anything, on any subject, at any time with just a few clicks of a button. The act of gathering
information used to be a much more tedious and physical endeavor. However, these days it can be
done with ease thanks to the enormous developments in mass media distribution over the last
century. The major mode of information distribution has went from mostly print to internet and
everything in between. The amount of people reached has grown dramatically from a few hundred
to millions in an instant.
Major Developments Mass production was one of the first major developments that led the charge
to the emergence of mass media. The ability to print thousands of copies in print made it possible to
reach a higher population in a shorter amount of time. This made keeping up with current events
much easier for the public. Another major development in the emergence of mass media was the
invention of television. Television brought about news programs, reality programs, and product

belonging. The systems and symbols are used to convey information and assigns meaning and
values to our lives. Often culture is defined as the symbols society uses to express themselves as
individuals or groups. Culture is the practice that allows individuals to either agree or disagree with
the values and ideas that are portrayed and communication helps to circulate these values. There
have been major developments in the progression of communication and how information is
conveyed in culture during the last century. Societies shared information and meaning orally in the
beginning. Information was slowly passed to others by the word of mouth, by teachers, poets, and

the minds of the masses". In today's society, mass media plays a vital role and is a significant aspect
in many people's lives. Mass media consists of the internet, television, news, music, game systems,
radio, and the press; mass media is used everywhere and for everything. Specifically, in teenagers
lives, mass media plays a significant role. Tennagers are in their grwoing stages and at this time
everything that surrounds them influences them greatly. That being said, the media has a great
impact on teens in regards to teen dating violence which has affected them physically, emotionally,
and sexually. Furthermore, we have found that certain aspects of media are associated with high
risks teen dating violence, specifically the time spent using it and the effects of the content in which
teens are exposed to.
Exposure to violent media from entities such as video games is one cause that has been found to
have large effects on teens in regards to teen dating violence. According to Bushman and Craig
(2001), "exposure to television and movie violence suggests that playing violent video games will
increase aggressive behavior, and a meta–analytic review of the video–game research literature
reveals that violent video games increase aggressive behavior in children and young adults" (Craig

Does the media negatively affect our thinking? Steven Pinker (2011) explains in his article "Mind
Over Mass Media" that the media does not have negative effects on our intelligence. He argues that
because of media and technology, our intelligence increased at high levels. The media has created
many benefits and opportunities of empowerment for people across the world; I believe that with
self–control and non–habit forming behaviors, technology could be the only thing that will continue
to keep us advanced and intelligent, without harming our intellect.
Steven Pinker (2011), a psychology professor at Harvard University, published his article "Mind
Over Mass Media" in the New York Times in 2010. His article examines how the use of technology
affects our thinking abilities; he argues a very debatable subject for media critics. For years, media
critics have panicked because of each type new media that has emerged; "the printing press,
newspapers, paperbacks and television were all once denounced as threats to consumers' brainpower
and moral fiber" (Pinker, 2011, p. 172). Most of the panics that these media critics create fail and
ultimately end up being ignored because even with the years of technology, our IQs have only risen.
For Pinker to prove his point that media does not affect our intelligence, he uses scientists as an
example. He explains that science requires "high levels of brainwork and is measured by clear

back to centuries, the media is prominent through the modes of television, internet, and paper press.
Media is the main means of mass communication in the twenty–first century, and is the central
source of information for the general public. A new form of media, social media, has gained
popularity in recent years. The First social media platform was born in 1997 with the launch of the
first social media site, Six Degrees, a site meant to connect people worldwide. By the year 2000,
nearly one–hundred million people gained access to the internet, which resulted in more people

true and reputable information from the media. If they are not now, well informed, then a society
filled with uneducated individuals will reside. Malinformation generates arguments that can become
more serious and turn into a much bigger problem. To avoid this, highly intellectual people must
attempt to find a way for students to be well informed. Researches have taken the time to study the
influence media has on students. In a recent study, "Stanford researchers that evaluated students'
ability to assess information sources and described the results as "dismaying," "bleak" and "[a]
threat to democracy" (Domonoske). The study proved that students do not know how to determine
fake from real information. If there is no way for students to receive true and unbiased information
from news sources then they should develop the skills to assess any material presented to them.

