–Mayi and Kananga (Central Intelligence Agency (US), 2013). The Democratic Republic of ... Show more content on

In DR Congo there are two main agriculture regions, Plains of the east and the south and the eastern highlands (The Washington Post Company, 2001).
In the plains coffee beans, potatoes and leeks are grown, while in the highlands tomatoes, sweet potatoes, yum and pumpkins are grow as the
temperatures are cool and there is more fertile soil (The Washington Post Company, 2001). DR Congo is ranked 107th (the worst) in the world (Global
Food Security Index, 2013). This ranking is produced by the lack of food affordability, food availability and more importantly the quality and safety
of the food (Global Food Security Index, 2013). Every country, whether it's DR Congo or America, have some strengths when it comes to food security.
For DR Congo their strengths are agricultural import tariffs (affordability), Volatility of agriculture production (availability), and nutritional standards
(quality and safety of food), just to name some (Global Food Security Index, 2013).
Some challenges that DR Congo face, in terms of food security, can be put in three sections as stated before (Global Food Security Index, 2013). In the
affordability section they have problems with access to financing for farmers, Food consumption and the proportion of the population that are under the
poverty line (Global Food Security Index, 2013). In the next section, availability of food, they have problems with corruption, agricultural infrastructure

Peru Human Development
Analyzing data Peru's Human Development Report from the United Nations Development Programme, one can learn a lot about a country.
Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary used to assess progress in three basic dimensions of human development; which consists of a
long and healthy life, knowledge and average standards of living. A long and healthy life is measured by life expectancy at birth, knowledge level
is measured by the years of education among the adult population. Overall Peru's HDI value for 2015 is 0.740 which is a high human development
category ranking 87 out of 188 countries and territories. Between 1990 and 2015 this index increased 20.7 percent due to the increase in life
expectancy at birth by 9.3 years, mean years of schooling increased by 2.4 years and expected years of schooling increased by 1.5 years. This is a
great improvement for a country and is expected to keep thriving in this category. In 2010 the Human Development Report (HDR) introduced the
Gender Inequality Index (GII) to reflect gender–based inequalities in three categories, such as reproductive health, empowerment, and economic
activity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Tourism : Positive And Negative Effects On The Economy
In recent times, with the improvement of people's living standards, the demand of traveling is increasingly rising. According to the UNWTO, the
number of tourists traveling oversea yearly is over one billion (World Tourism Organization, 2016). Not only has this massive figure made tourism
one of the key industries, it also makes up 10% of worldwide GDP and 6% of the total export turnover of the world (T. Rifai, 27 September 2015,
personal communication). Tourism is a "fertile ground" for all nations in the world, especially developing countries to boost their economic growth,
preserve their own proud culture and protect the environment. However, apart from these advantages, the disadvantages that it brings are undeniable.
Tourism has both positive and negative effects on the economy, environment and society.
First of all, it is important to understand that the development of tourism may bring diverse effects on the economy, both positives and negatives.
Tourism has made hospitality one of the biggest employers in the world (Job Monkey, 2016). It creates numerous job opportunities for people ranging
from low–salary entry–level to well–paid qualified employment positions and helps them increase their living standards (Glenn, 2001). According to
Best Hospitality Degrees (2016), the number of people working in the hotel industry in 2013 was over 14 million. However, many of these
placements are seasonal which means in low seasons, there is less work and people may be

Introduction
In the last century the population has increased by 6 billion and by 2050 is expected to reach 8 Billion, this coupled with global industrialisation has
placed huge stresses on the environment, affecting sustainability and causing buildups of organic and inorganic contaminants throughout the biosphere,
most notably in the rhizosphere (Ward & Singh, 2004). Phytoremediation coming from the Greek word phyto, meaning "plant" and the latin

About the United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War, committed to providing the means to
help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting human beings all over the world (Wikipedia). The organization is
committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living
standards and human rights (Wikipedia). 'Ensuring environmental sustainability', climate change being one of the major factors, is one of the
millennium development goals of the UN. The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, along with many organizations/agencies under the
UN, collaboratively work towards achieving this goal.

