Explain Why Did You Choose This Event In Your Life
Why did you choose this event in your life? I chose this event in my life because it was one of the
most stressful parts of my life. Exams were coming in and I had to lose a lot of weight. My grades
were horrible and all I worried about was not passing. From all the stress I kept gaining weight
which brought my self–esteem down. I had a lot of problems at school with friends and my
relationship with my mom was horrible. I would stay up until 3 am I talking to friends, arguing all
the time with my mom. The reason this has happened so suddenly in grade 9 is that in grade 8 I was
a loser who just wanted to fit in. I wasn't pretty like the other girls, wasn't fit as them, etc. in grade 9
I hoped for a new start to just fit but all hell came ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it is dealing with their parents' divorce, friends, family, etc. but the hardest part is
overcoming it. Many people commit suicides or cut themselves or even start drinking or smoking. I,
for instincts, have gone through this but not ever alcohol or drugs as it goes against my religion.
Others can absolutely learn from my experience as a motivation to have hope and continue because
the little things can mess you up the most and impact your life the most. Don't wait until the last
moment to meet your dream. Start slowly and success will chase you. Never give up, the three most
important words. Never give up.
Explain your choice of music. Include the title of song and artists or group artists. My song of
choice is Divenire by Ludovico Einaudi. I have chosen this song as it has been one of my favorite
classical pieces of music of all time and one of the greatest piano plays in history. It was also one of
the songs in the 2012 London Olympic games and in the P&G–Best Jobs commercial. This song is
really motivating and touches the soul within with its beautiful chords and melodies. It's great to
calm down and soothe the body before a competition or an exam or test.

Strands Of Red: A Short Story
Strands of red disappearing from existence, Calvin witnessed Amos slip from the yeti's life–
snatching swipe, and its ensuing thunderous howl rattled the frozen stiff air. Fists flung against the
ground, dispersing a crystal storm across its surroundings that played a jarring, fickle–noted song
against the ice. The yeti swung its body in a semicircle before stampeding towards Calvin, its
currant–stained, sawtooth teeth festering for a single tear at his flesh. And claws click–clacked at a
spine–chilling speed while screeching across the field like nails on a chalkboard. Calvin remained
hunched in place, scowling, crushing the snow within his hands, his gaze darting back–and–forth
between the two rampaging monstrosities. In seconds, white

A Song Of Ice And Fire: George R. Martin
The expert I chose is George R.R. Martin. Martin is a writer most famous for his "A Song of Ice and
Fire" medieval fantasy novels; the series that the popular "Game of Thrones" show is adapted from.
He began writing comic books, and many of his early books did not generate the massive adoration
that his magnum opus has. In addition to writing books and comics he was also a long–time writer
for the show "The Twilight Zone". Gaining experience in multiple domains has helped him shape
his skills and develop his own unique writing style. He is now a senior citizen who has been writing
for several decades. From fans as well as professional critics Martin has received a plethora of
feedback on his work helping him understand what he has done

George R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire
Strictly speaking, I understand with great deal "the snuffy" reaction spreading about concerning
George R. R Martin's somewhat infinitely delayed next instalment of the legendary "A Song of Ice
and Fire" that was originally set to be released sometime this year. For fans this inevitably means
even greater diversion between their two favorite disputes: the novel and HBO's GOT, which is why
the phrase "understand with great deal" was chosen specifically to capture the culture of followers
reaction to Mr. Martin's public announcement that the book was not yet finished. As a fan, I am no
stranger to long, deeply engrained hours of caring perhaps "too much" about the infinite realms of
fiction that have legitimized my Fangirl resume thus far–and of course, this type of loyalty often
merits emotional response. Some people choose to paint their faces and throw beer bottles at their

Rather you care to believe it, there are simply seasons for writers when our hands and brain align to
perform cosmic masterpieces! Conversely, this is often followed by seasons when every damn word
comes out with the momentum of tar, until your hands cannot front the weight of one more,
dispassionate syllable. We are often labeled as self–serving, pretentious beings who spend more
time concerned with our own thoughts, opinions in the mirror of self–loathing–than any other
artistic expression combined! And to some extent, clichés aside: this has to be true to write anything
worth reading–for you fan–lot. The hours writers spend in the throes of whatever universe is
propelling their pen, is the stuff we fans revel about in. With that being said that connection with

The Games Of Thrones By George R.r
Introduction
The Games of Thrones is a 1st book in 'A song of Ice and Fire'. It is a fantastic adaptation of George
R.R. Martin. The story of The Games of Thrones is original , multi–layered with lots of sub plots,
and is non –formulaic. It is incredibly exciting ,joyful, suspenseful ,mysterious, and very
unpredictable and there is no way for you to know what is going to happen in this novel. The story
is also very violent . The characters are well developed and enjoyable whereas some characters are
even clever and secretive. Unlike most fantasy books, Martin's characters are not totally good or
evil. His characters are also very personable so we can think of them as real people and can develop
strong emotions towards them throughout the novel. Many of the characters in the novel The Games
of Thrones are killed off and new ones appear throughout the novel. The title sequence consists of a
three–dimensional map of the world, which includes the continents of Westeros and Essos, located
on the inner surface of a sphere. At the center of the sphere is a light source, a sun surrounded by an
astrolabe–like arrangement of rotating rings. The Game of Thrones is set in the SevenKingdoms of
Westeros of Medieval Europe. Here in the novel The Games of Thrones we see that brothers plots
against each other.

A Song Of Ice And Fire Analysis
A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of books written by George R.R. Martin that is set in a fantasy
world with medieval style combat and politics. Several characters in this series are inspired by
individuals that were involved in an English war during the medieval era. A major source of
inspiration for George R.R. Martin was the Wars of the Roses, which occurred in England from
1455 to 1487, and this helped him create several of his main characters including: Tyrion Lannister,
Joffrey Baratheon, and Cersei Lannister. George R.R. Martin took inspiration from kings and queens
from the Wars of the Roses and the period before the war. Martin used their personalities to create
appropriate characters in his books. Tyrion Lannister was inspired by ... Show more content on

Her first tenure lasted from 1445 to 1461 while her second tenure was much shorter and only lasted
from 1470 to 1471. Margaret often ruled the kingdom from behind her husband and involved herself
with the struggles of dealing with a rebellion. Margaret was also known for spending large amounts
of money to treat herself and exert her influence on everyone around her. Cersei Lannister married
Robert Baratheon at the age of 17 and became the queen of Westeros. Cersei's reign as queen lasted
for 15 years and she eventually became queen regent when Robert died and Joffrey was taking the
throne. Cersei is described as being a very cunning and manipulative character throughout the
series. These attributes help her maintain a high level of power when Joffrey becomes king. "If I
accept you, you shall be the King's Hand in name, but my Hand in truth. You will share all your
plans and intentions with me before you act, and you will do nothing without my consent." (A Clash
of Kings 67). This quote shows Cersei talking to Tyrion and asserting her power by demanding that
Tyrion communicate all of his plans to her. "With its aid she could reward her friends by gifts of
cash, presents of jewels and other favours, and overawe her foes by the extent of her power." (Myers

Tyrion is a fictional character in the book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin
and the television adaption Game of Thrones on HBO. Tyrion is a dwarf born to Lord Tyrian
Lannister, of the House of Lannister, which is comparable to the modern day Rockefeller family.
Tyrion, was hated by his father and his sister and is referred to as "the monster who killed his
mother." His father could never accept his dwarfism and was treated like a second class person, with
limited rights only because he carried the Lannister name. His sister, Cersei, despised him greatly
and was always setting Tyrion up for his demise, and this hatred was passed down to her son King

