3. Social Media
RULES OF THE ROAD
Social media tools are always
changing.
“Getting on social media” is
not a marketing strategy.
Using social media will not
compensate for a bad product
or service.
The tools are (mostly) free –
but your time is not.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
4. The Myth We Were Sold
Step 1: Sign up for social media accounts.
Step 2: Post something.
Step 3: Watch the money roll in!!
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
5. Social Media Success Requires:
Dedication, diversified channels, dynamic content.
Getting out of our comfort zone.
Change of mindset.
Providing value.
Telling stories.
Using photos and videos.
Focusing on impact.
Eliminating silos.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
6. Twitter Is Still Popular
317 million monthly active users (Oct 2016)
1.3 billion registered Twitter accounts
120 million monthly visitors to Twitter
Daily active Twitter users – 100 million
Average number of followers – 208
34% of active Twitter users log
into it more than once per day

7. Twitter 101
“Twitter is an information network
made up of 140-character
messages called Tweets. It's an
easy way to discover the latest
news related to subjects you care
about.”
Twitter promotes itself as a news
and discovery social media
platform.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
8. Success On Twitter Involves:
Researching, creating, curating great content.
Always providing value to your followers.
Following and interacting with others.
Listening and participating in conversations.
Monitoring hashtags and topics.
Looking at your analytics and reporting ROI (return on
investment).
Constantly tweaking your strategy.

10. 1) Set Up Your Profile
Choose a great username: 15 characters or less – short
and sweet is better! Memorable is best.
Profile photo: Shown as the icon with every tweet you
post. Recommended 400x400 pixels.
Bio: 16o characters to tell people about you and your
business. Use emojis and hashtags to spice it up.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
11. 1) Set Up Your Profile
URL: Website link that is mobile accessible.
Header image: 1500x1500 pixels is ideal.
Pinned tweet: Pinned to the top of your profile.
Let’s take a look: www.twitter.com/JuliaCSocial
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
12. 2) Download the Mobile App
The mobile app is where the majority of people access
Twitter.
Check it out and play with the features to make yourself
comfortable with using it.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
14. 3) Understand Your Audience
You must have a target audience in mind.
Who will read your tweets?
What do I want these people to do?
Why am I on Twitter in the first place?
Before tweeting, always ask: Will my followers like this
and retweet it?
The more targeted and narrow you can be in defining
your audience, the better.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
15. 4) Choose a Primary Goal
Sample goals include:
Thought leadership/influence
Building trust with customers
Building a pipeline of prospects
Getting more website traffic
Raising awareness
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
17. 5) Follow Others
Twitter will suggest people for you to follow, once you
get started and follow a few accounts.
You can search for “people” by typing in your key words
and topic in the search bar.
The only way to build a following on Twitter (unless you
are a huge celebrity) is to follow others.
People get a notification when you follow them.
You can unfollow at any time and they will not get a
notification.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
19. 5) Follow Others
Who you follow and how many people you follow
should correlate with your primary goal.
Find and follow 10 people daily.
Lose the dead weight by using a
free app like Crowdfire –
choose “Inactive Following”
Do not buy followers!
1,000 engaged followers are better than
10,000 fake or uninterested followers.

@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
22. Terms To Know - @Reply
A public response to a Tweet via the @reply button.
@Replies show up in your home timeline and the

25. 6) Create Twitter Lists
Use Twitter lists to manage the chaos.
Lists are used for reading Tweets only.
You cannot send or direct a Tweet to an entire list.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
26. Twitter Lists
Subscribe to and follow
other Twitterer’s lists.
You can follow lists without
following each individual
account.
Create private and public
lists.
Use for events, networking,
influencers, news, trade
shows, etc.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
28. Terms To Know - Retweet

31. 7) Find the Right Conversations
Use the powerful Search bar!
Look at Moments.
See what’s Trending.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
33. What’s a Hashtag, anyway?
Any word or topic beginning with the # sign.
It becomes a hyperlink that you can click on to find all
the tweets using the same hashtag.
People use hashtags organize conversations around a
specific topic.
They are also great filters when you want to focus on a
specific issue or topic and cut out the other tweets.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
34. Hashtags
Clicking on a hashtag takes you to
search results for that term.
Great for events, specific
products, news, timely
announcements.
Trending hashtags reflect with
people on Twitter are discussing.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
35. Unique Campaign Hashtags
You can use your own hashtag if you have a specific
campaign to promote.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr

44. 9) Start Tweeting!
Steps to Success: Creating and Curating
Creating – sharing your own original stuff
Curating – finding the best stuff to share with your
audience
The best Twitter accounts do BOTH.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
45. How Much To Tweet?
It depends on you – your interest in Twitter and your
love (or hate) of it.
There is no hard and fast rule, but usually once per day
is enough to keep your account up-to-date.
ALWAYS share relevant, valuable, pertinent, up-to-
the-minute information!
ALWAYS think of your ideal Twitter follower – who do
you want following you? What do they like to see on
Twitter?
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr

Hootsuite – www.hootsuite.com
Can set time zones and automatically schedule tweets
in a queue.
Can schedule tweets to go out at specific dates and
times.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
57. But Please Stop Automating!
Each social media platform should be looked at like it’s
own country.
Different rules, language, etiquette, and best practices.
STOP posting your Facebook post links to Twitter!
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
58. 10) Participate in a TweetChat
TweetChats are a fantastic way to build a following and
get great content.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr

59. How to Participate in a TweetChat
Follow their rules! Each TweetChat is different.
Listen and pay attention at the beginning. Do not just
jump in until they say go.
If you are ambitious, look at transcripts of old chats.
Introduce yourself, but no hard selling.
Answer the questions asked using their format – A1
Connect with individual accounts during and after the
TweetChat.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
60. Advanced: Explore Paid Ads
You can use Twitter ads to promote a specific tweet,
promote your account to get more followers, or promote
a hashtag.
You can create specific audiences for each ad, based on
demographics, geography, interests, and more.
Choose your Call to Action and go from there – what do
you want people to do when they see the ad? Consider
that a majority of them are using Twitter from their
phone.
@JuliaCSocial #TweetEC @EnterpriseCtr
