prehistorybroadlyspanningthe periodof 8000-1500 BC. Thisperiod
includesthe MesolithicandNeolithiccultural stagesinKorea,lasting
around 8000-3500 BC (“Incipient”to“Early”phases) and3500-1500
BC, respectively.Due tothe earlypresence of pottery,the entire
periodhadalsobeenincludedunderabroad label of “Korean
Neolithic”.

The JeulmunPotteryPeriodisnamedafterthe
decorated potteryvesselsthatforma large part
of the potteryassemblage consistentlyoverthe
above period,especially4000-2000 BC. Jeulmun
means“Comb-patterned”.A boominthe
archaeological excavationsof JeulmunPeriod
sitessince the mid-1990shas increased
knowledge aboutthisimportantformativeperiod
inthe prehistoryof EastAsia.
The Jeulmunwasa periodof hunting,gathering,andsmall-scale cultivationof plants.
Archaeologistssometimesrefertothislife-stylepatternas“broad-spectrumhunting-and-
gathering”.
