THRILLER DIRECTORS
ROBERT WIENE 
• Robert Wiene (27 April 1873–16 June 1938) was an important film director of the German 
silent cinema. Former stage actor, writer and director, graduate of Vienna University, who 
first worked in films from 1913. Had a reputation as a director of melodramas, before his 
making his most famous picture, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), which is considered 
one of the best examples of German expressionism. Wiene escaped Nazi persecution by 
seeking exile in France, where he died in 1938. 
He directed films such as: 
• ‘Fear’ (Thriller) 
• ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ (Thriller) 
• ‘The Hands of Orlac’ (Thriller) 
• ‘Genuine’ (Thriller)
ALFRED HITCHCOCK 
• Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE was an English film director and producer. He pioneered 
many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. Hitchcock used 
techniques such as ‘the dolly zoom’. For years after the film ‘Vertigo’ came out, directors 
started applying it into their own films such as Spielberg for “Jaws”. 
He directed films such as: 
• ‘Psycho’ (Horror/Mystery/Thriller) 
• ‘North By Northwest’ (Adventure/Mystery/Romance/Thriller) 
• ‘Vertigo’ (Mystery/Romance/Thriller) 
• ‘Rear Window’ (Mystery/Thriller)
STEVEN SPIELBERG 
• Steven Allan Spielberg is an American film director, screenwriter, film producer, video 
game designer and studio executive. Spielberg's films have covered many themes and 
genres. Spielberg's early science-fiction and adventure films were seen as an archetype 
of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. In later years, his films began addressing 
such issues as the Holocaust, slavery, war and terrorism. He is considered one of the 
most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He is also one of the founders of 
DreamWorks movie studio. 
Spielberg directed films such as: 
• ‘Jurassic Park’ (Thriller/Action) 
• ‘Jaws’ (Suspense Thriller)
TONY SCOTT 
• Tony Scott was a British-born film director and producer. He was asked by producers Don 
Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to direct Top Gun (1986) starring Tom Cruise. He 
followed the success of Top Gun with the sequel Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) with Eddie 
Murphy, which was well received. 
He directed films such as: 
• ‘Top Gun’ (Action Thriller)| 
• ‘Enemy of the State’ (Action Thriller/Crime Thriller/Political Thriller) 
• ‘Man on fire’ (Crime Thriller)
DAVID FINCHER 
• David Fincher has directed many famous films. He has lots of different trade marks and 
techniques that he uses in his films like the lighting schemes, composition of shots, and 
also the camera movement. Fincher often uses techniques such as attempted or 
successful suicide to end his films in a dark and disturbing manner, low-key lighting with 
green or blue tinted colour temperature and wide angle shots. 
He directed films such as: 
• ‘Fight Club’ (Psychological Thriller) 
• ‘Seven’ (Psychological Thriller)