Similarities Between Othello And Robb Hawk
The Young Wolf and the Barbary Horse:
A Comparison of Robb Stark and Othello Since the very beginnings of literature authors have
borrowed from each other. One of the most copied authors is William Shakespeare. Modern fantasy
author George R.R. Martin is among the names of those who are inspired by Shakespeare. In
Martin's epic saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, many characters share similarities with others in the
works of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Othello and Martin's Robb Stark are two of each
respective author's most identifiable characters. Othello: a fearless warrior who is unmade by his
actions off of the battlefield. Robb Stark: a leader of an undefeated military force who is murdered
for breaking a promise. Both Othello and Robb Stark share common traits and each man can trace
his downfall to one thing: vulnerability to manipulation. Robb Stark and Othello are used by those
who they consider to be friendly because they appear to be vulnerable. Strengths and weaknesses
are made apparent to all who observe. While both men are skilled warriors, they both admit their

Othello is a fearless warrior who possesses such skill in battle that "the Senate... sent out about three

Turks; while fighting such as powerful force as the Ottoman Empire, the Venetians need all the help
that they can get. Unfortunately, for all of Othello's military skill, he lacks the skills that are needed
outside of the battlefield. Othello claims his shortcomings in the beginning of the play, stating,
"Rude am I in my speech,/ And little blessed with the soft phrase of peace" (1.3.80–81). Othello
knows his strength lies while commanding men in war and not while he is in the relative peace that

Dylan Thomas 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night'
The word musical is a synonym for the word rhyme, and for good reason. Subconciously we are
able to remember the song lyrics to a favorite song, but not often to a poem without rhyme. The
poems Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, Sympathy by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and Do Not Go Gentle
Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas all use rhyme to make the poem more musical because
when a poem is more melodic it is easier to connect to the emotions poem.
The poem Fire and Ice is about destruction, and the inevitable end of the world. Robert Frost's
rhyming writing in the poem helps you connect more to the speaker and understand what he is
saying when he is talking about fire and ice, and it helps you picture the destruction and end of the
world. The poem says, "From what I've tasted of desire/ I hold with those who favor fire" (3–4). In
this line, the emotion desire is connected to fire. Almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dylan Thomas uses the musicality of the rhyming lines to get people to relate to the feeling of
dying. Nobody who is reading the poem has felt the feeling of dying, so he has more people that he
needs to connect to. He uses key words that rhyme like night, light, height, and the repetition of the
word rage helps you realate to the poem. He uses the night as a relatable metaphor for dying. He
describesthe setting of the sun, or the "dying of the light" to represent the light going out in ones
life. These rhyming lines make the poem easier to comprehend. "And you, my father, there on the
sad height/ Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray/ Do not go gentle into that good
night/ Rage, rage against the dying of the light" (15–19). In line 15 of the poem, Thomas is talking
about someone older than him who is dying. He uses the word height to rhyme with night, but also
to talk about someone being close to death, being close to

The Causes Of Racial Discrimination In The Rodney King
Los Angeles in the 1990s was plagued by oppression and conflict that thrived in racial divisions.
These divisions created a low level of inter–racial acceptance, especially in the highly segregated
areas of LA. When Rodney King was brutally assaulted by white police officers, the trial became a
symbol of racial tensions throughout the city. Minority groups empathized with King, as they too
had been victims of society's neglect. On April 29, 1992, following the verdict of the jury: not guilty
on all counts, Los Angeles burst into violence. Originating at the intersection of Florence and
Normandie, enrage rioters blocked the roads and attacked drivers unable to flee. By the next day,
fires were widespread throughout the city, and there were many casualties and hundreds injured.
Police forces were far overwhelmed so many Koreans storeowners took up arms to defend their
shops from looting and destruction by predominately Blacks rioters. By the third day, the military
brought the riots under control, which had left a toll of 60 deaths, 2,000 people injured, and billions
of dollars in property damage, 40% of which was to Korean–own. Although the violence between
Koreans and Blacks was sparked by the Rodney King trial, the strife was primarily fueled by
preexisting racial tensions. The media's nature of embellishment and tendency to stereotype
promoted racial prejudices. Many Blacks in 1990s Los Angeles saw the media as biased towards
Whites, thus they lacked a media network that

Although William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire

quite similar to one another. Primarily, both works have a similar story structure, with narration by a
variety of different characters. Additionally, both works are set in a fictional place similar to actual
places, both works contain similar values and themes, and both works contain a variety of different
characters with similar and varying agendas and morality issues. I will first discuss the primary

Not only do they receive the most prejudice from other characters in each of their respective stories,
they are deemed the outcast of their families, and they also seem to be the most genuine member of
their greedy family. Tyrion receives a lot of criticism because he is a dwarf in a very noble house,
which has a reputation as being greedy and overly ambitious, and coincidentally, his mother died
giving birth to him, so majority of his family resents him. However, this hate towards Tyrion does
not stop him from being a so called good guy. He does a lot of heroic things, things that other
characters would not expect the "Imp" to do, such as stand up to the cruel King Jofferey, when King
Jofferey is tormenting his future wife Sansa Stark, because her brother Rob declared for
independence from the Iron Throne. Tyrion also leads the defense of Kings Landing from Stannis
Baratheon, because King Jofferey is too much of a coward to lead his own men in battle. Jewel also
receives a lot of criticism because he is seen as hostile and selfish from other characters, but he
commits some very unselfish acts, such as looking for Cash's tools in the raging river, and nearly
getting in a fight with someone in Jefferson because they were giving his family weird looks. He
also seems to be one of the few members of the family whose only motive for reaching Jefferson,

When I heard about the band, "Artic Rush," on their tour called, "Freeze the World," I was

extraordinary price of only $75! That is outrageously cheap for the quality of the show. The lead
singer, Jimmy Buffet has an amazing voice with multiple personalities shown in the different songs.

The great thing was there was snow in June! That created an amazing experience that will certainly

memorable part to me was when Wiz Khalifa "froze" the crowd with his outstanding guitar solo.
The next song entitled, "Icy Roads," was a song that Jimmy Buffet really sung his heart out. It was a
slower song than, "A Touch of Ice," with a whole different, smooth style. Lasers, lasers, lasers!
While the song went on, there was an eye grabbing laser show! The crowd would see lasers of all
colors, glistening across the arena! Unfortunately, during the show, one of the speakers died,
"freezing" all action. That was the only disappointing thing to me, and if they make sure that doesn't
happen again, the show will be perfect! After the show Drake told reporters, "I feel like we played
our hearts out on the stage. There are still people who deserve just as much praise as we do and they
are the people backstage. They make sure the effects and everything are perfect for us to

Short Story : ' A Song Of Ice And Fire '
Anxious attachment style Lysa Arryn from the novel "A Song of Ice and Fire" (Martin, 1996, 2000)
Jealousy: Lysa was romantically interested in Petyr Baelish, however, Petyr constantly ignored Lysa
and was romantically interested in Catelyn Stark who was Lysa's sister (Martin, 1996).
Consequently, Lysa became extremely jealous of Catelyn for stealing Petyr away from her (Martin,
2000). Lysa's jealousy reached a climax when she became jealous of Sansa Stark who inherited
many physical features of Catelyn (Martin, 2000). Jealousy was a quintessential trait exhibited by
individuals with anxious attachment style which was highlighted by Hazan and Shaver in their
research on attachments (Hazan & Shaver, 1987). Marshall, Bejanyan, Di Castro and Lee (2012)
also found that individuals with anxious attachment styles were more prone to exhibit their feelings
of jealousy on the internet (Marshall, Bejanyan, Di Castro, & Lee, 2012). Lysa's jealousy towards
Catelyn for stealing her romantic interest could be perceived as a convincing example to consider
Lysa as an individual with an anxious attachment style. Need for physical proximity: Another key
attachment figure for Lysa was her son, Robin Arryn. Lysa kept Robin constantly by her side and
constantly breastfed Robin even though he was well past the appropriate age for breast feeding
(Martin, 1996). In particular, Lysa's need to ensure physical proximity with Robin was highlighted
during Tyrion Lannister's trial in the Vale,

