Ano ba ‘yang strategy?
   Sa kahit ano’ng larangan kung saan may tunggalian ng mga manlalaro—
   tennis, chess, billiards, negosyo— ang panalo ay napupunta sa kung sino
     man ang mas matalas ang isip, mahusay magplano at mas magaling
         maglaro    (outthink, outplan, and outplay)
       Iyang “thinking, planning, and implementation” ay puwede nang
    kahulugan ng “strategy” o diskarte. Halimbawa si Pacquiao, sa isisp pa
   lang ay kinikinita na niya ang laban, (visualizes the game) paplanuhin na
     niya ang mga kumbinasyong gagamitin, at susubukang kontrolin ang
                    laban ayon sa kanyang nauna nang plano.


The same holds true with the chess master, video-arcade addict and
the corporate executive. Lalo naman sa basketball, sa billiards, sa
paboritong laro ng pinoy: POLITICS! Hehehe!

MAJOR OBSTACLES TO
                 STRATEGIC THINKING
•   People see the future profile from their own perspectives and
    functions. Thus, there’s no single vision driving the
    company/organization. (kanya-kanya’ng pananaw kaya kanya-
    kaniyang diskarte = sabog)

•   Operational thinking dominates management’s time. Managers spend
    time putting out fires instead of designing the future. (basta kung ano
    ang “urgent” ‘yun na lang ang inuuna. Day-to-day na lang ang tirada)

•   Focused on operational issues, managers let outside forces—
    governments/competitors/even clients—shape the company’s
    strategy. (kung saan dalhin ng hangin ng pagkakataon)

•   No crisis, no strategy. When times are good, who needs to think about
    where they are going? (bakit, hindi naman sira, bakit mo aayusin?)

Three Deadly Attitudes:
   • short term orientation. Since the drive to maximize
     short-term gains robs long-term development needs
     and prevents an organization from creating or
     exploiting opportunities, organizations can only
     create excellence when they replace short-term
     needs with long-term development and well-being.

Basta hulihin ko na mga isda habang meron, bahala na bukas ‘pag naubos yan! Putulin ko na ‘yang
bakawan, magandang panggatong kesa iba naman ang makinabang! Ay, hindi naman yan matatapos.
Naku, kelan pa tutubo mga punong ‘yan? Sige, tanggapin na ‘yang offer kahit mura at least kita na ‘yan

Ang mababaw mag-isip, hindi nakikita ang impact ng desisyon o aksyon sa maraming bagay. Maiisip lang
niya, ‘pag pinindot ko dito gagalaw doon’—at hanggang dun na lang ang kaya niyang abutin. Hindi na niya
 itutuloy “at pag gagalaw doon, tatamaan diyan at malalaglag din ito, etc.” Samantala, ang malalim mag-
                   isip nakikita ang buong “chain of impacts” o ‘yung kabuuang larawan




    • shallow thinking. Too much concentration on
      dousing the flames of daily crisis can drain the
      executive’s reservoir of creative energy and result in
      superficial or shallow thinking. Good business
      requires deep thinking and deep thinking only comes
      from a commitment to success. (MASYADONG

MAHILIG SA SHORTCUT. Dahil masyadong umaasa sa mababaw na pag-iisip, marami
ang naghahanap ng pinaka-mura at madaling solusyon kaysa may kamahalan pero
dekalidad namang solusyon.




       quick-fix expectations. An over reliance on shallow
     thinking leads many to look for cheap and easy, rather
       than costly and difficult, solutions. Ignoring serious
     problems by providing temporary relief for symptoms
      can eventually aggravate rather than eradicate pain.

• Malinaw na nakalatag ang purpose ng organization.
• May realistic goals na consistent sa mission na nakapaloob sa
  nakatalagang panahon at akma sa kapasidad ng organization na
  magsakatuparan (implement)
• Malinaw na ipinaalam sa buong organisasyon ang diskarte para lahat ay
  iisa ang kumpas
• May sense of ownership/pagmamay-ari sa lahat ng antas ng
  organisasyon (bricklayers vs. cathedral builders).

•   Focuses the organization’s resources on key priorities.
•   Provides a base from which progress can be measured.
•   Brings together everyone’s best, in the board level and the staff
•   Provides the glue that binds the organization together
•   Produces great satisfaction around a common vision
•   Increases productivity from increased climate change and effectiveness

CHARACTERISTICS OF A
                     GOOD STRATEGIC PLAN

• Lends itself to Good Execution and Implementation…
   – Involves people responsible for implementing the plan.
   – Uses cross-functional teams to ensure collaboration.
   – Is honestly realistic.
   – Is broken down into smaller action plans
   – Specifies who is doing what and by when
   – Schedules regular reviews of implementation
   – Translates the strategic plan’s actions into personnel
     performance objectives.
   – Has the chief executive’s support -- the major driver of the
     plan’s implementation. Plan’s goals and objectives are in the
     chief executive’s performance objectives

• Kinabukasang Pinakaaasam-asam. A desirable state. An
  ideal state.
• Itsura ng bukas, na gawa sa pinagtagpi-tagping
  katotohanan ng kasalukuyan, mga pangarap, panaginip,
  mga pagkakataon at kasama din ang mga hadlang o
  panganib
• An enduring goal; and image of what one wants himself
  and by extension his organization to be. Matibay at
  walang hanggang pinupuntirya; isang larawan ng kung
  ano talaga ang gusto para sa sarili, kayat damay na ang
  kanyang organisasyon.