'How does the United Nations support the millennium development goal of promoting environmental sustainability by limiting climate change in South
and North America?' This investigation shall focus on the previously mentioned question as this a very interesting topic to further research on, also as I
believe that the UN has played an enormous role in promoting environmental sustainability in South and North America, and therefore would make a
good topic to further research on. This topic is worthy of studying as by knowing of what many before us have done to protect and sustain the
environment, we can look into aiding the environment to a

Similarities Between Kenya And The United States
The United Nations Development Program is a global development network tasked with the responsibility of advocating for change in various
countries. The body works to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities through sustainable development. Several dimensions including health,
education and income measure human development. Each of the three dimensions has their specific indicators. This exposition will compare the data
on two countries and explain why they rank in different categories. The two countries of interest are Kenya and the United States. The countries rank
differently on the various indicators. The paper will try to answer why this is so. Kenya is presently ranked at position 147 with a human development
index of 0.535. On the other hand, the United States ranks 5th with an average of 0.914. Kenya has its life expectancy at birth at 61.72 while that of
the United States is 78.94. The reason for the quite high figure is due to the improved health care facilities that the country possesses. There are enough
medicines and medical equipment to respond adequately to emergencies. Kenya does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a nutshell, the population in the United States is more educated than their Kenyan counterparts. There are numerous reasons that could explain the
above situation. The education system of the United States is more developed as there are good policies that govern the education sector. The access to
education is high because of the numerous numbers of schools that are in place. The teaching personnel is sufficient thus the low teacher to pupil ratio.
The same can barely be said about Kenya. This country has a limited number of schools compared to its population. Individuals find it harder to access
education primarily due to their scarcity. The transition rates are also quite low and the teaching staff inadequate resulting in a high teacher–pupil

Haiti 's Recovery After The Earthquake
Haiti's Recovery After The Earthquake Five years after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, Haiti is rebuilding gradually. Haiti, being one of the poorest
countries, was always in need of improvement but the 2010 earthquake added to their concerns. With over 300,000 lives lost, houses, school and
businesses destroyed and family and friends mourning, the country had no hope. Haiti started receiving help immediately all over the world after the
earthquake. Food, medication and tents were sent to the country. Money was also donated from organizations and individuals such as celebrities.
With all the tremendous help, Haiti is still recovering slowly. Because of destroyed and unsafe houses, people were forced to live in camps. All parks
and most streets had been covered with tents. Only three years ago the government started removing people out of the streets. The government
provided housing to some of the population and others received a compensation to start a life out of the streets; but still five years later tents are still
common in some areas. Michel Martelly, the president of Haiti, had created multiple primary schools for the unfortunate children. The president and
his team had also fixed some common roads, but other constructions are still being delayed for instance, Haiti's National Palace still has not been
rebuilt. In a poor country as Haiti, insurance is not common for everyone. The wealthiest are the ones with insurance for their houses and businesses.

Environmental Issues: The United States and Uruguay
There are seven continents in the world made up of many powerful nations, big and small. These nations all have one thing in common, they struggle
with the large consumption of our nonrenewable resources. Using these nonrenewable resources are harmful for the environment. Among these
powerful nations is the United States. The United States is one of the biggest consumers of our nonrenewable resources. In this paper, I will provide
an analysis of the United States' consumption of resources. I will also compare the United States to Uruguay, a small yet more effective country when
it comes to utilizing our renewable resources.
The United States is the largest consumer of nonrenewable resources in the world. In the United States the primary source of energy comes from 3
different resources. These resources are petroleum, natural gas and coal. The three of these resources make up over 90 percent of the energy
consumption of nonrenewable resources in the United States. These nonrenewable resources are considered fossil fuels that are not costly when it
comes to extracting them from the environment. Fossil fuels are a large contributor to the air pollution than any other resource.
Nonrenewable energy is energy that once used can not be replenished and used again. When burning fossil fuels this has proven to be bad for the
environment. The resource coal is

monitor the progress of this goal. Generally, these targets do this, however, they do not provide specifics for the ways in which they should be