There have always been Targaryens who dreamed of things to come, since long before the

for Areys his paranoia caused his vision to be true. Prince Rhagar vision's was on the long night,

Coincidently, one could dragon dream to found or confirm the identity of the third head of the

Informative Essay
African Poem Informative Essay "In your ears my song is motor car misfiring stopping with a
choking cough" (Okara 19). This quote is from the first line of the poem "You Laughed and
Laughed and Laughed" by Gabriel Okara. Gabriel Okara is a famous author who spent the majority
of his life in Nigeria. During that time there were many cultural differences between people in
Africa versus people in other parts of the world. In the poem, Okara addresses the reader as a selfish
person who is unwilling to listen to what he has to say about his African culture. Through contrast,
metaphors, and tone Okara expresses the fact that people from other cultures aren't always
welcoming towards African culture. The first important literary device that Okara uses to convey the
theme of the poem is metaphors. Metaphors play a major role in the development of Okara's
message; some people refuse to listen to information about African culture, by making specific
comparisons that help the reader better understand the poem. To Okara, the reader seems to listen to
him as if he were a "motor car misfiring" (Okara 19). This suggests that the reader doesn't care
about what Okara has to say nor does the reader pay much attention to him. The second metaphor
that Okara chooses to use is a comparison between the reader's laugh and ice. By comparing the
reader's laugh to "ice–block laughter" Okara is making a connection to how harsh their laugh is to
the bitterness of the cold (Okara 19). The

Examples Of Honor In A Song Of Ice And Fire By G. R Martins
Honor consists largely in the obligations we have to the groups to which we belong. As such, it is a
concept that is designed to tie individuals to one another. It binds people together, yet it can tear
others apart. I have always thought if honor is the same as loyatly. I know that they are closely
intertwined, but are they the same? I thought of a character from G.R martins' novel series, a song of
ice and fire, Jaime Lannister. Martin distinguishes honor and loyatly through Jamie Lannister, a
knight sworn to protect the king. What is honorable is not necessarily the 'right' thing to do. Prior to
the events detailed in the books, Jaime takes an oath to defend the Kingm Aerys Targaryen II. But
when the King learns that a major battle

Little Dragon Analyse
There are a ton of songs that could fit the theme of the HBO hit series, Game of Thrones, depending
on your perspective. Thus, it was hard to narrow this list down to ten more songs, but I hope fans of
the show will like my choices. Here is part two of my unofficial soundtrack for the show (for part
one, click here.) Also, there are possible spoilers ahead (but nothing too major.) Number Ten:
"Feather" by Little Dragon. "Feather" is a song by Little Dragon, off of her 2009 album, Machine
Dreams. The song begins, "rather be a bandit than a lover / rather be a man with the other / to run
the mountain down, run it down / rather be a whisper in heaven / than a daughter locked in your
prison / so run the mountain down, run it down." The song continues, "grip the crown like a winner /
pretending like a beginner." The chorus goes, "you are airborne / you've got silver rays / will it ever
float, will it ever soar along." Supposedly this song is centered on the psychology–based idea that

The first verse goes, "old man lying by the side of the road / with the lorries rolling by / blue moon
sinking from the weight of the load / and the buildings scrape the sky / cold wind ripping down the

daylight in his eyes." Some lines from the second verse include, "blind man running through the
light of the night / with an answer in his hand / come on down to the river of sight / and you can
really understand." And, of course, the chorus goes, "don't let it bring you down / it's only castles
burning / find someone who's turning / and you will come around." In essence, no matter how
desolate and desperate times may be, and no matter how many times the throne is overturned and
families are torn apart, the redemptive characters in the show need to remember that there's still

The Cedar Bend Trip Essay Essay
When I heard about the Cedar Bend trip, the first thought that came into my mind was that I have to
avoid this trip. I tried a lot of things to get away from this trip, but every person. But now I think
about i wish i can go again. All the activities, songs, scary stories. Everything we did would be
memorable forever. The bus ride, cutting the chickens, makesulters, ice cream ,to say goodbye to
cedar bend. I talked to said it is required and you will love it. I then started thinking about the trip
and reading the description about Cedar Bend. Now I am so glad I went and didn't back out. I never
had experience camping, being in the woods, or learning how to survive. I believe going to cedar
bend was one of the best decision I made.
On the way to Cedar Bend I wasn't that excited . I was nervous and card to the whole trip. How will
the people be, how will everyone react. I had a lot of different stories from friends good and bad.
Some Said the food doesn 't taste good. The dogs are not friendly, the place where we stay is
comfortable. But going there I realized everything was wrong. It depends on the person point of
view and how their comfort level stand. Some people appetize the hard work of everyone and how
welcome everyone was.
I learned that I can adapt to any environment or situation if I have support from my friends. I was
very scared, even uncomfortable at first. I wondered if I would be able to fit in with my core group?

Smash Mouth: Song Analysis
For example, Smash Mouth writes,"i ain't the sharpest tool in shed/ She was looking kind was
looking kind of dumb with her finger in her thumb."(Smash Mouth) This lyric describes the singer's
personality. He might not be the smartest person and people might judge him, but The singer is
smart enough to make his own decisions. This is a great example of a hypole. Another examples of
literary devices in the song is,"Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running."(Smash Mouth) This
lyric is an example of personification. It's personification because it's giving human traits to the

Disabled In The Game Of Thrones Stereotypes
The Disabled in the Game of Thrones "Bringing Elsewhere Home: A Song of Ice and Fire's Ethics
of Disability" by Pascal J. Massie and Lauryn S. Mayer focuses on the disabled in the popular book
and tv series Game of Thrones. Season one episode 4 of the Game of Thrones titled, "Cripples,
Bastards and Broken Things", features several characters that suffer from either an internal or
external disability. However, the primary two examples of disabled characters are Bran Stark and
Tyrion Lannister. Both characters suffer from very different disabilities, and unfortunately they live
in a pseudo–medieval society in which disabilities are highly frowned upon. Their social status in
society is highly afflicted by their handicaps, but they are also lucky that they are from noble houses
that help elevate their status. Both characters have and develop different ways to deal with their
handicap. Bran Stark, is bed ridden after suffering a horrible fall from a tower that caused him to be
paralyzed from the waist down. Although not shown in this episode, Bran was pushed from the
tower due to the fact that he had seen something he was not meant to see. Bran is crushed by his
disability at first, it makes him feel quite useless as he has to get carried around from place to place.
Furthermore it greatly hinders his childhood dream of becoming a noble warrior and prevents him
from climbing, which is one of his greatest passions. Bran first sees his newfound disability as a
setback but

