1. Film A2 Research Presentation Plan (Auteur)
The Research Presentation is meant to be in the form of notes for a
presentation. The best way to this is to create a PowerPoint Presentation in
which each slide contains a few pertinent bullet pints, some imagery or a clip
where relevant. The main body of your presentation should then be written in
the notes section beneath each slide.
Notes for presentations as a whole :
• 10-15 slides of around a 100 words each
• Each slide should make reference or directly quote at least 1 source from
you Annotated Catalogue. Your Catalogue should have all sources
numbered so please add the number of the source to which you refer in
brackets after each reference.
• Remember not to digress. Stay focussed on your topic.
• Develop an argument, have a point.
• Use imagery where possible
• When including a moving image or scene, add the scene number or time
code info beneath.
The Plan (possible; interpret the topic in whatever way you see
fit)
1. Title: Title of presentation and your name
2. General Context:
o Director as Auteur.
o Auteur as someone whose individual signature is identifiable across
a broad range of films.
o Signature characteristics could be stylistic as well as based on
Genre, Subject Matter or Theme
o Significance of director you are investigating; Cultural, Critical,
Commercial and in terms of Influence.
2. 3. Characteristics:
o Identify the 3 or 4 main characteristics you think distinguish your
director from others.
o Use Sources to back you up
o If there is some debate as to their applicability, briefly dicuss.
o Identify Focus Films
4. Biographical Info:
o Brief Biographical Info with a special emphasis on factors that may
have led to your subject’s stylistic or thematic characteristics.
o This is an ideal point at which to use Primary Research
5. Film 1, Characteristic 1:
o Use a scene from your first film to discuss one of your director’s
characteristics.
o Use your own textual analysis as well as that of others
o Contextualise the scene in the rest of the film: Is it out of character
compared to the rest of the film?
o Has this scene been used by others proof of your director’s
signature style?
6. Film 1 Reception:
o Has Critical and Popular Reception of the film been positive?
o Did it help to mark out your director?
o Did Critics notice the signature elements and, if so, quote them.
o Did Audiences notice (use imdb comments) ?
7. Repeat Slide 5 for Film 2
8. Repeat Slide 6 for Film 2
9. Repeat Slide 5 for Film 3
10.Repeat Slide 6 for Film 3
11.General Consensus:
o Do most people agree with the points you are making?
3. o Are there some who disagree?
o Quote for both sides of the argument
12.Director Himself:
o What has the Director got to say about it? Is it characteristic of his
approach to film-making?
o From what statements you can find, how much of his signature
seems to be intentional?
13.Your Argument:
o Make an argument for or against your hypotheses or, even better,
formulate a new one.
o Try to find some middle ground and try to offer a new way of
thinking about things.
14.Summary with pithy quotes.
15.End with a scene.
