The Pentagon said a Russian fighter jet made multiple close–range passes near an American navy
destroyer. The warship was deployed in the Black Sea as Russian military monitored NATO's
systematic build–up of naval forces in the region. "This provocative and unprofessional Russian
action is inconsistent with their national protocols and previous agreements on the professional
interaction between our militaries," said Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman. "I have
difficulty believing that two Russian pilots on their own would choose to take such an action."
First lets understand where this happened. This did not happen in the Gulf of Mexico or somewhere
near the U.S., it happened near Russia and Ukraine and it was in the Black Sea. Now the Black Sea
is about as big as a old time washtub when it comes to putting tons and tons of warships in it...

Lincoln Ordered A Naval Blockade Of The United States
In late April, after the beginning of hostilities at Fort Sumter, Lincoln ordered a naval blockade of
the states that has succeeded so far. Knowing that the South could not match the Union 's navy, the
Secretary of the Confederacy 's navy Stephen Mallory, at the time being and advocate for more
armor on ships, decided that instead of trying to match the production power of the north, they
would build ships that were superior to the North 's individually. Mallory hired a group of men to
help him design the ship. They knew that due to the added armor, they would need to use the new
steam engines, recently being applied to ships. However, it took almost a year to make them and
have them fitted.
Fortunately, one of men a Mallory had hired told him about a naval yard burned at the beginning of
the war, with a ship or two fitted with the engine. One of those ships was the recently re–surfaced,
the CSS. Merrimack, which had sunk when the Confederacy burned a naval yard. William
Williamson, one of the men Mallory had hired to help with the construction of a armored ship,
pointed out that instead of building new engines they could use the hull of the already ready
Merrimack. When construction of the Virginia had completed, she boasted an arsenal of 14 different
types of guns, along with twenty–six inches of armor composed of pine wood and iron.

This plan failed, however, as lawmakers were not able to come up with a bipartisan solution. After
both parties failed to come up with a solution that would satisfy both parties, automatic budget cuts
then came into effect. These automatic cuts called for a $109 billion to be cut annual. The weight of
the cuts would be spread equally throughout the U.S. Government, being carried by both military
and nonmilitary departments alike, meaning that the budget cuts to the military alone would total

Navy Vessels: The USS Monitor Essay
The United States government has long felt the need to maintain a strong Navy. In doing so they had
to keep up with advancements in technology. During the civil war in the Brooklyn harbor the United
States Navy built a vessel that would duel the South's vessel the CSS Virginia. The battle would be
the first of the kind in that for the first time two Ironclad vessels would battle. The purpose of the
Ironclad warship was not new to the United Sates government. There had been previous attempts at
making such a vessel, most notably by the Koreans. At the time of the Civil War there were two

The engine of the USS Monitor along with numerous other parts of the ship was designed by John
Ericsson. The engine was a steam, single cylinder vibrating lever engine generated by two fire tube
boilers" (military factory). The engine turned a nine inch diameter shaft which turned the propeller.
This engine generated approximately 300 horsepower and was capable of driving the Monitor at six
knots. The part of the ship for which the USS Monitor is most famous is the turret. The turret is
circular in design and is made to house guns. The turret was made of one inch steel plates and
weighing one hundred and twenty tons. The turret was twenty one and a half feet in diameter and
nine feet tall. The turret housed the Dahlgren guns. During battle two of the crew members would
man the turret. The Battle of Hampton Roads for which the USS Monitor is famous took place on
March eighth 1862. It was not until the next morning that the USS Monitor would appear for battle.
After sinking two ships and reengaging battle to sink the frigate Minnesota, the Monitor would
appear for battle. During the engagement both ships received minor damage of which the Monitor's
turret was damaged causing it to turn continuously during the engagement. Around noon the
Monitor disengaged from the battle in order to resupply ammunition. While the Monitor was
resupplying, the Virginia refocused on the Minnesota, setting the ship on fire. After seeing the