Use Of Alliteration In The Raven By Edgar Allen Poe
1. Alliteration: A word that follows another word with the same consonant sounds is alliteration.
Alliteration is used quite often in poetry as it helps create a certain tone or mood for a poem. Words
that use alliteration are effective as it uses sound to bring focus to specific parts of a poem that are
vital in making an idea or an emotion known. The use of alliteration is very clever as it is a simple
trick authors use to grab a reader's attention and help readers understand what they are trying to say.
Edgar Allen Poe uses alliteration quite often in his poem "The Raven" to create a somber and
ominous mood. Poe uses phrases like "weak and weary" and "doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal
ever dared to dream before" to emphasize the darkness of the poem. The alliteration used also gives
readers a sense that nothing good will come at the end of "The Raven" as the phrases that use
alliteration are dreary and unwelcoming.
2. Imagery: A descriptive word that creates a vivid image in one's mind is imagery. Imagery is used
in all different forms of literature like short stories, dramas, and poems. Words or phrases that use
imagery can describe the senses such as sight, taste, or even smell. Poets use imagery in their poems
as it helps readers connect to the poem. Readers can create their own personal images and pictures
in their head with the assistance of imagery. Imagery also has readers look at and analyze poems
through their own individual experiences with the imagery used. Imagery can also set the mood for
a poem. If words like "sunny" or "soft" are used in a poem they'd set a happy mood, but if words
like "rainy" or "foggy" are used they'd set a sad mood. "The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock" by
T.S. Eliot uses plenty of imagery to give readers insight as to what exactly the speaker sees and
feels. The speaker in the poem takes what seems to be the woman he loves on a walk through, what
he describes, "streets that follow like a tedious argument/ of insidious intent" (Eliot 759). The
imagery that the speaker uses to describe the street is strange because instead of taking the woman
he loves through a romantic and nice street, he describes the street as an argument, which is
something that can be annoying,

Alexis De Tocqueville's Influence On American Culture
The French political scientist, Alexis de Tocqueville outlines the effects that mass democracy has on
the art produced in the United States, specifically in volume 2 part 1 of Democracy in America. Art
in America tends to have a lack of identity, made in quantity not for quality, and when not overly
simplistic, was overly bombastic. While the United States has carved itself an identity and a place in
the culture of the world, the issues Tocqueville draws to light are still prevalent in contemporary fine
art. The best possible example of modern art that illuminates these issues described is the collection
of novels and the film counterpart, A Song of Ice and Fire by American author, George R. R. Martin.
The United States stands as an example of a sovereignty with a flourishing democracy and stands as
an economic powerhouse. The countries' quick rise to prominence can be attributed to the success of
its industrial era. The mix of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This lack of individuality trickles down into many facets of American life, especially art. A young
nation during Tocqueville's visit, the America had yet to establish its own identity artistically.
Americans seemed to prefer the useful over the beautiful. The countries' close ties to Europe,
particularly Britain, lead to a dependence on their literature instead of American made works.
Tocqueville points out that "almost all great English works are reproduced in the United States. The
literary genius of Great Britain still casts its rays deep in the forests of the New World" (Tocqueville
445). In Chapter 13 volume 2 part 1 of Democracy in America, Tocqueville goes as far as to
discredit American authors, saying "the only real authors I recognize as Americans are journalists"
(Tocqueville 446). He concedes that even though the United States lacked a distinct artistic identity,
in time he believed one would arise that would be much different from what he had

Song Analysis: We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel Essay
Every song has a story to tell, and some contain hidden stories or lessons, while others are
completely blatant. In Billy Joel's song, "We Didn't Start the Fire," he does not hesitate to be very
obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one
large fire. I chose to remediate Joel's song because it spoke to me with historical context. When
researching the song, I read a majority of the history behind it and decided to reflect upon it in a
visual picture collage, combining a majority of the elements he mentions with pictures––all circled
around a fire in the middle. I decided to also make red–dyed cupcakes reflecting the fire Joel speaks
of and ice them with a flame, yet placing an X over it, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not all collages involve all of those elements, but any one of those can be used by itself. I found "by
adding a 'collage' an artist can change the nature of what he or she is creating, providing a new
dimension for a work of art" (Stern 1).
A collage, in my opinion, is a great way to grasp the concept of Joel's song. Collages allow the
viewer to see the art from a different point of view, and "seeing" a song can help the person to
actually see what Joel was trying to prove. In this project, I used pictures of almost every historical
perspective he mentioned in his song, and circled all of those elements around a picture of a flame
in the middle. I chose to do this because the flame is the ultimate theme of the song, and all of the
events and people he is singing about contribute to the large fire that begins to grow due to all of
these events combined. Along with placing the flame in the center, I matted it on an orange paper,
unlike any of the other pictures, to help it stand out, since it is the main theme of the song. For those
who have a difficult time learning without pictures, this is a great way for them to see all of the
aspects of Joel's song together on one page. As well as making a collage, I also made cupcakes to

Music Of The West Coast
1986, the west coast was heading towards a new era of violence, gangs, racism, and music. By 1990
California would become a center of U.S. culture, controversy and the birth of a new American
culture. Music groups such as Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, and Public Enemy, were just a few
of the cultural icons to influence music. But no group impacted music such as Compton rap group,
N.W.A. N.W.A. brought a new culture to music and made not only white people, but the whole
country aware of what went on in neighborhoods of lesser fortune. Their music sent shockwaves
across the country, so large that the F.B.I. was in contact with the infamous group. The three main
players of the group were its founder Eazy–E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. N.W.A., often considered the

others. N.W.A. also still represents all the issues that America still deals with, mainly in police
brutality. The group even influenced fashion. N.W.A. may not have been well received during their
time, but it is well known how important they are to music and society in many different aspects.
Even as individuals, the three main players all had an integral role in music today as well as society.

idea, because it shows that the two contrast, and making the audience know that they go well

All Star Shrek Analysis
All Star by Smash Mouth, released in 1999 has received a lot of praise in various communities,
especially since its inclusion in the movie Shrek. While a first listen through All Star by Smash
Mouth may lead one to believe the song is meant to be a driving inspirational piece to reach for
one's dreams and go be a celebrity, it is important to consider the characterization of the speaker and
the way he frames his arguments in the song. The true intention of this song can only be realized
once one analyzes the logic used and considers how it applies to the argument. All Star by Smash
Mouth characterizes a speaker who uses flawed logic, negative emotions, and irony to happily
present a lifestyle which is clearly detrimental to effectively display the absurdity of hedonism,
materialism, and idolization. The speaker characterizes himself from the start as being dumb,
establishing him as an unreliable source for the listener. The listener is immediately told, "I ain't the
sharpest tool in the shed" ("All Star"). This suggests the ignorance of the narrator, which contributes
to his inability to form a cohesive argument. He doesn't understand fully how the world works and
therefore, as he claims others have told him, "the world is gonna roll" over him ("All Star"). Once
one understands this, one can start taking his words for more than its face–value. The speaker also
presents himself as someone who doesn't care about the rules, which the artist hopes will help turn

"Even though the adults refrain from lamenting their sufferings directly to the children and telling
them about the darkness, the child–narrator still intimates its marks in their faces and responds with
fear. These haunting marks of darkness hail the child into the black community at a pre–cognitive,
affective level that precedes the child's grasp of this darkness in its narrative form: he feels the

Summary Of The Book Series 'A Song Of Ice And Fire'

Pawns and Kings
Introduction: In the book series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, published in 1998
and is still unfinished up to this writing, the power struggles to get the iron throne between many
characters are portrayed. The desire of many nobles to rule Westeros turned in a war between self–
crowned kings while on the other side of the Narrow Sea is the last surviving person of an old
family that used to rule before the rebellion planning to claim the iron throne for her own and for the
revenge of the usurpers.
The government of Westeros, shown by the powerful looking iron throne which serves to intimidate
anyone who enters court with its build of swords made from those who are killed by Aegon the
Conqueror, is one of the most detailed and historical monarchies in the realm of fiction. It shows a

