Poverty in America
Have you ever lived without enough money to support yourself? Last year, 13.2 percent of
people in the United States did not have enough money to support themselves or their families. 1
in 7 people were at risk of suffering from hunger in the United States, as well as 3.5 million people
that were forced to sleep in parks, under bridges, in shelters or cars. In this paper, you will learn about
poverty's history in America and its definition, the causes/reasons of poverty, the effects of poverty
on America, and the salaries of people in poverty.
Poverty is the state or condition of having little to no money or goods. In America, poverty started
being a major issue in the late 1950s when it reached 22.4 percent of the American population.

The cost of healthcare and insurance has risen drastically over the past and can now cost a family
up to $8000 per year. For families living in poverty, this cost can be difficult for them to pay. For
families or individuals in poverty that lack health insurance, a sudden illness, chronic disease, or
accident will be devastating. If something were to happen to someone in poverty, it would be very
difficult to pay the expenses of the healthcare they went through, which could, in turn, make them
poorer than they already were. All of these causes must have an effect on the American society
somehow.
The effects of poverty in America are very serious as well as creating a great impact on American
society. Children who grow up in poverty suffer more persistent, frequent, and severe health
problems than children who grow up with a better financial circumstance. Many infants that have
been born into a poor family have low birth weights, which are associated with many preventable
mental and physical disabilities. Also, Children raised in poverty tend to miss school more often
because of illness since they are not living in very suitable environments. Child abuse as well as
elder abuse have been linked to people who have recently lost jobs or are in poverty. This is all
caused by stress, which has been proven to be more frequent in poorer

Poverty in America Essay
Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to
survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job,
a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not
knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can
effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to
overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be
done to stop it. The Federal Government defines poverty as income that falls below the United States
Poverty threshold. (Begun 95). If a person...show more content...
In 1935 the government started the Social Security Act which gave workers benefits if they were
fired or forced to quit their job. It also gave benefits to disabled workers.(Cooper 978 In the 1990's
America saw more poverty than ever before. The increase in the manufacturing business helped by
creating more jobs for workers. These workers then received benefits from working.(Cooper 981).
The lowest level of poverty was recorded in 1973 with only 11.1 percent of America living at or
below the poverty line. In America at that time there were twenty–three million people falling into
this category. Today there are still about thirty–six million people considered poor. This is almost
fourteen percent of the population. The big cities saw a bigger decline also. Nebraska was one of
thirteen states in 1995 that had poverty rates below ten percent. The majority of the nation except
Hawaii and Idaho, had falling poverty rates. The United States as a whole had a poverty rate of
about 13.8 percent in 1995.(Poverty Rates 8). There are four types of poverty. The four main
types of poverty are class, regional, cyclical and case. The types of poverty are different with
everyone who is considered poor. The first type of poverty, class, refers to social classes. This is a
low status compared to the rest of the nation. Ethnic customs and laws usually cause this. Ethnic

Poverty In America
"One out of every seven children will be born into poverty in the United States" ("Poverty in the
US"). People are not aware of the poverty in America, but the United States has one of the highest
poverty rates in the world. Many of the reasons for this issue is a lack of available jobs, low wages
and barriers to employment. A primary issue is the lack of information onpoverty. People need to be
able to know where to go to obtain information on this issue. The media is not covering poverty
enough so the people in America can not be informed of what the nation is going through. In the
United States, the poverty rate has continued to slowly rise throughout the years, which greatly
affects a family's lifestyle and even worse, a child's future, due to people not knowing what to do
about the problem. The origin of poverty can be traced back into the 1900s. From the 1950s to the
1970s, the poverty rate was almost zero due to the economy booming and businesses expanding.
However, towards the 21st century, about one in ten Americans were in poverty. The reason for this
is the oil crisis in the 1970s. The oil crisis creates a massive recession between 1973–1975. The oil
crisis forced companies to keep wages high so they had to maintain profit by firing workers. At the
same time, companies were unable to stimuli demands because they were unable to lower the wage
prices. Due to the fact that the prices were high, consumers were unable to purchase any goods and

poverty in america
Poverty has always been with us from beggars outside the gates of Jerusalem to the mentally ill
homeless woman in the park. America is known for our huge difference in culture and class. This is
due partly to the dynamics behind the political decisions of this country. The president himself
admits that America is more unequal than it's been since the great depression and many of his own
supporters say he has failed. America now has, by many standards, the lowest social mobility of all
of the high–end countries, meaning that a child born into poverty is likely to grow up as a poor adult.
This is surprising for a country that not only prides itself as being a middle class society, but as the
society where anyone can make it and where...show more content...
Neighborhoods that are organized around work where significant percentage of the adults is
working are significantly different from neighborhoods that are jobless, which are
neighborhoods that include a significant percentage of people that are not working. Jobless
neighborhoods are a lot more dangerous because they create and breed other problems like crime,
gang formation, and drug trafficking. (Iceland, 2012) This leads back to the continuing issue
with America's lack of social mobility. It seems that once one person is in poverty, it becomes a
vicious cycle and no one is willing to do anything to help. That's why poverty is passed down to
the same races and the same classes because they get stuck in that predicament. There are 50 million
Americans without health insurance. (Iceland, 2012) This does not help our problem with poverty.
America is a country that deals with problems as they come and never with preventing them. Those
that are born into a poor family almost always end up the head of a poor family. This fact has
shaped America and has almost made it impossible for those that are born into less fortunate homes.
Dealing with Poverty
The facts are as stands; if a person was to walk down the streets in any which neighborhood in
America, 1 out of every 6 people passed could be living in poverty. This issue is rarely talked about
for these outstanding numbers. Each year the number of poverty in America goes up. The new poor
are the former middle class,