In Canada, the government has measures to reduce threats of pollution from land–based activities and spills (Environment Canada, 2013). Globally,
there is UNEP's Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land–based Activities (GPA). At least 72 countries
have created programs of marine protection and pollution reduction since GPA was established (Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the
Marine Environment from Land–based Activities, 2014). It was difficult to find research to support whether target, 14.2 (sustainably manage marine
ecosystems by 2020) is being measured. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO works with several global
/intergovernmental programs of Ecosystem Health and Ocean Observation. The IOC assesses marine environment globally working with national
governments and collects data on marine environment to help inform decision makers (UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission,
2015). Target 14.3 addresses ocean acidification and minimization. In the United States (U.S.), the NOAA's PMEL Carbon program has been working

Impact Of Biodiversity On The Environment
Furthermore, it is a proven fact that biodiversity changes influence "the flow of ecosystem services", i.e. benefits that people receive from ecosystems,
including such services as provisioning, cultural, and regulating ones (Perrings 1). The most acute group of services in terms of biodiversity connection
with the environment concerns regulating services, which relate to control of biological variability, presence of pathogens and pests, emergence and
mitigation of environmental hazards, as well as many other essential environmental processes (Perrings 1). Hence, it is obvious that if biodiversity
significantly alters, the environment will be susceptible to a wide range of various impacts. Moreover, all of them will be of negative character.
Diminishing biodiversity, for instance, means that the process of climate regulation performed by ecosystems and their correlation will be threatened
and disrupted. As a result, it will intensify problems with the biodiversity and lead to further extinction of many species.
Nonetheless, researchers agree that it is difficult to predict exact impacts of biodiversity loss on the environment and the combined effect of the
biodiversity loss, degradation of the environment, and climate change. The latter three phenomena may intensify impacts of each other and lead to
more severe and abundant problems relating to each of them. Therefore, it becomes of utmost importance to address the existing problems today so
that the future of mankind

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Geriatric Care In Malaysia
Upgradation of geriatric care over 5 years in Malaysia
Introduction
What is geriatric care?
Geriatric care is derived from the Greek "geron" which means "old man" and "iatreia" which means "the treatment of disease".
According to UN– World Assembly on ageing in 1982, Vienna, in Malaysia, older persons are defined as those who are 60 years and above.Ageing
nation are defined as a nation where more than 10% of the population is aged more than 60 years old" and by 2020, Malaysia will be defined as an

Effects Of Chemistry On The Environment
There is no doubt that our knowledge of science and scientific procedures have changed over time. As new tools and technologies that appeared
during the 20th century, chemistry, physics, biology, and other sciences were able to grow and develop at a faster pace. These advances in science
have helped humanity by increasing living standards and have brought more widespread wellness to society. For instance, because of the existence of
chemistry, society has been provided with more advanced medicine, fabrics for clothes, plastics, rubber, componds of personal care products, parts of
cars, home appliances, computers and more. Society has benefited from chemistry; however, our environment is harmed by the consequences of
chemistry as well. "Many chemicals are used to improve the quality of our lives, and most are not harmful to the environment or human health.
However, some chemicals have the potential to cause harm..." (Government of Canada, 2011).
The consequence of these modern innovations is that the chemical industry has had extremely harmful consequences on the environment. The emissions
of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect, water pollution, the decrease of biodiversity and the impact on human health are consistent and growing
effects of the chemical industry and its activities. When chemicals are manufactured, consumed or thrown away, they are able to infiltrate not just the

Sixth Mass Extinction Paper
The sixth mass extinction is on the way and could be as massive as the extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs (Kolbert, 2014). Before learning
more about the sixth mass extinction, you'll have to first understand what biodiversity is and what will happen when you tamper with it. According
to Anup Shah, author of Why is Biodiversity Important? Who Cares, biodiversity means the variety of life on Earth or in an ecosystem. Every
species plays an important role in the ecosystem or in the world, no matter how big or small. A way to incorporate this into easier terms is the food
chain or food web. Without a certain species in the cycle, you'll be losing another species and so forth (Shah, 2014). Loss of biodiversity was declared