Current Westeros and Medieval Europe A. The Political System
The style of Westerosi government shows both influence of an absolute monarchy and a limited
monarchy depending on the current ruler. At the start of the book, A Game of Thrones (Martin,
1996), it was said by Renly Baratheon "If we wait for my brother to grace us with his royal
presence, it could be a long sit." The current king at that time, Robert Baratheon, leaves his duties to
his small council.
The small council is composed of The King's Hand, master of laws, master of coins, master of ships,
master of whispers, and the grand maester. Like any other monarchies, the executive, judicial, and
legislative works fall to the crown however, in Westeros, the small council helps in administering
those three branches. The King's Hand, however, is the second most powerful man in the small
council, he is in charge of all those three branches when there is no king to be seen around. As the
quote says "What the king dreams, the Hand builds" (Martin,

Similarities Between A Song Of Ice And Fire
A lot of the character development and events that take place in A Song of Ice and Fire happen
because of one large word we call "love", and whether that be in terms of a brother, child, or partner
it can make us do some pretty crazy things. A time in particular that represents this is when Bran is
climbing around Winterfell and he catches brother and sister Jaime and Cersei Lannister having
intercourse. Jaime proceeds to push Bran off of the window sill in an attempt to kill him, but instead
grants Bran immobilization and amnesia of the events that caused his fall. After Jaime shoves Bran
he recites a cliche line "The things I do for love." I think through this quote and the other events that

A Song Of Fire And Ice Analysis
A Song of Fire and Ice "A Clash of Kings," is the second installment to the "A Song of Fire and
Ice," series. The author, George R. R. Martin has written a total of seven books in this series. Martin
has expressed feelings and similar situations to the audience, using a variety of characters. The
characters' help preserve the reader's commitment to the books, and wish for the series to never end.
Unfortunately, we all know that he won't be able to keep writing the series, but are grateful to be
able to read and relate with the characters within the story. In addition to the first book of Game of
Thrones, we experienced the hardships of the other houses, trying to get the Iron Throne. The first
book in the series, primarily involved the story of King Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark. In the
first book, tragedy struck and carried on into the second book "A Clash of Kings". Except in the
second book, the violence has escalated to a new level and the sufferings the characters have to deal
with. As a matter of fact, the main plot in the book, concerns with the problems of Robb Stark. Robb
Stark is Eddard Stark's oldest son. After tragedy occurred at King's Landing, Robb promised his
people that he will get revenge for his late father. He was determined to make sure that the
Lannister's reign will end and that they will be distant from the Iron Throne. Of course other

Ice And Fire Comparison
In the fantastic novel A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin, every family dream to sit on the
iron throne. From the vicious Lannisters to the cold–blooded Stark, everyone in Westeros cherishes
the moment they will be the king. Over the Great Wall, winter is coming: white walkers, sort of ice
zombies, threaten the peace of the kingdom. In Essos, Daenerys commands and conquers, leading
the Dothraki. Games of Thrones, the publically acclaimed cinematic adaptation of the book, realized
by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is partially faithful to the book. However, some characters have
been sadly changed, the narrative diversity is lost in the series and some plot points negatively
differed from the book.
First of all, many protagonists from the book have been changed or removed for viewing purposes,
creating an undesired change. For example, in the book, Tyrion Lannister, the dwarf, has his nose
chopped after losing it in the Battle of Blackwater . His scarce makes him even scarier, adding it to

is deleted in the cinematic adaptation, which is regrettable, because seeing a mother get the

series, such as the fate of Shireen Baratheon. In the novel, she lived through the story without any

A Brief Comparison of Themes in A Song of Ice and Fire and Hamlet
While the works were created in two completely different genres and time periods, much of the
themes and symbols in George R. R. Martin's high fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire can be
mirrored in Shakespeare's work, namely Hamlet. The motifs of universal mortality, filial duty to
revenge and the deconstruction of idealism can all be observed in the works throughout the story
arcs of the main characters and in the pen and ink drawings on toned paper that was turned in with
this essay. A recurring theme and, to many, the most distinguishing feature of Hamlet and A ... Show

Hamlet's need to avenge his father and the consequent massacre at the dinner table is directly
mirrored in Robb Stark's journey to King's Landing to avenge Eddard's unlawful execution and the
Red Wedding massacre that thusly occurs at The Twins. King Robb and Prince Hamlet, both young
and charismatic leaders on a path to filial revenge, which ended in shambles due to a series of poor
decisions. Hamlet's indecisiveness and honor lead him to stall his plans of regicide, resulting in his
own demise. Similarly, Robb's neglect of his oath to the Freys lead to the massacre at The Twins,
which is reminiscent in its details of Hamlet's death–banquet. Another two separate examples from
both works includes the sloppy attempt at revenge of brothers against those who have abused their
sisters. Laertes' recklessness in his fight with Hamlet to avenge Ophelia's death mirrors Oberyn
Martell's combat with the Mountain in order to avenge his killing of his sister, Elia. Similar to
Laertes, Oberyn acted out of arrogance and tried to squeeze out a confession out of the Mountain.
Sadly, the only thing squeezed out was Oberyn's brain. To add icing to the steak, poisoned weapons
were the culprits of their opponents' deaths in both works. Oberyn managed to get Gregor Clegane