Poverty In The United States Essay
Abstract The issue of poverty in the United States seems to lie on the grounds of race education and
family structure. As expected I found that educational levels paralleled poverty levels. Unexpected ,
research was found to prove that race did in fact play a substantial role in poverty. Family structure
along with other influential factors either locked an individual into poverty or provided a means for
escape from the continuing cycle. Other factors contributing to poverty was the location of homes or
neighborhoods and the accessibility to better paying jobs.
Introduction
It's hard to believe in a country as wealthy as the United States, that we have the problem of poverty.
Poverty has not become a recent problem of our...show more content...
Teacher bias towards impoverished individuals could also factor heavily on the academic
performances of a child. Disadvantaged students are seen as being " discriminated against by
teachers" (Dotts, 53).
Poverty and Family Structure Family structure is important for developing stability for a child. Its is
also a factor in the way a child will themselves feel about the institution of marriage. Likewise,
children from В‘non–normal' households are more likely to develop В‘nonnormative' attitudes
towards family life. The divorce rates among the impoverished are higher than those of other classes.
Higher than that are the divorce rates of African–Americans of the impoverished class. Rector states
that "blacks have higher poverty rates, mainly because blacks have lower marriage rates"(Rector, 27
).
Poverty and Race Race is commonly associated with poverty. It was found that "black and Hispanic
family income has been approximately 60 percent of white median family income. Interestingly it
was also discovered that their net worth was approximately one–tenth that of whites"(Squires and
Kubrin , 51 ). Race can play a pivotal role in getting home loans and locations of neighborhoods in
which you buy a home. Segregation still plays a major role in poverty.
Conclusion
Poverty is a vicious cycle that inevitably affects future generations. By breaking the cycle of poverty
with education, better government

Essay on Poverty in America
The Background of Poverty in America In the United States today there are many reforms that had
been made to help cope with those who are living in poverty. However, these reforms have been
keeping many from being able to climb the social class ladder because the "War on Poverty" has not
been effective on ridding poverty in the U.S. According to the Heritage Foundation, there are about
forty six million people who are living in poverty and it is a conflict in this country because it puts
people of lower class at a disadvantage because they have to choose between necessities like
healthcare, child care and food in order to help themselves and their family members; therefore,
many sacrifices have to be made to insure their survival. Though...show more content...
Since 1964, President Johnson declared an "unconditional war against poverty" in his State of the
Union. The Johnson Administration passed many reforms such as the Social Security Act, Food
Stamp Act, Economic Opportunity Act, and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to aid
the 19% who were suffering through poverty at that time and these reforms were able to help
lower poverty rates in the U.S to 11.1% for the next decade (Raab, 2013). Though many of these
reforms were able to help the lower class, the reforms were unable to keep up with the increasing
standard of living. Under President Obama, the U.S still uses these reforms that were passed under
the Johnson administration. From his first term, President Obama has been on the issue of poverty
in America and has promised many he would help the lower class improve their economic
conditions. Nevertheless, the talks Obama gives on this issue has demonstrated little rhetorical
leadership and has only emphasized issues related to poverty which makes him similar to past
presidents. Today about 14.6 percent of the population (Raab,2013) are still living in poverty and
this pressing issue will not change if presidents continue to direct people on what to do about
poverty, change would not be made. Instead, presidents should facilitate this problem because there
needs to be more drastic changes that will help the lower class.
Conflict Theory Conflict theory was first introduced by Karl Marx who saw that class

Poverty In America
Today, there are millions of Americans in poverty. How come America is one of the wealthiest
countries yet millions of people are impoverished? Poverty is considered one of the leading
problems in America. In "Changing the Face of Poverty" written by Diana George, American
nonprofit groups are showing poverty the wrong way in our country. Nonprofit organizations, for
example, "Habitat for Humanity" shows how we perceive a weak nation, and terrible people look
since they don't have a home. I believe America has a problem with helping the less fortunate,
because the expenses and cost of owning a house are so high, many people's general needs may
have to be sacrificed. Imagine not having food to eat every day, fresh clothes to wear, a car, the list
goes on and on. Our country is supposed to aid yet it seems like the U.S. just puts this issue to the
side. The amount of poverty stricken areas in America ranks much higher than the amount of poverty
in other nations. Most people living in poverty don't live in the rough and tough living conditions
that the media paints them too, but it is still hard for them to make ends meet. I think the amount of
poverty in the United States need to be decreased.
Firstly, the cause of poverty is varied. Even though a person might have a job, the money that they
make might not be enough to sustain himself or a family. Usually homeless Americans are
discriminated against, shunned from society, denied chances, and even jobs. A key factor for