In 1999, two students from Columbine High School planned an attack in which they killed 20
students and one adult with three injured. In 2007, the second deadliest shooting event, took place at
Virginia Tech with 32 dead. In 2012, Adam Lanza shot 20 children and 6 adults in the horrific event
known as the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. More recently in 2016 a shooting took
place in an Orlando nightclub, Pulse, where 49 people were killed and 58 people were injured.
According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non–profit organization that supplies people with
refutable statistics about gun violence, a mass shooting is any event in which a gunman shoots more
than four people in the same general time and location. As stated by the GVA, there has been 273
mass shootings in 2017 alone. This means that there has been an average of 7.5 mass shootings a
week, which indicates that at least four or more people were either killed or injured every day from
January to October. Seventeen of the deadliest mass shootings in history of the US happened in the
past decade. The US is now the country that mass shootings are affiliated with; America take credit
for only 5% of the world's population but takes responsibility of 31% of the world's mass shootings.
How these tragedies occur and what causes them is the topic that arises as an effect of these
shootings. Most parents do not worry about whether their kids will grow up to be psychopaths,
sociopaths, or mass shooters. They also do not worry about how the media their children are
exposed to will affect them. Moreover, these parents are more likely to be concerned with how their
children interact with other kids and other family members. Day–to–day social interactions just
seem more important. All kids throw aggressive temper tantrums but that does not mean they are
capable of being violent. We recognize that there are outside influences that lead to an individual's
aggression but we rarely acknowledge that aggression may correlate with violent media.
For years now, researches have been studying the correlation between violent media and the
aggression in children. Undoubtedly the conclusion is that violent media does indeed increase the
aggressive nature in kids.

from team NASAW in the Pumpkin Chunkin ' competition. Team NASAW has a trebuchet with a
heavy weight and a long arm. There arm and weight start next to each other at the beginning. The
weight drops forward and like a whip the arm swings around and fires the pumpkin into the air at

Sudden introduction of mass media into society undoubtedly caused a shift in societal views and
behaviors, evident from the vast amount of research that started as soon as television and other
sources became available in households worldwide. Mass media constitutes anything that helps
reach a mass audience such as television, newspaper, radio, social media, and even video games.
Merriam–Webster dictionary defines a mass medium as "a medium of communication that is
designed to reach the mass of the people – usually used in plural,". From building a dependency on
mass media, to changing the way some children and young adults behave, mass media has played
and continues to play a massive role in shaping today's society.
It is important to first note the exact magnitude of media today. According to the AC
Nielsen company, the 2016–17 television season will consist of 118.4 million TV homes in
America. Those households include 301.7 million people above the age of two years old.
Nielsen (or Nielsen Holdings) is a global information data and measurement company. In
September of 2017, records showed the largest consumption of mass media ever. Those who
consume television, on average, consumed 238 minutes a day (Statista, 2017). From those same

hundred injured. Because of the atrocity of the shooting, people are still talking about it months
later. Within the month afterwards four more mass shootings occurred as opposed to a single one the
previous month (Gun Violence Archive). Why the sudden increase in mass shootings? This
particular shooting brought a lot of attention and media time, but it's not the only one people have
heard about. It seems almost as if there is a shooting every day. Media has the tendency to over
exaggerate the amount and severity of shootings. Reporting excessively on mass shootings can
actually increase the amount of shootings. Placing minimal restrictions on media reports could
prevent future shootings and protect more people from harm. Mass shootings have different
definitions based on each person's opinion. The official definition according to the Investigative
Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012 is "3 or more killings in a single incident; and... [in] a
place of public use". Some attacks often reported on only result in injuries and no deaths, this causes

In today's day and age, more and more individuals are changing their perspectives to match that of
the media's current ideals. Concern over the media's influence on body image has recently risen,
striking the notion that many people regard the images shown throughout media as 'real'. However,
unbeknownst to them, such unbelievably thin body types are not quite attainable in reality, and
therefore, individuals' own beauty ideals and body images become unrealistic. The mass media's
ideal image of thinness has greatly impacted the overall body image of today, and has been linked to

both parties gained interest in the conflict when the drawdown of Iraq and the subsequent drawn

Mass media is communication that reaches a large audience. This includes television, advertisement,
the Internet, newspapers, and so on. Mass media is a significant effect in modern culture in America.
It creates ideas and sustained within society not only send ideological messages out to the public but
to advertise this ideas which are tend to manipulate our mantalities. The mass media interperts the
views of the majority of the people, the working class, to have their greatest influence on individuals
over time. Through continiouslly observing, the media can have an influence on personal values and
beliefs. It plays a significant role as it illustrate social comparison that eventually leads to the

variety of changes like increase in social interactions, social change and a change in the standard of
life. Media plays an outstanding role in strengthening society because of its purpose in informing,
educating and entertaining people. Because of the media's inherent ability to reach large groups of
