Progress is built on ideas.
Mushrif Water Reservoir
Phases 4, 5 and 6
2
3
On the outskirts of Dubai the
world’s largest drinking water
reservoir has been built by
Max Bogl. Dubai Electricity and
Water Authority (DEWA) have
invested approximately 600 mil-
lion AED in the construction
of three new tanks with a
capacity of 820 million litres of
drinking water. The Reservoir
is supplied with water from
the desalination plant located
in the Jebel Ali district 35 km
away. The new Reservoir is
crucial for the water supply to
the close-by districts of Dubai.
During a construction period
of approximately 26 months
the project has consumed
300,000 m³ of concrete and
30,000 to of reinforced steel.
5,000 m of pipes with diam-
eters of DN 900 up to DN 1,200
have been installed.
Mushrif Water Reservoir
Phases 4, 5 and 6 (180 Million Gallon)
4
The reinforced concrete Reser-
voir is built on a 33 km drain-
age system. The purpose of it
is to observe leak tightness and
to drain potentially accumu-
lated water in order to prevent
structural damages.
Each of the three storage tanks
measures 375 m x 175 m with
a depth of 5,5 m. The Tanks
are partitioned into 4 compart
ments, which are further divid-
ed into 8 smaller sections by
9,500 running metres of run-
ning walls.
Construction Concept
9,500 m running walls
30,000 to of reinforced steel was installed.
5
New pipes and chambers were connected with the existing network.
20,000 pieces
filigran elements
4,500 pieces of precast beams and 6,000 columns were erected.
One million cubic metres of
desert sand was excavated.
6
In order to ensure leak tight-
ness 40 km of waterstop and
300,000 m² PVC membranes
were installed. After com-
pletion of the shell and core
works all tanks underwent a
series of leak tightness tests,
with 65 million litres of water.
A network of approximately
100 fully automated valves
enabled the supervision of the
supply and drain of drinking
water from a centralised con-
trol centre.
Up-to-date measuring instru-
ments allow a fully automated
control of water quality, water
pressure and water levels in
the tanks as well as a CCTV sys-
tem covering the entire site.
7
Tight Program
To achieve the Program
2,000 labourers were work-
ing 24 hours per day, 7 days
a week. At the peak of
the construction 13 Tower
cranes were operating with
outside temperatures of up
to 50°C. In order to provide
the construction site with
the necessary daily quan-
tity of 1,000 m³ concrete, a
batching plant was erected
directly on site.
Safety
To assure safety for the entire
work force throughout all
construction phases was in-
deed a highly challenging task.
Due to regular site inspec-
tions carried out by safety and
health protection experts and
safety training provided for
all labourers and employees,
5 million working hours were
performed without any inter-
ruptions caused by security-
related accidents.
