UNIT 8 TASK 1
BY BENJAMIN KARRASS
OWNERSHIP
Ownership is the act or right of possessing something. Some
companies are privately owned and other are shared through a number
of different brands such as Walt Disney and the BBC. some companies
buy shares between companies, a board of directors are elected to run
that certain company such as Walt Disney. Other companies are
owned by the public just like the BBC, this is where the public of the UK
pay for their service to watch Tv, with a Tv licence. This type of company
is run by the government on their behalf.
OWNERSHIP OF BBC
The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is a company that is owned by the public where the people of
the Uk have to pay to use if they have a TV licence. This company is not private because it is accessible to
everyone who pays for it. Having a TV licence allows the people of the UK the live stream Television
programs on any device. The company is run by the government on the behalf of the people who pay their
TV licence. The BBC sets rules to make sure the company is suitable for national Television. However,
something named the BBC trust was the governing body of the BBC, but it has now turned into OFCOM
who regulate Television and the BBC’s performance, this is to make sure everything broadcasted is
suitable to be viewed. The BBC must make sure they follow the royalty charter, this also aims to provide
better quality Tv programs to entertain their audience. This also makes sure that all the programs are
suitable for the channel and the right target audience.
There are different people who work in the BBC. Firstly, the chairman of the BBC is named David Clementi
and he is responsible for all the meeting and making sure everything runs smoothly in the company.
Another Member of the BBc is Tony Hall and he is the director general, its his job to make sure everything
is under control and everything is going ok. Clementi and other trustees are independent from the BBC’s
executive board, which is lead by the BBC’s executive head and editor Tony Hall.
OWNERSHIP OF WALT DISNEY
The walt disney company is publicly traded organization which is owned by its shareholders.
The chair man and Ceo of the Walt Disney Company is Robert Iger, he took control of the
company in 2006. Robert Iger focuses on creating the best products for his target audience
as a brand. They try and utilise all the latest technology to make sure they are on the same
length as it’s audience. This allows them to expand as a brand into different markets creating
a wider audience. The largest shareholder are the Vanguard Group, Inc. with 5.5%, and State
Street Corp. with 4.22%. The Laurene Powell Jobs owning 7.27% of the shares now only owes
4% of the shares. The chair man who is responsible for all of this is Andy Bird, he is responsible
of Disney’s Business outside of the US, also Alan Braverman is the senior vice president of the
company. Braverman has the role of being the chief legal officer of the Walt Disney Company
FUNDING OF BBC
Some companies are funded by shareholders such as walt disney. Others such as the BBC are funded by
the general public. Companies use all different types of funding. The BBC use funding such as selling
formats, TV license fee, merchandise and CD’s of their own Tv shows or movies. This does not take
money from the shareholders or other companies, not all companies do this such as Walt Disney. An
example of this is Dr who because they have expanded their marketing by producing merchandise and
CD’s to fund their company of the BBC. Production placement is another way of funding the BBC. this
includes manufacturing the goods of their product by paying for either the TV show or their featured
Films. The licence fee for the BBC is priced around £147, The fee you pay provides a wide range of TV,
radio and online content, as well as developing new ways to deliver it to you. In addition to funding BBC
programmes and services, a proportion of the licence fee contributes to the costs of rolling out
broadband to the UK population. When the BBC get the money from the licence fee they use it to
improve their TV and company, as you can see in the picture the chart shows how they spend their
money on their company. The BBC uses most of the money they get on improving National Television
with Local Television and Radio behind it. This allows the BBc to create more revenue as the british
population have to pay to watch TV, this allows the company to earn more money from the services
they are providing their audience. The BBc create merchandise for their programs to expand their
audience and gain more money from revenue. The BBc has created something called the BBC store
where they allow their audience to access and buy merchandise, DVD’s and other products released
by the BBC. This allows the audience to watch their shows anywhere and anytime they want to.
FUNDING OF WALT DISNEY
Walt Disney has many way of funding their products, the walt disney studio film account for
a small percentage of revenue. The smallest amount of revenue comes from online
games and entertainment, the amount they get is around $1,299,000,000. Consumer
products such as merchandise and luxury goods produces the company around
$3,985,000,000. Disney uses other was to fund their products for their company and this
can include expanding their companies to other places around the world such as the
theme park of Disneyland, theses theme parks often produces around $15,099,000,000.
