2. Progetti Hotel Crowne Plaza Esattamente trent’anni fa Georges Perec, pubbli-
cava alcuni appunti intorno al progetto di trascor-
rere un mese intero all’interno di un aeroporto
internazionale, senza mai uscirne, se non per
prendere un volo che lo conducesse all’interno
di un altro aeroporto del tutto analogo al prece-
dente. L’interesse per una simile impresa, di fatto
semplicemente realizzabile, sarebbe risieduto so-
prattutto nel suo esotismo: uno spostamento, più
apparente che reale, delle abitudini e dei ritmi...
un aeroporto non è nient’altro che una specie di
galleria commerciale: un simulacro di quartiere; e
offre circa le stesse prestazioni di un albergo. Il la-
voro sviluppato dallo studio Groupe-h sul Crowne
Plaza Hotel di Ginevra dà forma, tre decenni dopo,
a quelle intuizioni, legando in unico sistema so-
vraterritoriale, un aeroporto, un centro congressi
e il più grande hotel svizzero. Il progetto non è
semplicemente l’estensione del vecchio albergo,
costruito negli anni Ottanta, per aumentare il
numero di camere da 300 a 500, dotando il nuovo
complesso di adeguati servizi e sale congressi, ma
è la traduzione in termini architettonici, di una
strategia commerciale e gestionale che travalica
la scala urbana per coinvolgere in una complessa
rete diverse zone di influenza extra-nazionali.
Il Crowne Plaza sorge al margine della città, in
prossimità dell’aeroporto di Cointrin e del centro
fieristico Palexpò, interconnesso con le principali
reti infrastrutturali della regione. La scelta di am-
pliare il complesso alberghiero, nata dall’esigenza
di assorbire la sempre crescente richiesta di spazi
congressuali, innesta una serie di reazioni che
implicano un preciso salto di scala in tutto il siste-
ma, fondendo in un unico macroedificio l’albergo,

Exactly thirty years ago, Georges Perec pu-
blished some notes about a project for spen-
ding an entire month within an international
airport, without ever leaving except to take a
flight that would take him to another airport
much the same as the previous one. The inte-
rest of such an undertaking, which is actually
quite easy to realize, is found mainly in its exo-
ticism: a transfer, more virtual than actual, of
the habits and rhythms… an airport is nothing
other than a kind of shopping mall: an imitation
of neighborhoods; it provides almost the same
services as a hotel. The work developed by the
Groupe-h studio on the Crowne Plaza Hotel of
Geneva gives form, three decades later, to these
intuitions, connecting an airport, a conference
center and the largest Swiss hotel in a single
underground system. The project is more than
the mere expansion of the old hotel, built in the
1980s, by increasing the number of rooms from
300 to 500, equipping the new complex with
the needed services and conference rooms. It

a commercial and management strategy that
crosses over the urban scale to involve different
zones of extranational influence in a complex
network.
Crowne Plaza stands on the edge of the city
near the Cointrin airport and the Palexpò fair-

major infrastructural networks. The choice to
expand the hotel complex came out of the need
to absorb the growing demand for conference
spaces, triggering a series of reactions that en-
tailed a specific jump in scale of the entire sy- 2