Purpose Of A Vision:
• Nagbibigay ng mas malaking pakay, kahulugan at

• Naglilinaw at naglalatag ito ng estilo at paraan ng

CHARACTERISTICS OF VISION:
 Result of creative thinking/ Bunga ng malikhaing pag-iisip
 Does not consider present realities/ Hindi nakapako o naka-kahon

 Describes who we are, where we are, what we do and how we do
  it
 Gives a consistent sense of who the individual is and what he is

KEY ELEMENTS OF A VISION
A vision is a statement of how the organization will look in the future. It:
   Nakaka-antig ng puso at kaluluwa

   Nag-uugnay sa mga nakaukit na usapin at pangangailangan

   Nagdidiin sa kung anuman ang gusto nating magkakasama na gawin,
    buhayin at palawakin

   Bagay na talagang sulit pag-ubusan ng oras/panahon

   Nagbibigay kahulugan sa trabahong ginagawa ng mga tao sa isang
    organisasyon.

   Simple (pero ROCK!)

   Isang buhay na dokumento na pwede namang baguhin sa pagtakbo ng
    panahon

   Dito nagsisimula ang paglawak at paglalim ng mga ispesipikong bagay
                                                                      .

   Sanhi ng 2 malalim na pangangailangan ng tao: Kalidad at
    Pagpupursige

FORMULATING
                 THE VISION STATEMENT
 WHO WE ARE…(sino ba tayo?)
 Naglalarawan sa mga taong bumubuo sa ating liga (team/group),
  mga taglay na galing at kaalaman at kung paano
  nakikita/napapansin ng iba.
 WHERE WE ARE (nasaan tayo?)
 Naglalarawan sa larangan ng negosyo, labanan o laro, ang posisyon
  ng grupo sa loob ng malaki o maliit mang organisasyon, o hambing
  sa iba pang grupo/organisasyon at lokasyon.
 WHAT WE DO (saan tayo magaling?)
 Naglalarawan sa natatanging responsibilidad, serbisyo, at pagkilos ng
  grupo
 HOW WE DO IT (paano tayo kumilos?)
 Naglalarawan sa mga teknolohiya o klase ng kaalamang gamit, paano
  binubuo ang organisasyon at ang katangi-tanging kilos, galaw, ugaling
  sinusunod ng mga kasapi nito.

A strategic plan usually focuses on the entire organization. Here are some

• GOALS-BASED PLANNING is the most common and starts with

    Organization’s mission (and vision and/or values to work toward the

   Ilarawan dito ang mga gawaing pinangungunahan/pinagkakatanyagan ng inyong
    barangay sa kabuhayan, sa kultura, sa kahandaan sa mga sakuna at sa iba pang
    pagpapataas ng antas ng buhay.

   KUNG PAANO NAMIN GAWIN--ANG AMING PAGPAPAHALAGA (CORE
    VALUES)
   Ilarawan dito ang mga teknolohiyang ginagamit, kung paano ang pagkakabuo (istruktura)
    at kung anu-ano ang pangkalahatang pagpapahalaga (core values)

     nakakatibay, alisto tayo sa hagupit ng buhay. Kayang-kaya basta may Balayong tinapay!

Conceptualized during a UNICEF engagement , refined during his ATS MBA course
What it means:
                                    TUMAMA KA

To the urbanite, it could mean something like:


        • WINNING A BET--that the informal sector is bankable
        for example--or that the local indigenous tribe isn't
        interested in gaining access to basic services such as
        education and health--or a bet that, hey, it IS worth it to
        include them into the planning and implementation of
        community affairs.
What it means:
                  TUMAMA KA



To the general public, it could mean, literally,
"MAKE YOURSELF RIGHT" or present an
opportunity to right some wrongs. It could also
mean, right on target.
What it means:
                  TUMAMA KA


BUT ON THE GROUND, on the field itself where
one may wish to conduct the participatory
community appraisal, we find the application of
TUMAMA KA during the stakeholders’ situation
analysis, right there in the drawing out of the
tribe/community's story and the effective telling
or sharing of local drama unfolding before the
community's eyes.
TUKLAS                                          (DISCOVERY)
– done through a combination of activities, mostly during an “umpukan”
  or using what WorldBank calls the BOPSAT (Bunch of People Sitting at a
  Table) technique.

– Filipinos have regular umpukans both formal and informal.

   • There is formal pulong-barangay or barangay meeting

   • or the “inuman” or social drinking sessions where the men /leaders of the
     community come together for fellowship (samahan).
            » Bringing food like “pulutan” is always welcome .
            » nowadays, people are not really expected to drink, if they know you do
               not drink.
            » Just join in the kuwentuhan (exchange of stories), laugh at the jokes and
               of course, look interested and respectful.
            » Careful observation will net a glimpse into the local power-dynamics of
               the umpukan.

(kung saan dalhin ng hangin ng pagkakataon) • No crisis, no strategy. When times are good, who needs to think about where they are going? Since the drive to maximize short-term gains robs long-term development needs and prevents an organization from creating or exploiting opportunities, organizations can only create excellence when they replace short-term needs with long-term development and well-being. Ignoring serious problems by providing temporary relief for symptoms can eventually aggravate rather than eradicate pain.