Lastly the biggest way Walt Disney fund himself for their company is their media networks
these include,, ABC, and ESPN which creates a value of $21,152,000,000. Walt Disney
Studios also funds its shareholders. AN example of a shareholder is CEO Robert Iger.
Robert Iger holds around 1.1 million shares in the company costing around $119,603,000.
Walt disney spent most of their funding on new projects such as creating new
amusement parks to buying other smaller companies and making them bigger. Walt
disney are known for their films and when they get funded from their products they
release new films to the public. An example of a company being bought is lucas films.
Disney bought the licence to star wars and now owns it, this means that all the new
movies by lucasfilms are owned by Disney such as the new star wars films.
BBC SYNERGY
Synergy is the release of a brand or product across different media platforms. Examples include
films, books and soundtracks. This allows the company to expands its audience and the brands
image. This is a good way for the companies to earn money, because they earn it for the more views
they receive on their products.
One example of a brand from the BBc that does synergy is Doctor Who, this brand is very well
known around the world from how the BBC give out the product, this can include the TV show being
able to be purchased anywhere in stores. Another example of synergy that Dr Who uses is the
comics and magazines they have, synergy in doctor Who is large because the brand has its own
merchandise and game. This shows that the brand has a big target audience and it wants to reach
out to as many people as possible. Doctor Who first started out as a TV show but as it started to get
popular the Brand decided to enlarge it as a whole so it started making merchandise available for
fans to purchase. This merchandise included toys, books, DVD’s and T-shirts, this shows us that the
brand has released different merchandise for all ages so it shows that the brand is trying to reach
out to a whole range of different audience members. Synergy also increases revenue, combines
talent and technology, the company can expand on the programme and doesn't need to make a
new programme. The BBc also use another type of synergy where they create a spinoff of the
current TV show so the fans can watch another show to see a different story of a character that
starred in the main programme, an example of this is The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who
Extra and Torchwood..
WALT DISNEY SYNERGY
Walt Disney was one of the first companies to use synergistic techniques in the 1930s. They granted licenses to
others to use Mickey Mouse on their merchandise. For example, Mickey Mouse games, lunchboxes and tshirts.
Another example of synergy used in Walt Disney is The Avengers, They started out as a comic book series and then
branched into all different kind of synergy techniques. Now the avengers are the 5th highest grossing movies of all
time. The films were produced by marvel studios which was bought and now owned by Walt Disney. Several
synergetic techniques were used to make the brand popular, this included creating a bunch of different films to
create a storyline based on the old comics, Aslo games have been created from the brand including The Avengers:
Battle For Earth, which was made available on Xbox 360 (Microsoft). Soundtracks from the films became available
for the audiences to buy and listen to. Merchandise such as toys, posters, clothing and many more became available
to buy after films were released such as captain america and iron man, this was before the avengers films were
taken place. This film series would often leave a message at the end of the film for the audience to watch, this would
want them to know what happen next so they would go and watch the other films that link to it. Doing this as a brand
allows the company to expand it’s audience to new people of different ages. For television the company would bring
new Tv shows to different channels such as Marvel's Avengers Assemble" and "Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.",
These are now available on Disney XD. synergy is used in the company to bring more of an audience to watch their
programmes and movies. This allows them to gain more money as a company and buy better equipment to make
their new products even better for their audience so they would not be annoyed with the result of any of their
products. Disney used the cover of ESPN Magazine to promote the release of The Avengers, which would usually
have a older male audience. Where the lego game has lego characters on the front to appeal to a younger audience.
BBC SUBSIDIARIES
These are smaller companies that are controlled by a larger company, this is done in the BBC because they
want to expand their audience to different people, for example that have another channel called CBBC which
only shows programmes for a young audience, they also have another channel like BBC News for a more older
and mature audience. This shows us that the BBC are trying to expand their company to a wide range of
different ages and this can be good because it allows them to bring out products for all ages. BBC have many
different subsidiaries. These include CBBC, BBC Academy, BBC Worldwide, BBC Sports, BBC News and BBC
Film. BBC worldwide is a main commercial arm that help the BBC maximise profit and helps the public service.
They do this by investing in commercials to show worldwide and to get more of an audience to watch their
shows and programmes onto the BBC and earn more money from it, they also gain more views as a company,
this is good because it helps them bring a larger audience into its brands. Another Subsidiary is BBC film, This
allows the BBC to create original films that are presented by the BBC when produced into cinemas and on TV.
The industry creates British oriented films and presents the films to the British audience who pay the TV fee.
