Presentation given at the M|17 MariaDB User Conference 2017 https://m17.mariadb.com/ Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP used to be the most widely used web application stacks. As technology evolves, this is no longer the case. For the M part, MariaDB has replaced MySQL in numerous Linux distributions and development environments, and is becoming the new M in most production environments as well. This talk presents how the landscape looks today, and why and how web developers are migrating to MariaDB around the globe.

As proxies (and database routers) go, the first one I ever used was the now deprecated MySQL Proxy. Since then, I've managed to use MariaDB MaxScale quite a bit (including its fork AirBnB MaxScale), played around with ProxySQL in recent time, and also started taking a look at MySQL Router. In this quick 20-minute overview, we'll discuss why these three exist, a feature comparison, and reasons when to use the right tool for the job.

Each of these DBMSs has a unique set of features, unavailable in its analogue (MariaDB features might be unavailable in MySQL, and vice versa). Failure happens, and we can learn from it. We need to think about backups, but also verification of them. We should definitely make use of replication and think about automatic failover. And security is key, but don't forget that encryption is now available in MySQL, Percona Server and MariaDB Server.

Having spent more than the last decade being the main point of contact for distributions shipping MySQL, then MariaDB Server, it's clear that working with distributions have many challenges. Licensing changes (when MySQL moved the client libraries from LGPL to GPL with a FOSS Exception), ABI changes, speed (or lack thereof) of distribution releases/freezes, supporting the software throughout the lifespan of the distribution, specific bugs due to platforms, and a lot more will be discussed in this talk. Let's not forget the politics. How do we decide "tiers" of importance for distributions? As a bonus, there will be a focus on how much effort it took to "replace" MySQL with MariaDB. Benefits: if you're making a distribution, this is the point of view of the upstream package makers. Why are distribution statistics important to us? Do we monitor your bugs system or do you have a better escalation to us? How do we test to make sure things are going well before release. This and more will be spoken about. As an upstream project (package), we love nothing more than being available everywhere. But time and energy goes into making this is so as there are quirks in every distribution.

MySQL is a unique adult (now 21 years old) in many ways. It supports plugins. It supports storage engines. It is also owned by Oracle, thus birthing two branches of the popular opensource database: Percona Server and MariaDB Server. It also once spawned a fork: Drizzle. Lately a consortium of web scale users (think a chunk of the top 10 sites out there) have spawned WebScaleSQL. You're a busy DBA having to maintain a mix of this. Or you're a CIO planning to choose one branch. How do you go about picking? Supporting multiple databases? Find out more in this talk. Also covered is a deep-dive into what feature differences exist between MySQL/Percona Server/MariaDB/WebScaleSQL, how distributions package the various databases differently. Within the hour, you'll be informed about the past, the present, and hopefully be knowledgeable enough to know what to pick in the future. Note, there will also be coverage of the various trees around WebScaleSQL, like the Facebook tree, the Alibaba tree as well as the Twitter tree.

MySQL features missing in MariaDB Server. Here's an overview from the New York developer's Unconference in February 2018. This is primarily aimed at the developers, to decide what goes into MariaDB 10.4, as opposed to users. High level comparisons are made between MySQL 5.6/5.7 with of course MySQL 8.0 as well. Here's to ensuring MariaDB Server 10/310.4 has more "Drop-in" compatibility.

Slides presented at Percona Live Europe Open Source Database Conference 2019, Amsterdam, 2019-10-01. Imagine a world where all Wikipedia articles disappear due to a human error or software bug. Sounds unreal? According to some estimations, it would take an excess of hundreds of million person-hours to be written again. To prevent that scenario from ever happening, our SRE team at Wikimedia recently refactored the relational database recovery system. In this session, we will discuss how we backup 550TB of MariaDB data without impacting the 15 billion page views per month we get. We will cover what were our initial plans to replace the old infrastructure, how we achieved recovering 2TB databases in less than 30 minutes while maintaining per-table granularity, as well as the different types of backups we implemented. Lastly, we will talk about lessons learned, what went well, how our original plans changed and future work.

As many other companies that are not Facebook- or Google-sized, we have to do more with less both in terms of budget and our small number of Ops in order to serve the over 400 thousand requests per second and the 1200 million monthly users. We made several mistakes (and a few successes) along the road regarding architecture and hardware decisions, especially for the database-distributed components, storage model, hardware chosen, server size, technology adoption, etc. Now we want to share those with you.

In this tutorial we will take Mediawiki, one of the most popular open-source wiki applications, and we will use it to discuss schema and scalability design problems we suffered on Wikipedia. We will discuss how they were solved (or how we plan to solve them). Forget about basic normalization theory or performance promises made by vendors in an ideal world. All topics discussed will be based on *actual problems* found when trying to handle the infrastructure of one of the top 10 most popular websites. * Target audience: Developers using MySQL from any programming language; or system administrators, devops and architects in charge of the data model of its application * Requirements: Basic SQL. Ability to read PHP. Basic familiarity with how wikis/Wikipedia works. * Session dynamic: You are expected to contribute actively- it will not be a lecture format * Topics (practical cases): - Case #0: Pages and revisions - Case #2: Supporting 290 languages - Case #3: An abnormal denormalization - Case #4: Key-value system - Case #5: Revisions and deletions - Case #6: What's links here - Case #7: A large table - Case #8: Anecdotes: The ghost tables and Timestamps - Case #9: Slots https://www.percona.com/live/plam16/sessions/mysql-schema-design-practice

Tutorial delivered at Percona MySQL Conference Live London 2013. It doesn't matter what new SSD technologies appear, or what are the latest breakthroughs in flushing algorithms: the number one cause for MySQL applications being slow is poor execution plan of SQL queries. While the latest GA version provided a huge amount of transparent optimizations -specially for JOINS and subqueries- it is still the developer's responsibility to take advantage of all new MySQL 5.6 features. In this tutorial we will propose the attendants a sample PHP application with bad response time. Through practical examples, we will suggest step-by-step strategies to improve its performance, including: * Checking MySQL & InnoDB configuration * Internal (performance_schema) and external tools for profiling (pt-query-digest) * New EXPLAIN tools * Simple and multiple column indexing * Covering index technique * Index condition pushdown * Batch key access * Subquery optimization

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
