3. 1. WHAT IS ENERGY?
Energy is the ability to do work
There are many types of energy
Without an energy source, we can’t
do any work
4. 2. ENERGY TYPES and ENERGY
SOURCES
Energy types son los distintos tipos
de energía que existen y que
podemos experimentar
Energy sources: son las fuentes
naturales de las que podemos
extraer los distintos tipos de energía
5. 3. TYPES OF ENERGY
There are seven types of energy
1. Nuclear: from the atom’s nuclei
2. Chemical: from chemical reactions
3. Electric: from the electrons
4. Heat: from high temperatures
5. Light: from electromagnetic radiation
6. Kinetic: from things in motion
7. Potential: from the gravity
7. CONSERVATION OF ENERGY
PRINCIPLE
ENERGY CAN’T BE CREATED.
ENERGY CAN’T BE DESTROYED.
ENERGY CAN ONLY BE
TRANSFORMED
8. 3. ACTIVITY
1. Battery: it transforms chemichal energy into
electric energy
2. Light bulb:
3. Solar cell:
Write down what type of electric transformation
4. A car:
takes place in these devices.
5. A person working:
6. An electric fan:
7. A gas oven:
8. A Computer screen:
9. 4. ENERGY IN TECHNOLOGY
All the machines need energy to work.
In technology, the most useful type of
energy is electric energy, for three
reasons:
1.Electricity is easy to generate
2.Electricity is easy to transform
3.Electricity is easy to transport
14. RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
These energies come from the nature
We can assume that they will exist forever
Renewable energies are good for the
environment, don’t pollute and never run
out.
Renewable energies are: …………
15. NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY
SOURCES
These energies come from limited
resources
We know that these energies are going to
run out
Non-renewable energies are bad for the
environment, pollute, and will not last
forever.
Non-renewable energies are: ……………
16. THE ENERGY PROBLEM
Can you imagine a future without electric energy?

17. THE ENERGY PROBLEM
80% of our energy consumption comes
from non-renewable sources
We use fossil fuels for electricity and
transportation (cars, ships, aeroplanes, …)
ACTIVITY: Write down three
consequences if tomorrow we didn’t have
any electricity at all.
18. THE ENERGY PROBLEM
Nor the Canary Islands, nor Spain have
fossil fuels
We have to buy the fuel to foreign
countries. This causes two problems:
1. We have to pay any price for it.
2. We depend on the other country to get the
fuel.
