This document outlines a lesson plan to teach fifth grade students about the three states of matter over the course of a week. On Monday, students will be introduced to matter and what it is. On Tuesday, they will learn about solids, and on Wednesday they will learn about liquids. On Thursday, the lesson will cover gases, and on Friday students will participate in activities to identify samples as solid, liquid, or gas. Throughout the week, students will use computers and apps to supplement their learning. The goal is for students to describe the three states of matter with 90% accuracy by the end of the lesson.
2. Analyze learner
The learners are a fifth grade class.
They may not be all the same type of learners, so to
make sure that every learning style is met tons of
different activities will be present.
None of the students have exceptionalities and all
are your average fifth grader!
3. Main Objective
Students will be able to recite and describe all of the
states of matter within a week with 90% accuracy.
This will be done through research and on hands
activities to understand the different types of matter.
For example, the class will be given different items
and will be asked to tell what state of matter the item
may be in.
4. Day by Day Breakdown
States of Matter
Monday:
Introduce and go
over what matter
really is.
Tuesday:
Go over the first state
of matter: solid. Talk
about what it is.Wednesday:
Introduce the second
state of matter: liquid.
Give examples and
learn about what it is.
Thursday:
Learn about the
3rd state of
matter: gas. Go
over what it is in
class.
Friday:
Give examples and do
activities where you
decide which state of
matter something is in.
5. Use of Technology
The students will be able to use computers and
school safe websites to understand the different
states of matter.
If Ipads are available to the classroom, students will
look at different apps that include states of matter
and how to figure out which is which.
Technology is key to our future education, so it is
important to include the use of technology at
younger ages.
