Record Labels
  By Krishma Shari
What are record labels and what
         they do and give me?
- Record labels are brands within music industries which are in control of
the marketing of the music recordings and music videos for artists.
- The record label companies have many different samples of control; the
production, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and promotion, of
  the songs.
- They also ensure the artists’ songs have the enforcement of copy right
on it, and that the music is protected and that the general public and
consumers cannot copy the music; create and keep contracts between
the artists so they are under their control; talent scouting is done and
they look for new talent and marketing.
- Artists nowadays increasingly rely on record companies to increase
their name as an artist by promoting them, to build their
reputation, and broaden their audience range.
Major or Independent
                    Record Label
- There are two types of record labels; major or independent record labels.
My artist would be an independent as it would have less capital than other
major record labels, and it would have an effect on my music video
production being lower in quality and not a great distribution.
- As my artist has just been introduced to the music industry, it won’t have
gotten to that stage of being part of a major record label or to afford that
at the starting position of that new coming artist.
- Also, my looking at the song my artist will being singing, this is a popular
song and is very famous, and had because such a massive hit in both the
UK and USA, so the artist will have no problems in signing up to a certain
    record label.
- The song itself has a wide range of audiences, including young teenage
girls and many women going through, or who have experiences some sort
of emotional heartbreak or break up with a partner, so this song appeals
and many audiences could relate to it, and this could be a great hit – this
would interest the record labels hugely, and encourage them to sign on my
artist, as they could guarantee to receive a high amount of profit.
Record Label my Artist would be
              Best Suited To
- I think I would want my artists to belong to a very successful record
label company and by researching the most popular and well-
known stars of the R&B genre, many of the artists are signed to the
‘Roc Nations’ which is where I would preferably want my artist to
be signed to, founded by R&B Rapper Jay-Z.
- This particular record label is surrounded with many different
similar R&B artists, so this one could work well with my artist as
they would have had experience with other similar artists’.
- For example, some of the artists’ within this record label are
Rihanna, Kanye West, Rita Ora, Willow Smith and J Cole and many
  other individuals.
- Some of these R&B artists are very successful and well-known in
the music industry and work very well, which I would want to see
my artist doing further in her career.
What is copyright? How are record
      labels responsible for this?
- Copyright is an enforcement of protection on someone’s personal work or
possession which is originally their own.
- Record labels usually have copy right enforced for the entire artists’ so
their work and music is always protected.
- The copyright symbol appears on anything which is associated with their
work – for example his may be the cover of the digipack or CD, which is
there to know it is under copy right and cannot be duplicated or copied
whatsoever, as this would be illegal to do so.
- During my production, I will ensure the copyright logo is on both my
digipack, adverts and the music video itself so it cannot be copied.
What must I consider when using
copyrighted music? What can and can’t I
                 do?
 - As I am using copyrighted music I have to ensure certain procedures when
making my music videos. When I use the music video, it is only for strictly
for my media studies; however I am not allowed to broadcast this music or
attempt to gain some sort of profit from it.
 - I have not paid the record labels or companies owning this music, any
types of royalties or payments to copy this, so I would not be able to as I
     have not got permission to.
 - I am allowed to use the music for private use and not copy the music
     video.
What have I Learnt?...
Some things I have learnt during this task:
- What record labels are and how they can help me during the production
  of my music video
- I will be using the copyright enforcement on my music video productions
- The difference between major and independent record labels
- What copyright is
- What things I need to consider due to the copyright enforcement on my
  chosen music
