2. INTRODUCTION
This week I have researched 4 key jobs roles within the production of a
newspaper. The roles I consider most important are Editor, Reporter,
Designer and Marketing Manager.
3. EDITOR
responsible for overall content of the paper, makes sure everything
runs to plan and has the final say on what appears in the paper.
Some paper organisations may have an editor in each type of field,
such as sports, politics etc. These are called sub editors, these are in
charge of the small team that research within their field.
Newspaper and magazine editors manage the style and content of
printed publications. You may oversee the overall editorial direction of
a publication, or you can be responsible for an individual section.
4. EDITOR’S WORK ACTIVITIES
Depending on the publication you work for as an editor, you may:
commission articles.
choose articles that will be included in the publication.
decide how they will be laid out for publishing.
consider submissions for inclusion from freelance journalists, photographers
and illustrators.
You will work with sub-editors, designers, production staff and printers to
make sure that publication deadlines are met.
On a local newspaper you may help to write and sub-edit the publication,
while on larger titles your role may be purely editorial. You can also have
responsibility for other matters such as budget control, hiring staff and
working with advertising and production departments.
5. REPORTER
obtains information and writes stories. May cover all types of stories or
may be a specialist who is concerned with a specific area of the news,
such as sport or crime.
6. DESIGNER
designs layouts that are attractive and accessible to the reader while
maintaining the look and identity of the newspaper.
7. MARKET MANAGING
has overall responsibility for all advertising within the newspaper.
There are two main types of adverts: display adverts - for products, with
photographs and graphics, placed by business and classified adverts –
smaller adverts in columns, covering jobs, courses, holidays and
announcements.
