2. ABOUT ZPS..
â˘
â˘
â˘
The Zaverben Popatlal Sabhagrah now looks futuristic,
yet trendy.
For the residents of Ghatkopar, the new Zaverben
Popatlal Sabhagrah is a boon. The auditorium was
actually constructed in 1984 on the third floor of
Rashtriya Shala (an English and Gujarati school). It
was not just an auditorium for the school but
throughout the year it used to be hired for dramas,
cultural programs and social events. Recently, the
trustees thought it could do with a face-lift and
appointed architect Ajit Bhuta of Ajit Bhuta and
Associates to change its look.
Funded by the Dhanji Deveshi family, the cost amounted
to almost Rs. 2crore. But for the four walls and the
roof of the old structure everything else was
demolished. Yet the school building lay untouched.

â˘
âThe idea was to built something that is modern and
trendy, in short keeping with the times. The floor of
the auditorium was modified from sloping to steps and
an ozoneâ system has been installed for fresh and clean
air with better air change,â explained Bhuta. The foyer
is larger; there are new and spacious lifts, pushback
seats, more legroom, and the latest stereophonic sound.
Earlier the capacity of the hall was for 720 people,
but now with the modifications it has been reduced to
676. A âpulsar power pack systemâ for the lighting has
been fitted making it flexible to operate from three
different locations.
The control rooms for the light and the sound have been
separated for better maintenance and the colors from
dull grey and browns are now bright yellow, red and
green. âThe basic concept was to give the place a
futuristic yet aesthetic and vibrant interior. We have
tried to keep the mood of the place young. This is
popular place for Gujarati dramas and social
gatherings. There are around 32 Jain Jagruti
organizations in Ghatkopar and throughout the year
there are programs being held. That was one of the main
