How I used Sorority Row in the
 production of my film trailer
         By Katy Bailey
I researched thoroughly into the trailer and
poster of Sorority Row, as a film which had
the same genre and audience that I was
aiming at, which was quite different from
other horror films, by basing it on a chick flic
and then having a disruption to equilibrium
      (Todorov) and changing to horror.
Trailer
• I used the timings for the Sorority Row
trailer as a template. It showed the
disruption to equilibrium at 19 seconds
after the production titles, so I did the
same for mine. I found this effective as it
did not give too long for the audience to
notice it was horror, and therefore to draw
  in the correct target audience.
• The trailer showed the intertitles with the
narrative after the horror genre had been
introduced, I thought this was a good idea
as the intertitles are effective to shape the
narrative and the genre, and as the
beginning of the trailer would not suit the
intertitles theme (the font and colour
scheme) and could give away the horror
  plot.
• As a major part of the make up to the
trailer, and the shaping of the genre, I
used a known, upbeat song to show
emphasis the antithesis between this part
of the trailer and the rest where it was
horror, where the music was changed to
shape the horror, to an eery music.
Poster

I also researched carefully into the Posters for the films, and noted the codes and
conventions within them. I noticed parts of both within the mise-en-scene which
attracted me particularly to the posters, and therefore placed some of the
features from each of the posters onto my one.
• In my poster I used the colour scheme from the
one on the right, with the dark colouring, and
found that the flames from the fire looked very
effective but did not know how to fit it in. I then
used the idea of the photographs in the poster
on the left within mine, and put the idea of that
with the flames, and came up with the idea of
setting the photograph of the main character
  alight.