BBC Films provides the films that can benefit the audience and not have to pay extra as they already pay a TV
license. The BBC creates Subsidiaries so a channel is dedicated to a category such as BBC sport, ont hsi
channel they would only show sports so someone who likes sports wont need to look for a programme about
sport where there is a channel about it. Another example is BBC News, this channel is dedicated to news and
just like BBc sport it will only show the audience News.
DISNEY SUBSIDIARIES
Walt Disney has several other smaller companies that they own, this is called Subsidiaries. These
include Marvel studios, ESPN, Pixar, ABC and Lucas Films. All of these subsidiaries have a different
role in the film industry of Walt Disney. For example, Marvel studios is dedicated to producing films
based on Marvel Comics characters. Pixar specialises in making animated feature films and ABC and
ESPN produce television. Lastly Lucas films who are known for the star wars franchise, It's also very
well known for its special effects, sound and computer animation for film. There are many reasons
why Subsidiaries, one of these is to stop competition in other companies. For example, Disney bought
pixar to stop competition on the animation films market. Disney would benefit from owning the best
animated company in the world, This allows disney to create more content and better content for
their viewers. Also pixar would also benefit from this because they now have the wide network of
distribution from disney. Another reason companies use Subsidiaries is to create a corporate identity.
For example, Marvels logo is still used in their films maintain the quality of their brand identity.
Subsidiaries are also created because it is cheaper for the main company and it allows they to invest
and make more money from the other smaller companies they now own. An example of this is that
the main company don't need to make a new animation company where they can just buy one that
has already been made. Disney done this with pixar because it was already a working company, it
was cheaper and easier. Disney don't need to buy all of their crew and equipment when they can but
the company with all of it done.
BBC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
The product is what the audience consume, and services are the platform is used to
deliver the product. The BBC has a service such as BBC One that presents the shows
such as Eastenders and Doctor Who, these are popular Television series that are
watched and viewed by many people who live in Britain. Both shows have a target
audience on who they want to watch the show. The Target audience for eastenders is
for any age because in the show it contains characters of all ages, from young to older.
This means anyone can watch it because the audience can relate to the characters
their age. Another example of a product and service that is produced by the company
BBC is Gavin and stacey on BBC three. Gavin and Stacey is a programme that can
relate to a more older mature audience such as young adults. The reason the age of
the programme is like this is because the people their age can relate to what may be
going on in the show, this can make the show more fun and enjoyable to watch for their
designated target audience. CBBC is a service that has been created and run by BBC.
CBBC provides a product such as children programmes like, Arthur, Copycats, M.I. HIgh
and Blue Peter. CBBC target young children around 8+ because most of the shows
contain children the same age as them or a bit older, this makes them enjoy the shows
more and the content they have been provided. The context of the shows on this
channel will be suitable for them and allow them to enjoy shows that they can relate to
and enjoy to watch.
DISNEY PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
One show that disney Produce is Gravity Falls, this show is distributed throughout the Disney
channel that is also owned by Disney. The target audience for the show and for disney channel
itself are children for this show it could be specifically of boys but other shows such as, Girl
Meets World, the target audience for this show can just be girls. Another product Disney
produce is the TV show Grey's Anatomy, which is distributed on the service ABC. The main
target audience for this show are 18-49 year old females. Disney have also produces films such
as Cars which has been released on DVD and also available on the marvel website. The
primary audience for the movie was both genders, aged 5-11, and the secondary audience are
parents. The movie is marked as family friendly meaning it is suitable for mostly all ages. The
film is designed for the parents to take their children to see it. Lastly, another product by Disney
is the TV show Pretty Little Liars, which is distributed from the service of FreeForm. The target
audience of this show is mainly teenage girls. There are a rage of different way disney produce
and distribute their products, their main way is usually by producing it onto Tv or in the cinemas
in a movie. Disney usually range their target through different shows to earn more money and
have a larger audience in the company as a whole, leading to more profit in the company. with
several products and services they can increase their brand image and identity.

