The document summarizes biographies of several famous horror film directors - Alfred Hitchcock, George Romero, John Carpenter, Dario Argento, and Wes Craven. It provides key details about each director's background and some of their most popular and well-known horror films. For each director, the document also outlines elements from their typical film styles and conventions that the author plans to incorporate into the opening sequence of their own horror film.
2. Alfred Hitchcock was a British director who was born on the 13th August 1899 and died in California,
united states on the 29th April 1980. He has known for directing many psychological thrillers, however
he has directed many popular horrors.
Alfred Hitchcock Directed over 50 featured films and he was regarded as the greatest British film
maker.
One of Hitchcock’s popular
and successful films is called
‘Psycho’ which is a
psychological horror. The
movie ‘Psycho’ was the most
profitable film of Hitchcock's
career, which made about $15
million by the end of the first
year.
What I will include in my opening
sequence:
Hitchcock is known for presenting himself to
the audience at the beginning of his films in
order to allow the audience to keep focus on
his storyline. Therefore in my opening
sequence, the editor will be the villain which
would allow our audience to feel closer to the
characters as well as the story line.
3. George Romero is a American-Canadian film director who was born on February 4,
1940. He is mainly known for directing gruesome horror films. Horror films
directed by Romero include:
-Night of the Living Dead (1968)
-Dawn of the Dead (1978)
-Day of the Dead (1985)
-Two evil eyes (1990)
-Dawn of the Dead (2004)
-Land of the Dead (2005)
-Diary of the Dead (2007)
-The Crazies (2010)
What I will include in my opening sequence:
George Romero’s horror films mainly feature
zombies. His films often features radio or television
news broadcasts playing in the background. They
also include many characters killing other
characters and mainly female characters. Therefore
in my opening sequence, I want only female
characters as this is typical of horror films.
4. John Carpenter is an American film director who was born on January 16th 1948. Although
John Carpenter has directed various films of different genres, the main films he has directed
consist of horror and science fiction. Horror films directed by Carpenter include:
- The Thing (1982)
-Halloween (1978)
-The Ward (2010)
-The Fog (1980)
-Vampires (1998)
-Prince of darkness (1987)
-Village of the Damned (1995)
-Christine (1983)
-Someone's watching me (1978)
What I will include in my opening sequence:
Although John Carpenter has directed many films with
different Genres, he is known for mainly directing
horror films. He is also known as ‘The Master of Horror’.
Carpenter uses synthesizer-based soundtracks that he
composes himself.
The words ‘John Carpenter’ appear after all of his films
and titles. Although he usually has male-lead characters
in his movies, I will do this differently and include
female characters throughout, specifically the main
character.
5. Dario Argento is an Italian film director, producer and screenwriter. He is mainly famous for
his work in the horror film genre. Dario Argento was born on September the 7th 1940.
Horror films directed by Argento:
The Phantom of Opera (1998)
-Do you like Hitchcock? (2005)
-Jenifer (2005)
-Trauma (1993)
-The bird with the crystal plumage
(1970)
What I will include in my opening sequence:
Argento usually uses close-up eyes, frequently
that of the killer. Similarly, I have used a lot of
close-up shots in my opening sequence of
both the protagonist and the antagonist.
Additionally, Argento frequently shoots his
film in Turin. I will use some of his trade marks
and film all of my opening sequence in
London.
6. Wes Craven was an American film director born on August 2nd 1939. He is known for many
horror films. His most popular film is Scream and A nightmare on Elm street. The rest of the
horror films he has directed include:
-Scream 4 (2011)
-Scream (1996)
- A nightmare on Elm street (1984)
-The last house on the left (1972)
-Scream 2 (1997)
-Scream 3 (2000)
-Cursed (2004)
-Dead friend (1986)
What I will include in my opening sequence:
Wes Craven is often known for his protagonists are
often ordinary characters caught in extraordinary
and horrific circumstances. I will do the same in my
opening sequence as I want my female protagonist
to be ordinary, however due to things happening in
the past, she will be possessed.
Similarly, in my opening sequence I will make sure
my protagonist is an ordinary character, who
becomes possessed by a villain.
