Dare to Dream: Get Educated! Conference, January 30, 2016
One-day Conference to Empower Latina Middle School Girls
Glen Ellyn, IL (Jan 22, 2016). The eighth annual “Dare to Dream: Get Educated!” Conference,
geared toward preparing young Latinas to further their education, will be at the College of
DuPage in Glen Ellyn on January 30, 2016. Girls and their mothers from DuPage County and
Suburban Cook County will hear Latina role models in successful careers talk about how they
dealt with obstacles to achieve their dream of a better life through higher education.
Dare to Dream: Get Educated! was created because statistics indicate that in DuPage County,
Latina girls drop out of high school at a rate that is more than four times higher than that of their
non-Latina white peers.
This year’s opening keynote speaker is Angy Paola Rivera, an immigrant youth activist from
New York who created and manages Ask Angy, a national undocumented youth advice column.
Angy also is featured in the POV film No Le Digas a Nadie (Don’t Tell Anyone). Dare to Dream:
Get Educated! will hold a screening of the film as a kickoff event to the conference. The
screening, which is free and open to the public will take place on Friday January 29, 2016 at
7pm, at College of DuPage, room SSC 2201.
The Dare to Dream: Get Educated! Conference will also feature a series of workshops and
panels on careers, college life and navigating the U.S. educational system.
Cynthia Brito, the president of Dare to Dream: Get Educated! will deliver the closing message.
Brito is a second generation Mexican-American soñadora. Despite facing adversities throughout
her life, Brito managed to obtain her Masters degree in Latin American and Latino studies with
high distinction, and now works as a civil rights paralegal. Brito has been selected as one of
2015’s most influential Latinos of Chicago.
Lily Perez, a professional singer and music graduate from Elmhurst College, will perform during
the Conference’s ice-breaker and registration time.
The Dare to Dream: Get Educated! Conference is made possible by grants from the DuPage
Foundation, support from the College of DuPage, funding from local branches of AAUW
(American Association of University Women), 100+ Women Who Care Elmhurst Area and by
many individual donations.
