of Education
Being an Ex-Officio
Governor
May 2011
‘The proper function of education is not
to provide solutions but to open eyes.’
“Ex-Officio and Foundation Governors are appointed
to Church Schools to be part of the formal Christian
presence on the Governing Body.”
“Church Schools should be centres
of excellence where all pupils are
educated according to a Christian
world view.”
2. Welcome to your new post as Ex-Officio
Governor. We hope that you will be happy
and greatly blessed in this new phase of your
ministry in education.
The Diocesan Board of Education places a
very high priority on the Church’s Mission
and Ministry through education: regarding
Church Schools as a ‘gospel gift’ and
education as a ‘sacred task.’ Therefore, we
are strongly committed to supporting the
one hundred and thirty Church Schools in
the Exeter Diocese – their staff and
Governing Bodies. We work closely with
Ex-Officio Governors who are regarded as
being not only the ‘physical’ link between
the local Church and Church Schools, but
also with the Diocesan Board of Education.
We very much hope you will enjoy your
association with the School and be able to
make an excellent contribution. Please do
not hesitate to ask us for any help and
support required.
With prayers and good wishes,
Diocesan Education Team.
What makes a Church
School Distinctive?
• Church Schools have a dual aim.
They exist to provide academic
excellence within a Christian
context.
• Church Schools should be places of
openness, acceptance and affirmation
– places where Christian principles
and Gospel values inform the whole
of the school curriculum.
• Church Schools should be places
where Religious Education and
Worship are central to the life and
work of the school; and where
Christianity is taught as truth.
• Church of England Schools seek to
serve their community in the name
of the Christian faith on which they
are founded.
