This slideshow offers links to simultaneous searches from news sources from various regions around the world. Researchers can enter their own keywords and complete a search from more than one popular site within that region. Note: due to file size, this needed to be downloaded as a .pdf. To obtain active links, link into the URL in the description above.
2. “
Are you finding that you
typically infuse an American
perspective into your research?

3. You will notice that various regions of the world illuminate various trends. You
may benefit from searching your research keywords in multiple regions while
collecting resources.
In one region over another:
• Various cultural, political, or religious perspectives may become apparent
• You may see recent events or activities related to your keyword(s)
• You may see that they approach or manage various issues in a different
manner
We benefit from seeking varied
perspectives;
4. Instructions for use
You can always look for news websites from
other countries that translate their content into
English.
However, it can get time consuming.
Did you know that you can search news sources
simultaneously?
5. our minds broadened by the results and
intrigued by the “flavor” of each;
In order to search multiple sites simultaneously, you can type “site:” to
specify one site that you would like to search and add “OR site:” to add
additional sites.
Example of what I might place into a search box
body image site:asiatoday.com OR site:taipeitimes.com
6. to embrace our similarities;
Option #1: You can perform your own Google search of the top news
sources in various regions and design a simultaneous search of your own
similar to the one described on the previous slide
Option #2: You can use searches that I have begun (see following slides)

15. to participate well in an increasingly
global society;
You can even make predictions.
These can be integrated into your analysis/annotations as you write or into
your conclusion as you wrap up your topic.
• How will this information change local society?
• How will it change the global community?
• How might daily life change?
• How might thoughts and beliefs change?
• What statistics might change?
• What laws may change?
16. to interact with increased understanding;
How did I select my sites?
I attempted to:
• find sites that originated in each region (authored by those that live within the
region) and not outside the region
• find news sources that covered larger area/regions
• find some sources from more populated countries within the region
• find sites that automatically translated to English
• include news sources that are the most searched/used according to web rankings
You can search for other news sources through Google based upon any country you wish.
Feel free to adjust the simultaneous search by adding or deleting any sites of your
choosing for your own unique search.
17. to develop our own opinions;
What about censorship and misinformation?
Through these processes, you will only receive uncensored information from
the countries providing the news.
All countries across the globe experience the spread of misinformation. If you
use the URLs provided, they will link you to authentic sites (not imposter
sites). You will want to employ all of the tools that you would normally apply
to determine whether the information is trustworthy.
18. TOOLS
conduct a “linear search” or “read laterally. This is the process of searching outside of the source on the regular
web for the same information. Look for whether multiple sources published the same information. Look for whether
the URL domain is the same as within your article or whether it is slightly manipulated. Did they manipulate or
amplify the content found from other sources? Did they place it into false context? Is there an “about us” page, an
author, a publication date? If you search more more information on the author, is it readily available through a
simple Google search?
Botometer this tool looks for bots and automated accounts on Twitter
Reverse image search Compare if the image is the same as the original (it may be hard to find the original to
compare if the content was shared too widely)
Watchdog and fact-checking sites (Factcheck.org, Snopes, etc.) - there are studies that indicate that even these
may be politically driven at times.

19. 19
SYSTEMATIC THOUGHT PROCESS
∙ Consider your emotional response If it is high, take a few minutes to consider whether you
may be prey to misinformation
∙ Consider whether it is hyper-partisan If it is extreme in its political spectrum, take a few
moments and consider whether you want something with this level of bias. If so, how will you
balance it?
While it is not 100% guaranteed that you will identify misinformation, a heavy
combination of these techniques will help you.
