1. Question 1: In what ways
does your media product
use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of
real media products?
2. Slow Paced Editing
Slow paced editing is widely used in opening
sequences for our chosen genre , this is because
the slow paced editing sets the scene , it makes
the audience focus on a chosen shot for longer
which will prompt them to ask questions and will
also engage the audience therefore they will
want to watch more of the film.
3. Close Up Shots
Close ups are also used in opening sequences , they are
chosen to withhold any visual information from the
audience , the close up shot only allows the audience to
see what is being focused on and blocks any other visuals
from being seen by the audience . By withholding
information in this way the audience will want to carry on
watching the film as they will want to know more about the
film and to see what information was previously hidden
from them.

s from ;
The
Good
, The
Bad
, and

4. Establishing Shots
Establishing shots are widely used in opening
sequences , they are used in order to establish
the context of a scene by showing the
relationship between its important figures and
objects , it is typically a long shot at the
beginning of a scene indicating where and
sometimes when the remainder of the scene
takes place.
Example from
‘ The
Shawshank
Redemption’
where we see
the first
glimpse of the
prison.
Example from our
Opening Sequence
5. Fast Paced Editing
Fast paced editing refers to a number of
consecutive shots in quick succession , fast pace
editing is typically used in order to convey a lot of
information very quickly or to imply disorder and
chaos. Fast cutting is also frequently used when
shooting dialogue between two or more
characters, changing the viewer's perspective to
either focus on the reaction of another
character's dialog, or to bring to attention the
non-verbal actions of the speaking character.
6. Over The Shoulder Shot
A shot where the camera is positioned behind one
subject's shoulder, usually during a conversation. It
implies a connection between the speakers as
opposed to the single shot that suggests distance.
Example from the opening of ‘ The Godfather’
8. The Ritual
For our specific horror opening sequence, there are
conventions of a horror opening sequence that are widely
utilised in film media, these include slow paced editing. Which
is widely used in the horror genre, this is done in order to set
the pace of a film, a slow pace will enable the audience to
fully engage with what the film is trying to show and therefore
understand the synopsis of the film, we did not follow typical
conventions of horror films as we instead opted to use a
quicker pace of editing

9. Lighting
The high key lighting isn’t widely used in
opening sequences looking to set a
mysterious setting , however we
juxtaposed the bright and happy looking
atmosphere with the sinister and
menacing meaning of the scene , the
audience believes the character of Mary
Shaw is safe as she is in an open and
bright environment but this is not the
case as she is attacked in daylight , a
typical horror film would possibly prefer
to use the darkness of the night to shoot
in in order to create a more menacing
atmosphere
Low Key lighting is
used throughout
our opening
sequence this is
done to show
mystery throughout
the sequence and
convey the evil and
sinister
atmosphere.
10. Close Ups
This is an example from our opening sequence.
A close up of the police officer character is shown
It hides his facial expressions and makes him seem sinister
and evil since the low key lighting
Withholds any actual information from the audience
11. Vulnerable Characters
The character of Mary Shaw is very vulnerable ,
her vulnerability is portrayed through different
ways such as her white shirt which has
connotations of innocence and shows she is a
weak and vulnerable character ,
Her body
positioning
shows she is
vulnerable
because of
her closed
body
posture.