Altering the biodiversity could cause the loss of an environment such as the Malayan field rat incident in the Chiew Larn islands. Laurance, William
wrote the article, Islands of Extinction, which speaks of the Chiew Larn and how the reservoir was flooded. Larger animals perished due to the fact
of how small Chiew Larn islands were during the flood. Chiew Larn island measures from 1 hectare, 2.5 acres, to 60 hectares, 148 acres. Some
large animals such as tigers, deer, and elephants might have disappeared into the forest surrounds the reservoir. Because of this flood, it was easier
for the Malayan field rat to come and invade the Chiew Larn islands. One of William colleague, Tony Lynam, traveled and did an experiment on the
Chiew Larn islands after the flood. Tony's experiment was to use baited live traps to capture small mammals left on the island and ear tags them. The
result that Lynam had discovered was astounding because the native mammal species had vanished within 10 hectares of the area (Laurance, 2014).
The tragic change of the environment had lost the once healthy and plentiful biodiversity in the area. This is the start of an invader known as the
Malayan field rat. A Malayan field rat, an adaptable species, can be compared to the well and common known black rat. The Malayan field rat lives
near human settlements and agriculture. Luke Gibson, a Ph.D. student at the

World With The Advanced Technology
In a world with the advanced technology, groundbreaking medical procedures, fine dining, and luxury that this modern reality has to offer, it is often
difficult to understand the extreme poverty and suffering experienced by many people outside our borders. While it is widely agreed that something
should be done to help impoverished countries, how to go about that task is not entirely clear. The "'consensus' of the self–described development
community" (Easterly, 2013) in modern economic development advocates large scale central planning by "experts" for development to be applied to a
location. This approach often supports the leadership of "benevolent autocrats" to put these plans into action. William Easterly, on the other hand, uses
The Tyranny of Experts to present an alternative view based on four main arguments: "(1) the Blank Slate versus learning from history, (2) nations
versus individuals, (3) conscious direction versus spontaneous solutions, and, above all, (4) authoritarian versus free development" (Bradley, 2016).
This alternate plan of development from the ground up is a more effective and natural way of helping raise underdeveloped countries to the standards
of richer nations.
Part three of Easterly's book is dedicated to the idea of learning from history. Many "development experts" feel that the best way to plan the future of a
nation is to assess its current situation of production, consumption, available resources, etc. and then plan from there. This may

What Role Has Human Activity Played In Causing Climate...