Explain Why Did You Choose This Event In Your Life

  • 1. Explain Why Did You Choose This Event In Your Life Why did you choose this event in your life? I chose this event in my life because it was one of the most stressful parts of my life. Exams were coming in and I had to lose a lot of weight. My grades were horrible and all I worried about was not passing. From all the stress I kept gaining weight which brought my self–esteem down. I had a lot of problems at school with friends and my relationship with my mom was horrible. I would stay up until 3 am I talking to friends, arguing all the time with my mom. The reason this has happened so suddenly in grade 9 is that in grade 8 I was a loser who just wanted to fit in. I wasn't pretty like the other girls, wasn't fit as them, etc. in grade 9 I hoped for a new start to just fit but all hell came ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether it is dealing with their parents' divorce, friends, family, etc. but the hardest part is overcoming it. Many people commit suicides or cut themselves or even start drinking or smoking. I, for instincts, have gone through this but not ever alcohol or drugs as it goes against my religion. Others can absolutely learn from my experience as a motivation to have hope and continue because the little things can mess you up the most and impact your life the most. Don't wait until the last moment to meet your dream. Start slowly and success will chase you. Never give up, the three most important words. Never give up. Explain your choice of music. Include the title of song and artists or group artists. My song of choice is Divenire by Ludovico Einaudi. I have chosen this song as it has been one of my favorite classical pieces of music of all time and one of the greatest piano plays in history. It was also one of the songs in the 2012 London Olympic games and in the P&G–Best Jobs commercial. This song is really motivating and touches the soul within with its beautiful chords and melodies. It's great to calm down and soothe the body before a competition or an exam or test. Explain the design of your PowerPoint or visual display ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Strands Of Red: A Short Story Strands of red disappearing from existence, Calvin witnessed Amos slip from the yeti's life– snatching swipe, and its ensuing thunderous howl rattled the frozen stiff air. Fists flung against the ground, dispersing a crystal storm across its surroundings that played a jarring, fickle–noted song against the ice. The yeti swung its body in a semicircle before stampeding towards Calvin, its currant–stained, sawtooth teeth festering for a single tear at his flesh. And claws click–clacked at a spine–chilling speed while screeching across the field like nails on a chalkboard. Calvin remained hunched in place, scowling, crushing the snow within his hands, his gaze darting back–and–forth between the two rampaging monstrosities. In seconds, white ... • 3. A Song Of Ice And Fire: George R. Martin The expert I chose is George R.R. Martin. Martin is a writer most famous for his "A Song of Ice and Fire" medieval fantasy novels; the series that the popular "Game of Thrones" show is adapted from. He began writing comic books, and many of his early books did not generate the massive adoration that his magnum opus has. In addition to writing books and comics he was also a long–time writer for the show "The Twilight Zone". Gaining experience in multiple domains has helped him shape his skills and develop his own unique writing style. He is now a senior citizen who has been writing for several decades. From fans as well as professional critics Martin has received a plethora of feedback on his work helping him understand what he has done ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. George R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire Strictly speaking, I understand with great deal "the snuffy" reaction spreading about concerning George R. R Martin's somewhat infinitely delayed next instalment of the legendary "A Song of Ice and Fire" that was originally set to be released sometime this year. For fans this inevitably means even greater diversion between their two favorite disputes: the novel and HBO's GOT, which is why the phrase "understand with great deal" was chosen specifically to capture the culture of followers reaction to Mr. Martin's public announcement that the book was not yet finished. As a fan, I am no stranger to long, deeply engrained hours of caring perhaps "too much" about the infinite realms of fiction that have legitimized my Fangirl resume thus far–and of course, this type of loyalty often merits emotional response. Some people choose to paint their faces and throw beer bottles at their screen when their respective football teams lose! I choose similarly to be enmeshed in the universe of Game of Thrones and genera ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather you care to believe it, there are simply seasons for writers when our hands and brain align to perform cosmic masterpieces! Conversely, this is often followed by seasons when every damn word comes out with the momentum of tar, until your hands cannot front the weight of one more, dispassionate syllable. We are often labeled as self–serving, pretentious beings who spend more time concerned with our own thoughts, opinions in the mirror of self–loathing–than any other artistic expression combined! And to some extent, clichés aside: this has to be true to write anything worth reading–for you fan–lot. The hours writers spend in the throes of whatever universe is propelling their pen, is the stuff we fans revel about in. With that being said that connection with ourselves cannot be broken–a when it is, it is impossible to write... ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Games Of Thrones By George R.r Introduction The Games of Thrones is a 1st book in 'A song of Ice and Fire'. It is a fantastic adaptation of George R.R. Martin. The story of The Games of Thrones is original , multi–layered with lots of sub plots, and is non –formulaic. It is incredibly exciting ,joyful, suspenseful ,mysterious, and very unpredictable and there is no way for you to know what is going to happen in this novel. The story is also very violent . The characters are well developed and enjoyable whereas some characters are even clever and secretive. Unlike most fantasy books, Martin's characters are not totally good or evil. His characters are also very personable so we can think of them as real people and can develop strong emotions towards them throughout the novel. Many of the characters in the novel The Games of Thrones are killed off and new ones appear throughout the novel. The title sequence consists of a three–dimensional map of the world, which includes the continents of Westeros and Essos, located on the inner surface of a sphere. At the center of the sphere is a light source, a sun surrounded by an astrolabe–like arrangement of rotating rings. The Game of Thrones is set in the SevenKingdoms of Westeros of Medieval Europe. Here in the novel The Games of Thrones we see that brothers plots against each other. • 6. A Song Of Ice And Fire Analysis A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of books written by George R.R. Martin that is set in a fantasy world with medieval style combat and politics. Several characters in this series are inspired by individuals that were involved in an English war during the medieval era. A major source of inspiration for George R.R. Martin was the Wars of the Roses, which occurred in England from 1455 to 1487, and this helped him create several of his main characters including: Tyrion Lannister, Joffrey Baratheon, and Cersei Lannister. George R.R. Martin took inspiration from kings and queens from the Wars of the Roses and the period before the war. Martin used their personalities to create appropriate characters in his books. Margaret often ruled the kingdom from behind her husband and involved herself with the struggles of dealing with a rebellion. Margaret was also known for spending large amounts of money to treat herself and exert her influence on everyone around her. Cersei Lannister married Robert Baratheon at the age of 17 and became the queen of Westeros. Cersei's reign as queen lasted for 15 years and she eventually became queen regent when Robert died and Joffrey was taking the throne. Cersei is described as being a very cunning and manipulative character throughout the series. These attributes help her maintain a high level of power when Joffrey becomes king. "If I accept you, you shall be the King's Hand in name, but my Hand in truth. You will share all your plans and intentions with me before you act, and you will do nothing without my consent." (A Clash of Kings 67). This quote shows Cersei talking to Tyrion and asserting her power by demanding that Tyrion communicate all of his plans to her. "With its aid she could reward her friends by gifts of cash, presents of jewels and other favours, and overawe her foes by the extent of her power." (Myers 155). Martin uses his animalistic tendencies and relates it to the human nature in his series: 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. A song of ice and fire is a series of novels by the American novelist and screenwriter, George R. R. Martin. The first volume of the series, a game of thrones, was begun in 1991 and first published in 1996. Tyrion is a dwarf born to Lord Tyrian Lannister, of the House of Lannister, which is comparable to the modern day Rockefeller family. Tyrion, was hated by his father and his sister and is referred to as "the monster who killed his mother." His father could never accept his dwarfism and was treated like a second class person, with limited rights only because he carried the Lannister name. • 9. Similarities Between Othello And Robb Hawk The Young Wolf and the Barbary Horse: A Comparison of Robb Stark and Othello Since the very beginnings of literature authors have borrowed from each other. One of the most copied authors is William Shakespeare. Modern fantasy author George R.R. Martin is among the names of those who are inspired by Shakespeare. In Martin's epic saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, many characters share similarities with others in the works of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Othello and Martin's Robb Stark are two of each respective author's most identifiable characters. Othello: a fearless warrior who is unmade by his actions off of the battlefield. Robb Stark: