Why do we buy
magazines??
Uses and Gratification
- satisfying curiosity and general interest.
 Being up to date with all news and gossip surround you and around do world.
- learning; self-education.
 Being giving simple and rapped answers and opinions to you make decisions in
life.
- gaining a sense of security through knowledge Personal Identity.
 Able to gather information for confidence of knowledge and for development of
personal identity.
- finding reinforcement for personal values.
 Build confidence by seeing others relating to you or general compliments of your
values to reinforce your personal esteem.
- finding models of behaviour.
 Being given or discovering an ideal behaviour rule that suits you.
- identifying with valued other (in the media).
 Finding similarities of your values with those who are well known
- gaining insight into one's self.
 Having information that enables you to identify with your icon, some people have
this need to feel part of the current world. This need to belong is also referred to
in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory and I have identified it as important to my
target consumers.
Integration and Social Interaction
- gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy.
 To know accurate details of others circumstances, to feel
and relate to an understanding of their lifestyles.
- finding a basis for conversation and social interaction.
 Information gained can be used for interaction
and socialising.
- having a substitute for real-life companionship.
 Escapism, a feeling of belonging generated
through imaginary connections made with
elite people/celebrities.
- relaxing.
 The continuous content of “needed” information
would make the consumer feel valued and improve
their self-esteem, this is seen in the surplus energy
theory, which is reinforcing having a time of the day
without doing sedentary work, and use this time for
leisure (read magazine!).
This is needed to restore energy instead of using
excess energy.
Entertainment
- filling time.
 The amount of content would reasonable for filling time.
Leisure is important as it also includes the needs of
relaxation.
My magazine will include concerts/shows dates for
better leisure purpose (Emotional Participation).
I will try to include a quiz a way to engage the consumer
that involves mental effort (Active Participation), the
quiz would involve well known celebrities information
(gaining insight
into one's self).
I believe Simple amusement and entertainment would
be already arranged in the design and cover lines that
engage
the consumer from their first look.
- escaping, or being diverted, from problems.
 My magazine would give a relaxing experience and positive
influence rejecting current conflicts in the world.
- Emotional release.
 This could be seen in Celebrities
gossip which are usually exaggerated
to drag more attention for emotional
release.
- Sexual arousal.
 Things that would relate to the occasion would give people
sexual arousal such as women use of makeup to improve
their symmetry as well as to define their sexual appearance
– sex sells.
Laura Mulvey’s “The Male Gaze” it is
a theory that the media shows what
men in general are expecting to see
the female features which distinguish
gender. Women are seen as an object
by men, in my magazine I try to show
power towards women and will look
manlike as their iconic female
features will be disguised.
 Symmetry –can be associated with physical attractiveness, beauty, health and genetic fitness.
The face symmetry is analysed on how one half of your face matches the other in a in a vertical line.
Here is an example of a symmetric and a non-symmetric face.
I will try to make sure Nina’s face look as symmetrical as possible.
 Makeup (sexual arousal)
 Emotional release
 Filling time (good amount content)
 Not relate articles to current conflict for better escaping of the outside world.
 Factual information and strong opinions for better identification, social interaction and confidence of
knowledge.
 Reveal the insight of others for feeling belonged and better understand of identification.
After analysing these uses of Gratification I will try to include
most of them in my magazine.