  • 1. What Role Has Human Activity Played in Causing Climate... The change in global climate is the most powerful problem that currently occurs on the earth. The problems of climate change may be caused by both of human activities and natural events. Climate change is the changes that affect the world's weather, including shifts in temperature, ocean level, land, and precipitation. The climate change phenomenon can affect everything in the world not only natural environment, but also human society, and the world economy. This essay aims to evaluate the role of human actions that have caused the climate change. The first part of this essay will talk about the possible causes of climate change, and the second part will discuss the role of human activity, which is cause the climate change. The factors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maslin (2007) points out that Global Warming is caused by the massive increase in greenhouse gases, especially, carbon dioxide that were emitted to the atmosphere. Additionally, human activities are also causing the climate change and greenhouse gases level. Examples of such human activities are burning of coal, exhaust gas emission, deforestation and other agricultural and industrial practices. These activities are altering the atmospheric balance and contributing to climate change (United Nation Environment Programme, 2006). To produce energy by burned coal, oil, and natural gas are produced carbon dioxide, which can affect atmosphere at the same time. People used that energy for transportation, manufacturing, electricity production, and other applications. People in almost every country usually took advantage by using landscape for agriculture, farming, and logging. For example of deforestation in Thailand, when farmers need to plant crops, they choose to burn the old plant instead of dig them out, so it can lead to carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, industrial practices are actions of human, which interest only profitable, and amenity but they did not care about consequence in the future. In conclusion, the climate change events such as the greenhouse effect and global warming are caused by both of changing in natural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Global Strategic Resource Allocation : Dengue Global Strategic Resource Allocation: Dengue in India Health issues and their resolutions vary from one country to another. Various resources across the world attempt to resolve or prevent an outbreak from occurring (Lahey, 2012). The purpose of this discussion is to identify a health issue in another country and identify various factors, health policies, resources and progress to combat the health issue. Health Issue Dengue is a virus spread by infected mosquitoes to almost 400 million people annually would wide (Center of Disease Control, 2016). Dengue is more prominent is tropical and subtropical countries with South East Asia having the greatest incidents (Kularatne, 2015). In 2015, India had 99,913 confirmed cases of dengue with 220 cases resulting in deaths (National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, 2016). Dengue infections have tripled in India since 2010. Socioeconomic Factors There are several influences impacting the spread of the dengue virus. First, India has the worst sewage system in the world (Kuronuma, 2015). According to The Times of India (2013), 80 percent of India's untreated sewage drains into rivers, lakes, and ponds. Next, in order to have clean drinking water, residents use uncovered pots, containers, and bowls to collect rain water (Biswas, Bhunia, and Basu, 2014). The collection containers are optimal places for mosquitoes to lay their larvae. Additionally, the local government is promoting economic growth by allowing companies from other ... • 5. Human Development Index to Measure Living Standards Within... INTRODUCTION Through the ages, economists worldwide have developed different measurements, statistics and standards in order to have an anchor number on how to rate whether they be the development, their perceived inequality among other variables within a country. Because of this, and on the endeavour to unify the measurement of the current situation of a country, the United Nations via the 'United Nations Development Program' in 1990 developed and first published their 'Annual Human Development Report' featuring for the very first time in history the 'Human Development Index' (Stanton, 2007). According to the United Nations (UN), Human Development is the process by which society can improve the living conditions of its citizens through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Naturally the UN has addressed these claims and has improved the index within the years, but there is always space for improvement. The HDI had withstood several critics regarding the poor quality of the data used in the calculations, regarding the selection of indicators and even on the calculations and the formulation itself; nevertheless, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) rebutted some of those claims and used others to improve the HDI calculations. (Stanton, 2007). The HDI, with or without flaws, has up to some extent shaped the way we assess and compare countries. Thanks to the HDI, the development is implied when talking about wellbeing instead of only looking at raw numerical information. Hopefully in the future, the Index shall be improved even more, to finally have a definitive Index on development worldwide. In the year 2000, the UN established eight 'international development goals' regarding: poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, HIV and other diseases, environmental sustainability and global partnership. (Nations, n.d.). For this paper, the HIV pandemic shall be analysed. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that serves as root for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome orAIDS which is a disease that compromises the human immune system supressing it and leaving the body open for other diseases and ... • 6. Global Warming : The United Nations Environment Programme As humanity is already aware, global warming is a life–threatening issue to each and every perishable being on Earth. The climate is changing. The earth is increasing in temperature, and now, there is overwhelming scientific affirmation stating that it is occurring, and human induced. Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as other air pollutants, come together within the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth's surface. Traditionally, the radiation would dissipate into space; however, these pollutants, which can last for centuries within the atmosphere, ambuscade the heat and cause the planet to become even warmer in temperature. It is necessary for humanity to care about this particular issue because if the issue is neglected, all living specimens will cease to exist. Scientists began to raise concerns about climate change in the early 1980s. In 1988, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as well as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), initiated the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in order to assess the scientific research attaining to climate change. Its first significant report was recorded in the year 1990, displaying that there was broad international consensus that human beings induced climate change. This particular report led way to an international convention for climate change, otherwise known as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). ... • 7. The Un Security Council Is The Primary Subsidy For... Since its establishment, the United Nations has played a vital role in total global development. As stated by the UN, their roles and responsibilities consist of maintaining international peace and security through the prevention of conflict and coming up with solutions if ever in conflicting scenarios through peacekeeping efforts. Their UN Security Council is the primary subsidy for international peace and security; promoting sustainable development by working to bridge social, economic, or cultural disparities, and "promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all" (What we do, United Nations); protecting human rights and making such a key aspect and value of the Organization; upholding international law through the usage of courts, multilateral treaties, and tribunals to ensure that international law is being upheld; and to deliver humanitarian aid, which is one of the main principles the UN was founded on: "to achieve international co–operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character" (What we do, United Nations). Let's give a scenario that outlines the role of the United Nations for clarification. If say tension with importers and exporters of The Gambia and Senegal would arise, which it has, given the river that divides the country–it would be in the role of the United Nations to sit representatives of both nations down and to establish an agreement so both parties leave ... Furthermore, cambodia uses a lot of political affairs to sustain the economy. Cambodia is one of the most highly open economy in the "Asia,Pacific region" but with limitation " on trade and capital flows" (Hill & Menon, 2014). B. Even still, we see that Cambodia is ranked 143/188 for human development, which shows that there is still work to be done when it comes to their overall human development. Cambodia has a significant amount of land (176,515 sq km) but also maintains a large population so development when it comes to land is unlikely, unless the government was able to acquire land from nearby territories. With Prime MinisterHun Sen having been in power since 1998 and there being a significant amount of political unrest prior to that, it appears as if there is a need for further governmental development to better relate to the people who live in Cambodia. The Human Development Index for Cambodia shares data about gender inequality within the country, emphasizing the need for human development within this country. For the Gender Inequality Index, Cambodia is ranked 112 out of 159 countries for gender inequality ("Cambodia," n.d.). What has become apparent from the data presented on the standard of living within Cambodia, is that there needs to be a greater emphasis on human development and decreasing inequality within the country. • 9. Global Tourism Industry Is A Vital Component Of The Global... Despite wars, political turmoil, natural disasters, terrorist threats, and economic and energy crises in various areas of the globe, the tourism industry surges and has become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, in 2014 over 1 billion tourist traveled to other nations (World Tourism Organization, 2015). The tourism industry is a vital component of the global economy. It helps to promote peace & stability in the developing world by providing jobs for the locals, generate revenue/income, and promote cultural awareness. Put together, tourism generated nearly seven trillion dollars in 2014 worldwide (Statista, 2014). As the years' progress, so too will the number of tourists. With such a vast economical sector– which receives a fairly large annual income, there are often many issues associated with the industry that