Filters are used in air conditioning system to filter the
return air before it is blown over either heating or cooling
coil, to prevent clogging of coil surface by dust particles
and reducing its efficiency in proper heat transfer.
They clean air by removing dust and dust particles and
are located within the return air duct. They are made of
many materials including spun glass and composite
plastics. Other filter materials maintain an electrostatic
charge and attract and capture dust particles from air
flowing through them.
4. TYPES OF FILTERS
Types of HVAC Filters:
1a. Fiberglass Filters: Typically manufactured using medium
to heavy cardboard frame with layered fiberglass reinforced
with metal mesh for support from collapse. They are used in
most HVAC filtration applications.
1b. Polyester Filter Media Pads: Polyester offers higher
resistance and dust holding capabilities than most fiberglass
filters. Frequently used to replace fiberglass filters, which can
fragment and send fibers in air stream, they are used in most
HVAC filtration applications.
5. 2.Viscous/Wet Filters:
Another category of
commercial filters is known
as industrial cleanable cloth
filters. These filters have a
built-in mechanism for
periodically cleaning the
filtering surfaces of
accumulated dust.
Oil sprayed pipe/oil dipped
perforated grills to arrest
dust particles

6. 3.Electrostatic
Filters: These filters
create a self-generated
charge helping to
collect dust particles.
These filters are
typically manufactured
using multiple layers of
polypropylene media or
similar within a
galvanized frame or
cardboard frame.

7. 4. HEPA Filters: These
units (High Efficiency
Particulate Arrestance) filter
the air passing through
them at a very fine scale.
These filters are known to
filter 99.97% of all particles
of 0.3 microns or larger