a leader of an undefeated military force who is murdered for breaking a promise. Both Othello and Robb Stark share common traits and each man can trace his downfall to one thing: vulnerability to manipulation. Othello claims his shortcomings in the beginning of the play, stating, "Rude am I in my speech,/ And little blessed with the soft phrase of peace" (1.3.80–81). • 10. Dylan Thomas 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night' The word musical is a synonym for the word rhyme, and for good reason. Subconciously we are able to remember the song lyrics to a favorite song, but not often to a poem without rhyme. The poems Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, Sympathy by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas all use rhyme to make the poem more musical because when a poem is more melodic it is easier to connect to the emotions poem. The poem Fire and Ice is about destruction, and the inevitable end of the world. Robert Frost's rhyming writing in the poem helps you connect more to the speaker and understand what he is saying when he is talking about fire and ice, and it helps you picture the destruction and end of the world. The poem says, "From what I've tasted of desire/ I hold with those who favor fire" (3–4). In this line, the emotion desire is connected to fire. Almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He describesthe setting of the sun, or the "dying of the light" to represent the light going out in ones life. These rhyming lines make the poem easier to comprehend. "And you, my father, there on the sad height/ Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray/ Do not go gentle into that good night/ Rage, rage against the dying of the light" (15–19). • 11. The Causes Of Racial Discrimination In The Rodney King Los Angeles in the 1990s was plagued by oppression and conflict that thrived in racial divisions. These divisions created a low level of inter–racial acceptance, especially in the highly segregated areas of LA. When Rodney King was brutally assaulted by white police officers, the trial became a symbol of racial tensions throughout the city. Minority groups empathized with King, as they too had been victims of society's neglect. On April 29, 1992, following the verdict of the jury: not guilty on all counts, Los Angeles burst into violence. Originating at the intersection of Florence and Normandie, enrage rioters blocked the roads and attacked drivers unable to flee. By the next day, fires were widespread throughout the city, and there were many casualties and hundreds injured. Police forces were far overwhelmed so many Koreans storeowners took up arms to defend their shops from looting and destruction by predominately Blacks rioters. By the third day, the military brought the riots under control, which had left a toll of 60 deaths, 2,000 people injured, and billions of dollars in property damage, 40% of which was to Korean–own. Although the violence between Koreans and Blacks was sparked by the Rodney King trial, the strife was primarily fueled by preexisting racial tensions. The media's nature of embellishment and tendency to stereotype promoted racial prejudices. Many Blacks in 1990s Los Angeles saw the media as biased towards Whites, thus they lacked a media network that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Additionally, both works are set in a fictional place similar to actual places, both works contain similar values and themes, and both works contain a variety of different characters with similar and varying agendas and morality issues. • 15. Short Story : ' A Song Of Ice And Fire ' Anxious attachment style Lysa Arryn from the novel "A Song of Ice and Fire" (Martin, 1996, 2000) Jealousy: Lysa was romantically interested in Petyr Baelish, however, Petyr constantly ignored Lysa and was romantically interested in Catelyn Stark who was Lysa's sister (Martin, 1996). Consequently, Lysa became extremely jealous of Catelyn for stealing Petyr away from her (Martin, 2000). Lysa's jealousy reached a climax when she became jealous of Sansa Stark who inherited many physical features of Catelyn (Martin, 2000). Jealousy was a quintessential trait exhibited by individuals with anxious attachment style which was highlighted by Hazan and Shaver in their research on attachments (Hazan & Shaver, 1987). Marshall, Bejanyan, Di Castro and Lee (2012) also found that individuals with anxious attachment styles were more prone to exhibit their feelings of jealousy on the internet (Marshall, Bejanyan, Di Castro, & Lee, 2012). Lysa's jealousy towards Catelyn for stealing her romantic interest could be perceived as a convincing example to consider Lysa as an individual with an anxious attachment style. Need for physical proximity: Another key attachment figure for Lysa was her son, Robin Arryn. Lysa kept Robin constantly by her side and constantly breastfed Robin even though he was well past the appropriate age for breast feeding (Martin, 1996). • 18. Informative Essay African Poem Informative Essay "In your ears my song is motor car misfiring stopping with a choking cough" (Okara 19). This quote is from the first line of the poem "You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed" by Gabriel Okara. Gabriel Okara is a famous author who spent the majority of his life in Nigeria. During that time there were many cultural differences between people in Africa versus people in other parts of the world. In the poem, Okara addresses the reader as a selfish person who is unwilling to listen to what he has to say about his African culture. Through contrast, metaphors, and tone Okara expresses the fact that people from other cultures aren't always welcoming towards African culture. The first important literary device that Okara uses to convey the theme of the poem is metaphors. Metaphors play a major role in the development of Okara's message; some people refuse to listen to information about African culture, by making specific comparisons that help the reader better understand the poem. To Okara, the reader seems to listen to him as if he were a "motor car misfiring" (Okara 19). This suggests that the reader doesn't care about what Okara has to say nor does the reader pay much attention to him. The second metaphor that Okara chooses to use is a comparison between the reader's laugh and ice. By comparing the reader's laugh to "ice–block laughter" Okara is making a connection to how harsh their laugh is to the bitterness of the cold (Okara 19). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Use Of Alliteration In The Raven By Edgar Allen Poe 1. Alliteration: A word that follows another word with the same consonant sounds is alliteration. Alliteration is used quite often in poetry as it helps create a certain tone or mood for a poem. Words that use alliteration are effective as it uses sound to bring focus to specific parts of a poem that are vital in making an idea or an emotion known. The use of alliteration is very clever as it is a simple trick authors use to grab a reader's attention and help readers understand what they are trying to say. Edgar Allen Poe uses alliteration quite often in his poem "The Raven" to create a somber and ominous mood. Poe uses phrases like "weak and weary" and "doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before" to emphasize the darkness of the poem. The alliteration used also gives readers a sense that nothing good will come at the end of "The Raven" as the phrases that use alliteration are dreary and unwelcoming. 2. Imagery: A descriptive word that creates a vivid image in one's mind is imagery. Imagery is used in all different forms of literature like short stories, dramas, and poems. Words or phrases that use imagery can describe the senses such as sight, taste, or even smell. Poets use imagery in their poems as it helps readers connect to the poem. Readers can create their own personal images and pictures in their head with the assistance of imagery. Imagery also has readers look at and analyze poems through their own individual experiences with the imagery used. Imagery can also set the mood for a poem. If words like "sunny" or "soft" are used in a poem they'd set a happy mood, but if words like "rainy" or "foggy" are used they'd set a sad mood. "The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot uses plenty of imagery to give readers insight as to what exactly the speaker sees and feels. The speaker in the poem takes what seems to be the woman he loves on a walk through, what he describes, "streets that follow like a tedious argument/ of insidious intent" (Eliot 759). The imagery that the speaker uses to describe the street is strange because instead of taking the woman he loves through a romantic and nice street, he describes the street as an argument, which is something that can be annoying, ... • 27. Alexis De Tocqueville's Influence On American Culture The French political scientist, Alexis de Tocqueville outlines the effects that mass democracy has on the art produced in the United States, specifically in volume 2 part 1 of Democracy in America. Art in America tends to have a lack of identity, made in quantity not for quality, and when not overly simplistic, was overly bombastic. While the United States has carved itself an identity and a place in the culture of the world, the issues Tocqueville draws to light are still prevalent in contemporary fine art. The best possible example of modern art that illuminates these issues described is the collection of novels and the film counterpart, A Song of Ice and Fire by American author, George R. R. Martin. In Billy Joel's song, "We Didn't Start the Fire," he does not hesitate to be very obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one large fire. Not all collages involve all of those elements, but any one of those can be used by itself. I found "by adding a 'collage' an artist can change the nature of what he or she is creating, providing a new dimension for a work of art" (Stern 1). A collage, in my opinion, is a great way to grasp the concept of Joel's song. Collages allow the viewer to see the art from a different point of view, and "seeing" a song can help the person to actually see what Joel was trying to prove. In this project, I used pictures of almost every historical perspective he mentioned in his song, and circled all of those elements around a picture of a flame in the middle. I chose to do this because the flame is the ultimate theme of the song, and all of the events and people he is singing about contribute to the large fire that