need to be addressed and resolved. First and foremost, global tourism puts an immense pressure on the water supplies. Fresh water is perhaps the most important natural resource across the globe. The tourism industry generally overuses fresh water for hotels, swimming pools, golf courses and personal use by staff and tourists. This can result in water shortages and degradation of water supplies (United Nations Environmental Programme, 2015). In dryer regions around the world, such as the Mediterranean, the water scarcity is a particular concern. Since the climate of the Mediterranean is typically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Global and Regional Sustainability Over–population or Overconsumption: Which is the bigger of two vices to the progress of sustainability today? In the age, where the collective value of goods and commodities, the strength of economic markets and the accumulated wealth of individuals dictate the ease of life and the standards of living within society; it is imperative that we as a species reiterate to ourselves that the natural resources that enable us to fulfil all our basic needs, fashion all our desirable wants; and provisions the framework on which we build our cities, economies and daily lives remains limited and finite (McMahon, 2001 ; Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Board, 2005). Comparatively, over–consumption refers to the anthropocentric notion and practice of "ownership" as well as indiscriminate use of natural resources and the environment for personal benefit and gain; without due regard and concern for the availability of such basic resources and natural services to remain viable in the future as well as for others who may have less access to them (Butler, 1994; Goodland & Daly, 1998). Over–consumption can be seen to be directly entrenched within the umbrellas of economic and personal wealth as the means to securing the availability of necessacities and resources (Fine et. Al, 1996). Brown & Cameron (2000) and Princen (1999) concur that the human–centred notion of priority through purchasability fosters the continued practice of unfair and unsustainable practices; whilst concurrently promoting wastage and disconnectedness between societies and the natural environment. The accelerated rate of natural resources utilised globally, noted against only the slightest marginal increase in economic development witnessed within the developing and underdeveloped regions; suggests that the majority of these key resources are being exploited for the further economic benefit of the developed regions by sheer means of their ability to purchase them from these less developed regions, thus limiting the availability of these resources for ... The goal of the UN, regarding gender equality, is to "achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls" (United Nations Development Programme, 2017, para. 1). According to the Cambridge Dictionary, gender equality is defined as "the act of treating women and men equally" (Cambridge Dictionary, 2017). However, this has not been clearly represented throughout majority of human existence. The rivalry between men and women regarding superiority has been an ongoing ordeal globally. There have been numerous occurrences where both genders had the disadvantage of not being accounted for substantially. Typically, when gender equality is mentioned, people tend to think of the Suffragettes and feminist activists from the Women's Rights Movement like, Eleanor Roosevelt and Gloria Steinem. Arguably, females are not the only ones fighting for their rights, especially when it comes to the nursing profession. Worldwide, there is a precedent stereotype that the nurturing and difficult work done by a nurse is a job for a woman. Nursing is considered "feminine" and in certain cultures, it is frowned upon to be a male nurse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I)Introduction The question of what constitutes a "good government" has been a subject written about since the earliest known time. In fact, in the western tradition, Plato wrote extensively on the question, most notably in The Republic (Blackburn and Vance, 2007). He (in the voice of Socrates) asked if the purpose of government was to help one 's friends and hurt one 's enemies, for example. Aristotle, Plato 's student picked up the subject in his treatise on Politics. Finally, the third section A final section discusses how the weaknesses of the good governance concept pose problems for one of the most central claims in the policy literature, that good governance promotes economic development. II)Definitions and Historical Link Between Good Governance and Peace The term "good governance" is perceived, in general as a normative principle of administrative law, which obliges the State to perform its functions in a manner that promotes the values of efficiency, non–corruptibility, and responsiveness to civil society (Rosenau, 1997). It is therefore a principle that is largely associated with statecraft. While the government is not obliged to substantively deliver any public goods, it must ensure that the processes for the identification and delivery of such goods are concrete in terms of being responsive to public demands, and respect for the principles of fairness, justice, and equality, as well as the implementation of policies that are effective and efficient, in order to promote "the deeper human requisites of the citizenry" (Henry, 2010, p. 3).The principles of good governance have also been espoused in the context of the internal operations of private sector organizations (Rae and Wong, 2004, p. 135; see also, Paris, R., 2004, p.

