10. THE ARGUMENT ESSAY
• Our first essay will be an argument essay that uses either the film or
the novel, The Chamber of Secrets (if you have read it or want to
read it), for its basis. To better understand the basic features of the
argument essay, we will read pages 267- 285 in The St. Martin’s
Guide. These pages include three argument essays that will serve as
models for the one we will write. They also include a section titled
“Basic Features.” Each chapter in this text offers a look at these
fundamental aspects of each different kind of essay. I cannot stress
the importance of reading this section carefully.
11. LOOK AT CHAPTER 6: ARGUING
A POSITION.
• IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE TEXT YET, DON’T WORRY. THE FIRST CHAPTER IS LINKED
UNDER THE CLASS 2 PRESENTATION. YOU CAN EITHER DOWNLOAD THE TEXT OR
READ IT IN THE WEBSITE WINDOW, DEPENDING UPON WHETHER YOU CLICK THE
LINK OR THE PREVIEW BUTTON.
• PAUSE THE VIDEO HERE, AND READ THE BASIC FEATURES SECTION: 267-269. AFTER
YOU FINISH READING, COME BACK TO THE VIDEO.
12. THE BASIC FEATURES
• BASIC FEATURES ARE THE KEY PARTS OF A CERTAIN KIND OF ESSAY. OUR FIRST ESSAY IS ONE IN WHICH WE
WILL ASSERT A POSITION AND ARGUE FOR IT. THE FOUR BASIC FEATURES PRESENTED IN THIS SECTION ARE
ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF ALL “ARGUING A POSITION” ESSAYS. WHAT ARE THE FOUR FEATURES?
4. A Readable Plan
1. A Well-Presented Issue
2. A Well-Supported Position
3. An Effective Counterargument
13. READ “CHILDREN NEED TO PLAY, NOT
COMPETE BY JESSICA STATSKY: PAGE 270
• THE FIRST READING OF EACH CHAPTER IS A STUDENT PAPER, WRITTEN BY A FIRST-
YEAR COLLEGE STUDENT. THESE ESSAYS ARE ANNOTATED. AS YOU READ, NOTE THE
HIGHLIGHTING AND THE MARGIN QUESTIONS. THINK ABOUT THE BASIC FEATURES
AS YOU READ.
• PAUSE THE VIDEO HERE, AND READ THIS ESSAY. RETURN TO THE VIDEO WHEN YOU
HAVE FINISHED.
14. 1. How does Statsky present the issue in a way that prepares readers
for her argument?
2. How does she qualify her position in par. 2?
3. What reasons does she forecast here, and in which paragraphs
does she discuss each reason?
Now briefly consider both
this section of the text
and the questions below
it. Refer to the pages on
the Basic Features for
help. Pause the video to
read and think.
15. 4. How successful is
Statsky’s argument in support
of her thesis? Consider
paragraph three for our
discussion. Is she
convincing? Why?
“When overzealous parents
and coaches impose adult
standards on children’s sports,
the result can be activities that
are neither satisfying nor
beneficial to children.”
Pause the video to read and think.
16. 5. How does Statsky try to refute the objection in
paragraph 6? Pause the video to read and think.
Pause the video to read and think.
17. 6. How effective do you think Statsky’s argument in par. 7 is? Why?
“80 to 90 percent of
children who play
competitive sports
at a young age drop
out by sixteen”
(Kutner).
18. 7. In criticizing some
parents’ behavior in pars. 8–
9, Statsky risks alienating
her readers. How effective is
this part of her argument?
Pause the video to read and
think.
20. HOMEWORK
Read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapters 3-6.
Read In Chapter 6: Arguing a Position. 267-285: the Estrada and Etzioni essays
Do all of the reading before you move to the next lesson.
Discussion #2: Answer the following:
1. From the Estrada essay: Consider what each of the following elements contributes to the story Estrada is
trying to tell about bullying:
--the title
--Estrada’s remembered experience of being upset by the name “the Washington Redskins” (par. 1–2)
--the anecdote about the Native American father upset about the practice
at his son’s school of celebrating Braves’ victories with Indian costumes
and tomahawk chops (par. 8)
2. Notice that in paragraphs 11–13, Estrada offers hypothetical examples of
team names for ethnic groups. How do these examples support Estrada’s
position?

At the end of this summer session, you will receive a letter grade based on the points that you accrue in class. Please note that you must have a 72% in the class to get a grade of C.
Slide 16: Notice the semester week, days, and classes are listed on the left. The project title is listed above the course work. Here it says “The Argument,” which is the kind of essay we are working on. Below that is the daily class agenda. Note here, we are reminded of today’s outline: Course introduction and an introduction to essay #1. You can use this information to prepare for each class. To the right of the daily agenda is the homework. The information here will also be presented on the final slide of our daily PowerPoint.
She discusses the growth of organized sports in the US, and she refers to popular organizations that are familiar to the reader. She points out that some parents and coaches push the kids so hard that they don’t have fun. Can you identify her thesis?, that is her central argument?
She qualifies her argument by pointing out which age group she is discussing.
She sets up the reader for her argument by naming her reasons for her opinion.
What is her topic sentence here? Does it support her thesis?
What kind of examples does she use? Do they support her topic sentence?
Does she acknowledge readers’ concerns and points of view
Does she concede an objection and modifying the argument to accommodate it
Does she refute readers’ objections or by arguing against opposing positions
Does her topic sentence support her thesis?
Does her example support her topic sentence?
Do you think most readers have seen, or at least understand that there are, parents and coaches who behave in these ways?
Does the essay come to a close? As a reader, do you feel like the essay is done? Or did you feel like you needed more information?