begins to grow due to all of these events combined. Along with placing the flame in the center, I matted it on an orange paper, unlike any of the other pictures, to help it stand out, since it is the main theme of the song. The sky is cloudy and the breeze starts to pick up. The seawater starts to tingle on my skin, however the waves start to become quieter than before. The white soft sand starts to stick to me, as I lay down in the warm sun. The faint smell of barbecuing meat, from the nearby shops, starts to fade. The taste of cold ice cream lingers in my mouth, as I sit up in the shade. The warm sun becomes a golden glowing semi–circle over the sea, however the stars to start to glow in the purple sky. • 33. All Star Shrek Analysis All Star by Smash Mouth, released in 1999 has received a lot of praise in various communities, especially since its inclusion in the movie Shrek. While a first listen through All Star by Smash Mouth may lead one to believe the song is meant to be a driving inspirational piece to reach for one's dreams and go be a celebrity, it is important to consider the characterization of the speaker and the way he frames his arguments in the song. The true intention of this song can only be realized once one analyzes the logic used and considers how it applies to the argument. All Star by Smash Mouth characterizes a speaker who uses flawed logic, negative emotions, and irony to happily present a lifestyle which is clearly detrimental to effectively display the absurdity of hedonism, materialism, and idolization. The speaker characterizes himself from the start as being dumb, establishing him as an unreliable source for the listener. The listener is immediately told, "I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed" ("All Star"). This suggests the ignorance of the narrator, which contributes to his inability to form a cohesive argument. He doesn't understand fully how the world works and therefore, as he claims others have told him, "the world is gonna roll" over him ("All Star"). Once one understands this, one can start taking his words for more than its face–value. The speaker also presents himself as someone who doesn't care about the rules, which the artist hopes will help turn the listener ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Analysis Of James Baldwin 's ' Sonny 's Blues ' Essay ntroduction: James Baldwin, author of Sonny 's Blues, once said, "I grew up with music...much more than with any other language. In a way, the music I grew up with saved my life" ("Session 3 Inquiry: Rudolfo Anaya and James Baldwin," 2015). Blues becomes Sonny 's "drug" and his addiction to it his salvation. "Even though the adults refrain from lamenting their sufferings directly to the children and telling them about the darkness, the child–narrator still intimates its marks in their faces and responds with fear. These haunting marks of darkness hail the child into the black community at a pre–cognitive, affective level that precedes the child's grasp of this darkness in its narrative form: he feels the inevitable suffering before he knows what it is. At a distinct moment in the flashback, the child– narrator internalizes the darkness" (Claborn, p92 2010). These words are dark, but as you will see soon, so is the world of Sonny 's chosen art form of music. Symbolic ice that began the story and from the very beginning music plays a important role in the story often defining the characters or their personalities, as well as the culture of Harlem itself. "Sonny's Blues" is the story of a young man who decides early on that he wants to be a musician. Sonny 's brother does not want him to be a musician, but Sonny persists and he is influenced by the jazz musicians of that time, including greats like: Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie who each had their own distinct ... • 35. Summary Of The Book Series 'A Song Of Ice And Fire' AYALA, Angely, D. 1LIT1 Pawns and Kings Introduction: In the book series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, published in 1998 and is still unfinished up to this writing, the power struggles to get the iron throne between many characters are portrayed. The desire of many nobles to rule Westeros turned in a war between self– crowned kings while on the other side of the Narrow Sea is the last surviving person of an old family that used to rule before the rebellion planning to claim the iron throne for her own and for the revenge of the usurpers. The government of Westeros, shown by the powerful looking iron throne which serves to intimidate anyone who enters court with its build of swords made from those who are killed by Aegon the Conqueror, is one of the most detailed and historical monarchies in the realm of fiction. It shows a realistic side of medieval political power through fiction. Each of the various movements of the nobles has an effect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Current Westeros and Medieval Europe A. The Political System The style of Westerosi government shows both influence of an absolute monarchy and a limited monarchy depending on the current ruler. At the start of the book, A Game of Thrones (Martin, 1996), it was said by Renly Baratheon "If we wait for my brother to grace us with his royal presence, it could be a long sit." The current king at that time, Robert Baratheon, leaves his duties to his small council. The small council is composed of The King's Hand, master of laws, master of coins, master of ships, master of whispers, and the grand maester. Like any other monarchies, the executive, judicial, and legislative works fall to the crown however, in Westeros, the small council helps in administering those three branches. The King's Hand, however, is the second most powerful man in the small council, he is in charge of all those three branches when there is no king to be seen around. • 36. Similarities Between A Song Of Ice And Fire A lot of the character development and events that take place in A Song of Ice and Fire happen because of one large word we call "love", and whether that be in terms of a brother, child, or partner it can make us do some pretty crazy things. A time in particular that represents this is when Bran is climbing around Winterfell and he catches brother and sister Jaime and Cersei Lannister having intercourse. Jaime proceeds to push Bran off of the window sill in an attempt to kill him, but instead grants Bran immobilization and amnesia of the events that caused his fall. After Jaime shoves Bran he recites a cliche line "The things I do for love." I think through this quote and the other events that happen because of love in the story George R.R. ... The characters' help preserve the reader's commitment to the books, and wish for the series to never end. • 38. Ice And Fire Comparison In the fantastic novel A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin, every family dream to sit on the iron throne. From the vicious Lannisters to the cold–blooded Stark, everyone in Westeros cherishes the moment they will be the king. Over the Great Wall, winter is coming: white walkers, sort of ice zombies, threaten the peace of the kingdom. In Essos, Daenerys commands and conquers, leading the Dothraki. Games of Thrones, the publically acclaimed cinematic adaptation of the book, realized by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is partially faithful to the book. However, some characters have been sadly changed, the narrative diversity is lost in the series and some plot points negatively differed from the book. First of all, many protagonists from the book have been changed or removed for viewing purposes, creating an undesired change. For example, in the book, Tyrion Lannister, the dwarf, has his nose chopped after losing it in the Battle of Blackwater . His scarce makes him even scarier, adding it to his physical condition. On the other hand, in the cinematic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This whole plot twist is deleted in the cinematic adaptation, which is regrettable, because seeing a mother get the gratification of avenging her children is oddly satisfying. Some other plot twist are modified in the series, such as the fate of Shireen Baratheon. In the novel, she lived through the story without any problems. In Games of Thrones, Shireen is sacrificed by her father to R'hllor, the god of light. • 39. A Song Of Ice And Fire And Hamlet Comparison Yana G., Andreana Y., Sohail M., Nicholas D., Ishan P. Ms. Elliott AP English Literature 5 23 February 2016 A Brief Comparison of Themes in A Song of Ice and Fire and Hamlet While the works were created in two completely different genres and time periods, much of the themes and symbols in George R. R. Martin's high fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire can be mirrored in Shakespeare's work, namely Hamlet. The motifs of universal mortality, filial duty to revenge and the deconstruction of idealism can all be observed in the works throughout the story arcs of the main characters and in the pen and ink drawings on toned paper that was turned in with this essay. A recurring theme and, to many, the most distinguishing feature of Hamlet and A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet's need to avenge his father and the consequent massacre at the dinner table is directly mirrored in Robb Stark's journey to King's Landing to avenge Eddard's unlawful execution and the Red Wedding massacre that thusly occurs at The Twins. King Robb and Prince Hamlet, both young and charismatic leaders on a path to filial revenge, which ended in shambles due to a series of poor decisions. Hamlet's indecisiveness and honor lead him to stall his plans of regicide, resulting in his own demise. Similarly, Robb's neglect of his oath to the Freys lead to the massacre at The Twins, which is reminiscent in its details of Hamlet's death–banquet. Another two separate examples from both works includes the sloppy attempt at revenge of brothers against those who have abused their sisters. Laertes' recklessness in his fight with Hamlet to avenge Ophelia's death mirrors Oberyn Martell's combat with the Mountain in order to avenge his killing of his sister, Elia. Similar to Laertes, Oberyn acted out of arrogance and tried to squeeze out a confession out of the Mountain. Sadly, the only thing squeezed out was Oberyn's brain. To add icing to the steak, poisoned weapons were the culprits of their opponents' deaths in both works. Oberyn managed to get Gregor Clegane on his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