This company is not private because it is accessible to everyone who pays for it. Having a TV licence allows the people of the UK the live stream Television programs on any device. The company is run by the government on the behalf of the people who pay their TV licence. The BBC sets rules to make sure the company is suitable for national Television. However, something named the BBC trust was the governing body of the BBC, but it has now turned into OFCOM who regulate Television and the BBC’s performance, this is to make sure everything broadcasted is suitable to be viewed. The BBC must make sure they follow the royalty charter, this also aims to provide better quality Tv programs to entertain their audience. This also makes sure that all the programs are suitable for the channel and the right target audience. There are different people who work in the BBC. Firstly, the chairman of the BBC is named David Clementi and he is responsible for all the meeting and making sure everything runs smoothly in the company. Another Member of the BBc is Tony Hall and he is the director general, its his job to make sure everything is under control and everything is going ok. • 5. FUNDING OF BBC Some companies are funded by shareholders such as walt disney. Others such as the BBC are funded by the general public. Companies use all different types of funding. The BBC use funding such as selling formats, TV license fee, merchandise and CD’s of their own Tv shows or movies. This does not take money from the shareholders or other companies, not all companies do this such as Walt Disney. An example of this is Dr who because they have expanded their marketing by producing merchandise and CD’s to fund their company of the BBC. Production placement is another way of funding the BBC. this includes manufacturing the goods of their product by paying for either the TV show or their featured Films. The licence fee for the BBC is priced around £147, The fee you pay provides a wide range of TV, radio and online content, as well as developing new ways to deliver it to you. In addition to funding BBC programmes and services, a proportion of the licence fee contributes to the costs of rolling out broadband to the UK population. When the BBC get the money from the licence fee they use it to improve their TV and company, as you can see in the picture the chart shows how they spend their money on their company. The BBC uses most of the money they get on improving National Television with Local Television and Radio behind it. This allows the BBc to create more revenue as the british population have to pay to watch TV, this allows the company to earn more money from the services they are providing their audience. The BBc create merchandise for their programs to expand their audience and gain more money from revenue. The BBc has created something called the BBC store where they allow their audience to access and buy merchandise, DVD’s and other products released by the BBC. This allows the audience to watch their shows anywhere and anytime they want to.

The smallest amount of revenue comes from online games and entertainment, the amount they get is around $1,299,000,000. Consumer products such as merchandise and luxury goods produces the company around $3,985,000,000. Disney uses other was to fund their products for their company and this can include expanding their companies to other places around the world such as the theme park of Disneyland, theses theme parks often produces around $15,099,000,000. Lastly the biggest way Walt Disney fund himself for their company is their media networks these include,, ABC, and ESPN which creates a value of $21,152,000,000. Walt Disney Studios also funds its shareholders. AN example of a shareholder is CEO Robert Iger. Robert Iger holds around 1.1 million shares in the company costing around $119,603,000. Walt disney spent most of their funding on new projects such as creating new amusement parks to buying other smaller companies and making them bigger. Walt disney are known for their films and when they get funded from their products they release new films to the public. An example of a company being bought is lucas films. Disney bought the licence to star wars and now owns it, this means that all the new movies by lucasfilms are owned by Disney such as the new star wars films.
  • 7. BBC SYNERGY Synergy is the release of a brand or product across different media platforms. Examples include films, books and soundtracks. This allows the company to expands its audience and the brands image. This is a good way for the companies to earn money, because they earn it for the more views they receive on their products. One example of a brand from the BBc that does synergy is Doctor Who, this brand is very well known around the world from how the BBC give out the product, this can include the TV show being able to be purchased anywhere in stores. Another example of synergy that Dr Who uses is the comics and magazines they have, synergy in doctor Who is large because the brand has its own merchandise and game. This shows that the brand has a big target audience and it wants to reach out to as many people as possible. Doctor Who first started out as a TV show but as it started to get popular the Brand decided to enlarge it as a whole so it started making merchandise available for fans to purchase. This merchandise included toys, books, DVD’s and T-shirts, this shows us that the brand has released different merchandise for all ages so it shows that the brand is trying to reach out to a whole range of different audience members. Synergy also increases revenue, combines talent and technology, the company can expand on the programme and doesn't need to make a new programme. The BBc also use another type of synergy where they create a spinoff of the current TV show so the fans can watch another show to see a different story of a character that starred in the main programme, an example of this is The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who Extra and Torchwood..