Abstract Contents Water the Future Water is vital for human survival, essential for the necessities of all life on earth; human health and functioning, the natural environment, vegetation, insects, livestock, and a requirement for future generations. With the population growing at alarming rates accompanied with resource depletion an accepted part of society; we are using and exceeding all natural resources we have left. Until we realize there is a vast shortage; by then it will be far too late. • 36. Impact Of Biodiversity On The Environment Furthermore, it is a proven fact that biodiversity changes influence "the flow of ecosystem services", i.e. benefits that people receive from ecosystems, including such services as provisioning, cultural, and regulating ones (Perrings 1). The most acute group of services in terms of biodiversity connection with the environment concerns regulating services, which relate to control of biological variability, presence of pathogens and pests, emergence and mitigation of environmental hazards, as well as many other essential environmental processes (Perrings 1). Hence, it is obvious that if biodiversity significantly alters, the environment will be susceptible to a wide range of various impacts. Moreover, all of them will be of negative character. Diminishing biodiversity, for instance, means that the process of climate regulation performed by ecosystems and their correlation will be threatened and disrupted. As a result, it will intensify problems with the biodiversity and lead to further extinction of many species. Nonetheless, researchers agree that it is difficult to predict exact impacts of biodiversity loss on the environment and the combined effect of the biodiversity loss, degradation of the environment, and climate change. The latter three phenomena may intensify impacts of each other and lead to more severe and abundant problems relating to each of them. Therefore, it becomes of utmost importance to address the existing problems today so that the future of mankind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Geriatric care is derived from the Greek "geron" which means "old man" and "iatreia" which means "the treatment of disease". According to UN– World Assembly on ageing in 1982, Vienna, in Malaysia, older persons are defined as those who are 60 years and above.Ageing nation are defined as a nation where more than 10% of the population is aged more than 60 years old" and by 2020, Malaysia will be defined as an ageing nation (9.9%) Ther eare many phases in life and elder age is considered quite a sensitive phase. This is because old people need attention and care to have a healthy and quality life. In this era, many countries including Malaysia, are now facing the problem of an ageing population. However we should start preparing for future ageing problem in our country and implies strategies such as applying geriatric care professionals to help other states in Malaysia that do not have such services. ... • 38. Effects Of Chemistry On The Environment There is no doubt that our knowledge of science and scientific procedures have changed over time. As new tools and technologies that appeared during the 20th century, chemistry, physics, biology, and other sciences were able to grow and develop at a faster pace. These advances in science have helped humanity by increasing living standards and have brought more widespread wellness to society. For instance, because of the existence of chemistry, society has been provided with more advanced medicine, fabrics for clothes, plastics, rubber, componds of personal care products, parts of cars, home appliances, computers and more. Society has benefited from chemistry; however, our environment is harmed by the consequences of chemistry as well. The emissions of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect, water pollution, the decrease of biodiversity and the impact on human health are consistent and growing effects of the chemical industry and its activities. When chemicals are manufactured, consumed or thrown away, they are able to infiltrate not just the water cycle but also the air and even the ground soil. Depending on the number of polluting ... • 39. Sixth Mass Extinction Paper The sixth mass extinction is on the way and could be as massive as the extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs (Kolbert, 2014). Before learning more about the sixth mass extinction, you'll have to first understand what biodiversity is and what will happen when you tamper with it. According to Anup Shah, author of Why is Biodiversity Important? Who Cares, biodiversity means the variety of life on Earth or in an ecosystem. Every species plays an important role in the ecosystem or in the world, no matter how big or small. A way to incorporate this into easier terms is the food chain or food web. Without a certain species in the cycle, you'll be losing another species and so forth (Shah, 2014). Loss of biodiversity was declared at the first Earth... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Altering the biodiversity could cause the loss of an environment such as the Malayan field rat incident in the Chiew Larn islands. Laurance, William wrote the article, Islands of Extinction, which speaks of the Chiew Larn and how the reservoir was flooded. Larger animals perished due to the fact of how small Chiew Larn islands were during the flood. Chiew Larn island measures from 1 hectare, 2.5 acres, to 60 hectares, 148 acres. Some large animals such as tigers, deer, and elephants might have disappeared into the forest surrounds the reservoir. Because of this flood, it was easier for the Malayan field rat to come and invade the Chiew Larn islands. One of William colleague, Tony Lynam, traveled and did an experiment on the Chiew Larn islands after the flood. Tony's experiment was to use baited live traps to capture small mammals left on the island and ear tags them. The result that Lynam had discovered was astounding because the native mammal species had vanished within 10 hectares of the area (Laurance, 2014). The tragic change of the environment had lost the once healthy and plentiful biodiversity in the area. This is the start of an invader known as the Malayan field rat. A Malayan field rat, an adaptable species, can be compared to the well and common known black rat. The Malayan field rat lives near human settlements and agriculture. • 40. World With The Advanced Technology In a world with the advanced technology, groundbreaking medical procedures, fine dining, and luxury that this modern reality has to offer, it is often difficult to understand the extreme poverty and suffering experienced by many people outside our borders. While it is widely agreed that something should be done to help impoverished countries, how to go about that task is not entirely clear. The "'consensus' of the self–described development community" (Easterly, 2013) in modern economic development advocates large scale central planning by "experts" for development to be applied to a location. This approach often supports the leadership of "benevolent autocrats" to put these plans into action. William Easterly, on the other hand, uses The Tyranny of Experts to present an alternative view based on four main arguments: "(1) the Blank Slate versus learning from history, (2) nations versus individuals, (3) conscious direction versus spontaneous solutions, and, above all, (4) authoritarian versus free development" (Bradley, 2016). This alternate plan of development from the ground up is a more effective and natural way of helping raise underdeveloped countries to the standards of richer nations. Part three of Easterly's book is dedicated to the idea of learning from history. Many "development experts" feel that the best way to plan the future of a nation is to assess its current situation of production, consumption, available resources, etc. and then plan from there.
