Why raise goats?
• Goats have been a good companion to
small farmers since the early days of
history.
• well adapted to the tropics
• good complement to small farm
production
• meat (chevon), milk , skin, and
droppings/manure as a fertilizer

What is halal goat production? It is the concept of producing goats from “farm to plate”.
Ask: Who among you are raising goats?
Why do you raise goats? Ask five participants.
1. Most raisers are smallholders or into small scale production, however, more and more are going into commercial scale because of the demand for halal goats.
2. Tethering – goats are tied to a rope 6-10 m long.
Raising goats under established plantations of coconut, tamarind, mango where plantation undergrowths, mainly grasses, weeds and legumes can be used as feeds.
Tell the participants: You have given various reasons why people raise goats. Let us summarize them.
If their answers are not in the slide, mention all answers raised aside from those in the list.
Then before going to the next slide, tell the participants that there are advantages in raising goats.
Ask 3-5 participants what advantages can they get from raising goats.
Summarize the answers. Expound what is written, not just read it. The explanations per item are as follows:
Small investment: as such the risk of loss is also small, making goat farming an attractive proposition among rural farm families.
Thrive even on browse alone : because they can digest feed materials high in cellulose more efficiently.
Crop-based farming system – goat raising can be can be integrated in mango plantation, rubber plantation. Manure can be utilized as fertilizer for their crops.
Emphasize the possibility that the goats might eat the bark of the trees which might damage the main crop and can possibly lead to the death of the trees.
Chevon or the meat of goat is very popular specially amongst Muslims.
Inherent advantages include the following:
Mature earlier than cattle - about 8 months
Short gestation period – average of 150 days
Bred early – as early as 8 months
Short kidding interval – because of this inherent advantage, production of meat and milk can be increased in relatively short time
1. Tell the farmers that in any livestock venture, there are constraints.
2. When you deal with farmers, tell them the truth. When you give the constraints in goat raising, you should tell that there are more advantages in goat raising so that they will not be discouraged to raise goats.
3. Explain the constraints
Lack of and high cost of quality breeder stock but there are researches that are being done to produce high quality breeder stocks
High mortality rate in kids ( 0-3 months because this is the most critical stage in the life of a goat because of their susceptibility to diseases.
Endoparasistim – tell them that you will discuss about this problem in the topic :good management practices
Absence of a defined breeding program: there are already institutions doing breeding activities
Socioeconomic problems : lack of institutional credit facilities (but Landbank is now already provide loans as capital); undefined marketing systems
Also emphasize that if they raise goats, they should not let their animals roam around the neighborhood as they might eat the plants of their neighbors.
Transition from this slide to the next: IF THERE ARE CONSTRAINTS IN GOAT PRODUCTION THERE ARE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES AND A BRIGHT PROSPECT. Ask the participants “ what can be the opportunities in raising goats?” - get some answers then go to the next slide
You can say: Yes, there are lot of constraints but there are also a lot of opportunities. (this is what the farmers will really be interested in)
Then explain
High demand – during Muslim festivals (Kanduli, Eidl Fitr, etc); give statistics like in a barangay, how many families are expected to slaughter goats during the festivals.
You could ask what is slaughtered during kanduli? Share also that Lisa’s Tender Meats need 30 goats per day but the stocks are limited and so this is very encouraging for farmers to raise more goats because of the demand.
For the assignment of the lecturer (as a support to your explanation): survey some supermarkets in the area about the demand and share the statistics to the farmers
You can also cite the Qur’an on the Aqiqah, that when a child is born, a goat should be slaughtered.
You can ask how chevon is prepared? How many do you think will prefer to eat this kind of food if it is available?
2. Price increases every year – it now costs 195 per kilo. Because of the high demand
3. Ask: why do people like to eat goat meat? - Low cholesterol content
4. Niche market for goat’s milk – there is a defined market for goat’s milk.
- You can tell them the goat’s milk is highly digestible compared to cow’s milk. Babies who are allergic to cow’s milk are given goat’s milk.
- goat’s milk is now increasingly used in the manufacture of beauty products (lotion, soap, etc) because of its high Vitamin A content
-you could say that there is a potential market for goat’s milk
- the prospects and opportunities can be categorized if short-term or long-term
6. Technologies developed by government and non-government institutions are very much available.
- Government support – explain about the regular services of DAF : health management (free services to goat and cattle farmers – deworming, farm visits upon request by the farmer, free drugs and medicines, vaccination), provision of planting materials
BUT: Do not give any promises.
- Opportunity – creation of other industries (roadside eateries, etc with demand for goats)
Compare chevon (goat meat) to other meats and highlight the fact that the nutritional value of goat meat is becoming increasingly important in the health management of people. Not only is goat meat lower in total fat and cholesterol, but it is also lower in saturated fats than traditional meats.
Iron is high compared to other meats. Iron is very important for the circulatory system.
In addition, goat meat also contains higher potassium content with lower sodium levels.
Goat meat offers more nutritional value, greater health benefits, and is an ideal choice to be considered as "the other red meat.“
As the health benefits of goat’s meat becomes more widely known among the general population, the demand for alternative low-fat red meat should also continue to increase.