  • 8. WALT DISNEY SYNERGY Walt Disney was one of the first companies to use synergistic techniques in the 1930s. They granted licenses to others to use Mickey Mouse on their merchandise. For example, Mickey Mouse games, lunchboxes and tshirts. Another example of synergy used in Walt Disney is The Avengers, They started out as a comic book series and then branched into all different kind of synergy techniques. Now the avengers are the 5th highest grossing movies of all time. The films were produced by marvel studios which was bought and now owned by Walt Disney. Several synergetic techniques were used to make the brand popular, this included creating a bunch of different films to create a storyline based on the old comics, Aslo games have been created from the brand including The Avengers: Battle For Earth, which was made available on Xbox 360 (Microsoft). Soundtracks from the films became available for the audiences to buy and listen to. Merchandise such as toys, posters, clothing and many more became available to buy after films were released such as captain america and iron man, this was before the avengers films were taken place. This film series would often leave a message at the end of the film for the audience to watch, this would want them to know what happen next so they would go and watch the other films that link to it. Doing this as a brand allows the company to expand it’s audience to new people of different ages. For television the company would bring new Tv shows to different channels such as Marvel's Avengers Assemble" and "Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.", These are now available on Disney XD. synergy is used in the company to bring more of an audience to watch their programmes and movies. This allows them to gain more money as a company and buy better equipment to make their new products even better for their audience so they would not be annoyed with the result of any of their products. Disney used the cover of ESPN Magazine to promote the release of The Avengers, which would usually have a older male audience. Where the lego game has lego characters on the front to appeal to a younger audience.
  • 9. BBC SUBSIDIARIES These are smaller companies that are controlled by a larger company, this is done in the BBC because they want to expand their audience to different people, for example that have another channel called CBBC which only shows programmes for a young audience, they also have another channel like BBC News for a more older and mature audience. This shows us that the BBC are trying to expand their company to a wide range of different ages and this can be good because it allows them to bring out products for all ages. BBC have many different subsidiaries. These include CBBC, BBC Academy, BBC Worldwide, BBC Sports, BBC News and BBC Film. BBC worldwide is a main commercial arm that help the BBC maximise profit and helps the public service. They do this by investing in commercials to show worldwide and to get more of an audience to watch their shows and programmes onto the BBC and earn more money from it, they also gain more views as a company, this is good because it helps them bring a larger audience into its brands. Another Subsidiary is BBC film, This allows the BBC to create original films that are presented by the BBC when produced into cinemas and on TV. The industry creates British oriented films and presents the films to the British audience who pay the TV fee. BBC Films provides the films that can benefit the audience and not have to pay extra as they already pay a TV license. The BBC creates Subsidiaries so a channel is dedicated to a category such as BBC sport, ont hsi channel they would only show sports so someone who likes sports wont need to look for a programme about sport where there is a channel about it. Another example is BBC News, this channel is dedicated to news and just like BBc sport it will only show the audience News.
  • 10. DISNEY SUBSIDIARIES Walt Disney has several other smaller companies that they own, this is called Subsidiaries. These include Marvel studios, ESPN, Pixar, ABC and Lucas Films. All of these subsidiaries have a different role in the film industry of Walt Disney. For example, Marvel studios is dedicated to producing films based on Marvel Comics characters. Pixar specialises in making animated feature films and ABC and ESPN produce television. Lastly Lucas films who are known for the star wars franchise, It's also very well known for its special effects, sound and computer animation for film. There are many reasons why Subsidiaries, one of these is to stop competition in other companies. For example, Disney bought pixar to stop competition on the animation films market. Disney would benefit from owning the best animated company in the world, This allows disney to create more content and better content for their viewers. Also pixar would also benefit from this because they now have the wide network of distribution from disney. Another reason companies use Subsidiaries is to create a corporate identity. For example, Marvels logo is still used in their films maintain the quality of their brand identity. Subsidiaries are also created because it is cheaper for the main company and it allows they to invest and make more money from the other smaller companies they now own. An example of this is that the main company don't need to make a new animation company where they can just buy one that has already been made. Disney done this with pixar because it was already a working company, it was cheaper and easier. Disney don't need to buy all of their crew and equipment when they can but the company with all of it done.

Both shows have a target audience on who they want to watch the show. The Target audience for eastenders is for any age because in the show it contains characters of all ages, from young to older. This means anyone can watch it because the audience can relate to the characters their age. Another example of a product and service that is produced by the company BBC is Gavin and stacey on BBC three. Gavin and Stacey is a programme that can relate to a more older mature audience such as young adults. The reason the age of the programme is like this is because the people their age can relate to what may be going on in the show, this can make the show more fun and enjoyable to watch for their designated target audience. CBBC is a service that has been created and run by BBC. CBBC provides a product such as children programmes like, Arthur, Copycats, M.I. HIgh and Blue Peter.
