Abstract
The threat of heart disease isn't a new one. It's been glaring at usfor years,
makingus question every detail of our complicated lifestyle choices, diet and
level of physicalactivity. It'sbeen a leadingkiller in the West and has now
aggressively madeits way to India. The purposeof this application is to
develop a Heart Attack Detection android application for heart patient. A new
mobile app compatible with the Android thatcan immediately alert doctors,
friends, and loved oneswhen an unexpected health event — such as a heart
attack or fall — occurs. Mobile technology with this android application can
save many lives. Although the app is primarily targeting older peoplewho are
at greater risk for falls and heart attacks.
3. Motivation
I want to create this projectbecause Heart attack rate is increasingday by day.
Sometime patients get heart attack but don’tget any help because they can’t
inform their relatives for help. So this android application would bevery
usefulin such conditions.
4. Proposal Design
The purposeof this Android application is the detection of heart attack and
inform patient’s relatives, doctor and friends for help. In this projectthere will
be two phase.
1.Android Programming
2.Arduino Programming
5. Android Programming
This Android App isfor caretakers of patients. In this phase we will create
Android application which will show patient’s heart rate and pulsewiththe
help of IR pulseSensor which will be woreby patient on finger tip or wrist.
Android app willbe connected with Arduino board vialow power Bluetooth
technology. So that Heart rate in app will be regularly updated if it willbe in
Bluetooth range of device{Which is presenton finger tip of patient}.
This app also have a feature to find my devicewhich is wore by patient. When
Caretaker click on find my devicethen a ringalert command executeand send
to arduino board via Bluetooth.By ringing, user can easliy find his device.
Thisis the mockupof androidapp.Inthisfig.“0
bpm” showsheartbeatperminute andpulse will
be showninthe greengraph.
6. Arduino Programming
In the second phase there will be an Arduino board with IR pulsesensor,
Bluetooth module, GPS ,speaker and GSM module.
Infrared PulseSensor
Arduino Board with
Bluetooth,gps ,speaker and
GSM module
7. How It Will Work
Step 1. Patient will need to wear IR sensor to his/her finger tip otherwise on
wrist. This IR pulsesensor will be connected with Arduino board.
Step 2. The sensor itself consists of an infrared emitter and detector mounted
side-by-side and pressed closely against the skin. When the heart pumps,
blood pressurerisessharply, and so does the amountof infrared light from
the emitter that gets reflected from blood tissues and back to the detector. The
detector passes morecurrentwhen it receives more light, which in turn
causes a voltage drop to enter the amplifier circuitry. Result of this is Pulse
generation.
Step 3. All information of contact will be already presentin Arduino board
with GSM module. So that he/she can save contact no. in SIM card which will
be inserted in Arduino GSM slot.
Step 4. Users set individualpreferenceson whatthey consider to be normal
levels of each criteria. If the sensor detects a change outside of these limits, a
real-time alert is sent to designated caregivers, family members, or other
contacts with information about the user'slocation and condition.
Step 5. The Android application i.e“Safe Heart” willbe connected with
Arduino board viaBluetooth because Bluetooth is low power consumption
technology. Arduino willcontinuously transmitpulsedataso that “Safe Heart”
app could show pulseand Heart rate. This app will be for caretaker of patient.
So if patient get heart attack then Arduino board willfirst look for phone in
Bluetooth range. If phonewhich is connected with this board then Arduino
8. will trigger an alarm to Android phone. If phoneis not in Bluetooth rangethen
Arduino willtrigger a message and gpscoordinates to contact no. presentin
SIM card of GSM module.
Step 6. The Gadgetwhich is on patient’s finger tip or wrist also features an
SOS button, which allows the user to send an emergency message to pre-
determined contacts. It will also simultaneously placea phonecall to your
primary contact.
Step 7. By this alert system caretaker of patient can alwaysattach with
patient.
11. Implementation
First step would be deep study of interaction & code flow Arduino and
Android.
To develop android application, Useof java programminglanguagewith
Eclipse IDE and ADT
Designingthe User Interface.
Use openclipartand adobe photoshop for creating icons.
Creating IR pulse sensor body to wear at finger tip.
To program Arduino board, Useof C programminglanguagewith
Arduino IDE.
HardwareImplementation: Arduino board, Bluetoothmodule, IR pulse
sensor, GPS,GSM module, Speaker.

13. About me
I am a FOSS enthusiast & familiar with FOSS from 2 years.
I have no commitmentsduringsummer.
I have workingknowledgeof Java,C,C++ ,Visualbasic & Python.
I take Summer of code as an opportunity to get engaged with Systers
Community ascontributor and continuethis association even after
Gsoc.
I would notjust based my being the right person for the task on my
proficiency in programming, butalso on the understandingof logic
that will make things work, a prior knowledgeand understandingof
what the mobile developmentprojectexplainsand also the readiness
to contributes in terms of code and innovativeideas for the
betterment and completeness of the task.
I have worked on coding projectsin Android and Iam very excited
about this opportunity becauseI worked hard in this week. I am
willing and ready to extend the amountof time I inputinto the
developmentof this project.I’ll give my best.
I would loveto be contacted if any part of this proposalis not clear to
you.
Thank you for consideringthis proposaland for your time.
