4. CrimeAction Psychological
In an action thriller directors use
physical action in order to create
suspense. During the film there
will be constant movement and
scenes of action to keep the
audience on their toes. Action
films will often have many scenes
that include fights, stunts, chases,
battles and races.
Die Hard, Bourne Identity
In a crime thriller the plot
revolves around a crime and
the rest of the film is trying
to solve who committed the
crime. The storyline focuses
around the criminal and the
protagonist. In a crime
thriller directors use both
action and psychological
aspects to gain suspense and
build tension.
The Usual Suspects, The
Fugitive
A psychological thriller incorporates
elements of drama and mystery. To
build tension the director will often
use the mind of the characters.
Throughout the whole film the
characters will rely on their mental
resources in order to solve problems.
This subgenre is very similar to
horror.
Rear Window, Taxi Driver
5. Romantic
Supernatural
A supernatural thriller is based around
the supernatural to create suspense, for
example ghosts, spirits and miracles. In
this type of thriller there is usually a
plot the revolves or involves religion
because it questions the unknown of
life.
Sinister, The Others, Angel Heart
In a romantic thriller it focusses around the romance of
two characters. The romance between the characters
develops with a sense of mystery and danger. The

9. Most thrillers are set in a suburban town or in
a big city, like London. This is so that it makes
the storyline more realistic to the viewer.
However occasionally there will be thrillers
that are set in an exotic location or foreign
cities.
There are some thrillers that do not go with
this because they are set in surreal
environments, for example science fiction
thrillers.
Sound and music can create different environments. To create tension,
quieter soundtracks with simpler tunes such as a piano are played. This
can create an anxious environment and put the audience on the edge of
their seat. This with a darker atmosphere can make the scene feel eerie.
Faster soundtracks with a heavy beat and tune can create a fast paced
scene and with quick editing this can create an action scene with simply
sound and editing.
Different speeds and instruments can create a song for any environment
and can change the feelings of the audience, this can help them have
certain feeling for the environment to make it seem more real but if the
wrong song is chosen it could further distance the audience from the
film.
