How does a project define itself, claim its own
territory, create its own views, breath in its own
air, bathe in its own light, when located in a
somewhat unremarkable industrial park in
suburban Maryland? To respond to this question, we have chosen to carefully place three
elements within the site: a box, a screen, and a
carpet of flowers, in an effort to manipulate and
highlight the positive features of the site. The
manner in which these simple elements relate
to each other, and their surroundings is what
creates for us, and we hope for the users, the
soul of the project.
The project consists of approximately 40,000
square feet of industrial manufacturing and
office space. The primary element (containing the program) is the two-story box, placed
in the Northeast corner of the site. Within this
volume, a double-height manufacturing hall is
created, flanked on the north and east sides by
two levels of manufacturing associated spaces
and administrative offices. The sky-lit manufacturing hall, 197 feet long by 126 feet wide,
has a single opening on the west facade, 10 feet
tall by 72 feet wide, the width corresponding
precisely to that of the “flower carpet” beyond.
A variety of flowers have been chosen for this
carpet, creating a seasonally changing landscape, even more vibrant when contrasted with
the deliberate industrial aesthetic of the hall. In
addition to the reds, pinks, and yellows of the
flowers, touches of blue are brought into the
composition through the skylights above.
The entire volume is wrapped in reflective metal sheeting. It reflects the surrounding natural
and built elements, and allows the factory to
blend into its environment. Flowers, trees, sky,
glass, steel, brick, asphalt, are reflected and
juxtaposed. A controlled light is permitted to
penetrate into the space. Along the North side
of the box, two levels of administrative spaces
are placed behind a glass facade. 15 feet beyond, a 30 feet tall freestanding woven metal
mesh screen has been placed in the landscape.
Located along the main access road, it is a kind
of ephemeral billboard, blurring the adjacent
buildings from the offices while simultaneously
advertising itself, and identifying the building
to those familiar with GKD and its metal mesh
products. The remaining administrative spaces
are located on the second level along the eastern facade. Here, exterior sliding mesh screens
provide shading while animating the facade,
controlled individually by those inside. A desire for simplicity is reflected in the detailing
and selection of materials, which is intended to
reflect the qualities of GKD, portraying a sense
of permanence, durability, and efficiency.
This direct solution is intended to connect the
fabric of the site with the materials that are
produced within it. And it is exactly this connection, which creates a new and interesting
understanding of the relationship between
structure, material, and place.

Come può un progetto far propria una definizione, un territorio, un’idea, vivere di vita propria,
immergersi in una luce tutta sua, quando si trova in un parco industriale alquanto anonimo del
Maryland suburbano? Per rispondere a questa
domanda, abbiamo scelto di porre tre elementi all’interno del sito: una scatola, una parete
divisoria ed un tappeto di fiori, nel tentativo di
manipolare e mettere in rilievo le caratteristiche
positive del sito. La modalità con cui questi semplici elementi si relazionano l’uno l’altro e con
ciò che li circonda è per noi, e speriamo anche
per gli utenti, l’anima del progetto, che consiste
in uno spazio per la produzione industriale e
uffici pari ad approssimativamente 40.000 piedi
quadrati. L’elemento primario (che definisce il
progetto) è una scatola a due piani, posta all’angolo nord-est del sito. All’interno di questo volume è stata realizzata una sala di produzione a
doppia altezza affiancata, sui lati nord ed est, da
due livelli di spazi per il processo produttivo e
per gli uffici amministrativi. La sala di produzione, lunga 197 piedi e larga 126 piedi e illuminata da un lucernaio, presenta sulla facciata ovest
un’unica apertura con altezza di 10 piedi e una
larghezza di 72, quest’ultima perfettamente corrispondente a quella del “tappeto di fiori” posto
al di là. Per il tappeto la scelta è caduta su una
varietà di fiori che va a realizzare un paesaggio
che cambia con il mutare delle stagioni e che risulta ancora più vibrante in contrasto all’estetica
volutamente industriale della sala di produzione.

Oltre al rosso, al rosa e al giallo dei fiori, tocchi
di blu sono immessi nella composizione dai lucernai in alto. L’intero volume è avvolto da fogli
di metallo che riflettono gli elementi circostanti
naturali e quelli costruiti, facendo sì che la fabbrica si amalgami con l’ambiente. Fiori, alberi,
cielo, vetro, acciaio, mattoni, asfalto, si riflettono
l’uno con l’altro mentre nello spazio viene emessa un’illuminazione guidata. Lungo il lato nord
della “scatola”, due livelli di spazi amministrativi sono posti dietro ad una facciata di vetro e, 15
piedi oltre, è stata collocata nel paesaggio una
rete metallica con un’altezza di 30 piedi. Lungo
la via di accesso principale, una specie di effimero tabellone pubblicitario si auto-sponsorizza rendendo al contempo indistinti i profili degli
edifici adiacenti e degli uffici, permettendo la facile identificazione dell’edificio a tutti coloro che
sono pratici della GKD e della sua produzione di
reti metalliche. I rimanenti spazi amministrativi
sono disposti sul secondo livello, lungo la facciata esterna, dove alcuni pannelli scorrevoli di
rete metallica, azionabili singolarmente dall’interno, danno ombra vivacizzando al contempo
la facciata. Il desiderio di semplicità si riflette
nei dettagli e nella selezione dei materiali che
rimandano alle qualità della GKD e danno un
senso di stabilità, durata ed efficienza.
Con questa soluzione si è voluto creare un collegamento diretto tra il sito e la produzione, realizzando una nuova, interessante interpretazione
della relazione tra struttura, materiali e luogo.
