Sermon by: Brian BIrddow
2. Objective of Lesson
1. To understand the Jew and Samaritan
relationship.
2. To understand how Jesus approached the
woman.
3. To understand her response and how it
purports to us.
3. Jews vs. Samaritans??
• The nation of Israel was divided into two nations in the
days of Rehoboam (Ref. 1 Kings 12). Israel was
composed of the ten tribes to the north, and Judah
was made up two tribes (South) of Judah and
Benjamin.
• The animosity between the Jews (inhabitants of the
Judah, the southern kingdom) and Israelites began
immediately after the division, as Samaria was the
capital city of the northern kingdom (with Jeroboam
as her first king). Rehoboam is king of Judah or
Southern king.
4. Jews vs. Samaritans??
• Jeroboam changed the worship of
the Israelites in 1 Ki. 12:24-33. No
longer did the Jews of the north travel
to Jerusalem to offer sacrifice and
worship like God commanded (Ref.
Deut. 12:4-14). Jeroboam set up idols
in Dan and Bethel for them to worship!
Error!!
5. Dan and
Bethel is
were the
northern
Kingdom
worshipped
ISRAEL IS NORTHERN
JUDAH IS SOUTHERN
DIVIDED KINGDOM
6. Jews vs. Samaritans??
• The Samaritans were also a thorn in the flesh
when the Jews were trying to rebuild the wall.
• Nehemiah 4:2 He spoke in the presence of his
brothers and the wealthy men of Samaria and
said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Are
they going to restore it for themselves? Can they
offer sacrifices? Can they finish in a day? Can
they revive the stones from the dusty rubble even
the burned ones?”
7. • Jesus had been in
Judea the south,
and was heading
north to Galilee.
• Samaria was
between the two
and many devout
Jews would cross
the Jordan river
and travel through
Perea to avoid
contact with
Samaritans.
10. Application
★ Time does not always heal wounds. Hundreds
of years have passed and the Jews are still at
odds with the Samaritans!
★ We can pass down generational errors and
hate! (John 4:20).
★ Someone has to stand up for what is right!
(John 4:4)
12. Jesus approach to
evangelism!
CONTACT OTHERS SOCIALLY (John 4:7)
A. Given the cultural at the time, Jesus easily could have sat
quietly while the Samaritan woman came, drew her water
from the well, and left. <<<HE DID NOT>>>> He struck
up a conversation by asking her to give Him a drink.
B. If you go to the same gas station, instead of paying at the
pump, go in a pay. Create a relationship, they may not
have obeyed the gospel or they might can help us in
various ways.
13. Jesus approach to
evangelism!
• TURN THE CONVERSATION INTO A
SPIRTUAL ONE!
• John 4:9-10 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him,
“How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I
am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with
Samaritans.)
• Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of
God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you
would have asked Him, and He would have given you
living water.”
14. EXAMPLE
TURN THE CONVERSATION INTO A SPIRITUAL
ONE!
• (SPORTS) Instead of kneeling for the flag, wouldn’t it be great
if they came together and prayed for God’s will to be done!
• (FOOD) Sitting in line waiting to be seated…Boy we sure are
blessed to have food at our disposal like we do. Isn’t the God
of heaven and earth good?
• (STORE) Check out line, cashier ask “How are things with
you?” I could complain but when I think of heaven….
15. Jesus approach to
evangelism!
• He did not let ethnicity to keep Him from fishing for
souls!
• He did not allow gender to keep Him from fishing for
souls.
• He did not allow her sinful state to stop Him from
evangelizing.
• We sometimes make up our minds as to who will and
will not obey the gospel! We are then playing God!!