It seems that once one person is in poverty, it becomes a vicious cycle and no one is willing to do anything to help. That's why poverty is passed down to the same races and the same classes because they get stuck in that predicament. There are 50 million Americans without health insurance. (Iceland, 2012) This does not help our problem with poverty. America is a country that deals with problems as they come and never with preventing them. Those that are born into a poor family almost always end up the head of a poor family. This fact has shaped America and has almost made it impossible for those that are born into less fortunate homes. Dealing with Poverty The facts are as stands; if a person was to walk down the streets in any which neighborhood in America, 1 out of every 6 people passed could be living in poverty. This issue is rarely talked about for these outstanding numbers. Each year the number of poverty in America goes up. The new poor are the former middle class, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Poverty In The United States Essay Abstract The issue of poverty in the United States seems to lie on the grounds of race education and family structure. As expected I found that educational levels paralleled poverty levels. Unexpected , research was found to prove that race did in fact play a substantial role in poverty. Family structure along with other influential factors either locked an individual into poverty or provided a means for escape from the continuing cycle. Other factors contributing to poverty was the location of homes or neighborhoods and the accessibility to better paying jobs. Introduction It's hard to believe in a country as wealthy as the United States, that we have the problem of poverty. Poverty has not become a recent problem of our...show more content... Teacher bias towards impoverished individuals could also factor heavily on the academic performances of a child. Disadvantaged students are seen as being " discriminated against by teachers" (Dotts, 53). Poverty and Family Structure Family structure is important for developing stability for a child. Its is also a factor in the way a child will themselves feel about the institution of marriage. Likewise, children from В‘non–normal' households are more likely to develop В‘nonnormative' attitudes towards family life. The divorce rates among the impoverished are higher than those of other classes. Higher than that are the divorce rates of African–Americans of the impoverished class. Rector states that "blacks have higher poverty rates, mainly because blacks have lower marriage rates"(Rector, 27 ). Poverty and Race Race is commonly associated with poverty. It was found that "black and Hispanic family income has been approximately 60 percent of white median family income. Interestingly it was also discovered that their net worth was approximately one–tenth that of whites"(Squires and Kubrin , 51 ). Race can play a pivotal role in getting home loans and locations of neighborhoods in which you buy a home. Segregation still plays a major role in poverty. Conclusion Poverty is a vicious cycle that inevitably affects future generations. By breaking the cycle of poverty with education, better government Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on Poverty in America The Background of Poverty in America In the United States today there are many reforms that had been made to help cope with those who are living in poverty. However, these reforms have been keeping many from being able to climb the social class ladder because the "War on Poverty" has not been effective on ridding poverty in the U.S. According to the Heritage Foundation, there are about forty six million people who are living in poverty and it is a conflict in this country because it puts people of lower class at a disadvantage because they have to choose between necessities like healthcare, child care and food in order to help themselves and their family members; therefore, many sacrifices have to be made to insure their survival. Though...show more content... Since 1964, President Johnson declared an "unconditional war against poverty" in his State of the Union. The Johnson Administration passed many reforms such as the Social Security Act, Food Stamp Act, Economic Opportunity Act, and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to aid the 19% who were suffering through poverty at that time and these reforms were able to help lower poverty rates in the U.S to 11.1% for the next decade (Raab, 2013). Though many of these reforms were able to help the lower class, the reforms were unable to keep up with the increasing standard of living. Under President Obama, the U.S still uses these reforms that were passed under the Johnson administration. From his first term, President Obama has been on the issue of poverty in America and has promised many he would help the lower class improve their economic conditions. Nevertheless, the talks Obama gives on this issue has demonstrated little rhetorical leadership and has only emphasized issues related to poverty which makes him similar to past presidents. Today about 14.6 percent of the population (Raab,2013) are still living in poverty and this pressing issue will not change if presidents continue to direct people on what to do about poverty, change would not be made. Instead, presidents should facilitate this problem because there needs to be more drastic changes that will help the lower class. Conflict Theory Conflict theory was first introduced by Karl Marx who saw that class Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Poverty In America Today, there are millions of Americans in poverty. How come America is one of the wealthiest countries yet millions of people are impoverished? Poverty is considered one of the leading problems in America. In "Changing the Face of Poverty" written by Diana George, American nonprofit groups are showing poverty the wrong way in our country. Nonprofit organizations, for example, "Habitat for Humanity" shows how we perceive a weak nation, and terrible people look since they don't have a home. I believe America has a problem with helping the less fortunate, because the expenses and cost of owning a house are so high, many people's general needs may have to be sacrificed. Imagine not having food to eat every day, fresh clothes to wear, a car, the list goes on and on. Our country is supposed to aid yet it seems like the U.S. just puts this issue to the side. The amount of poverty stricken areas in America ranks much higher than the amount of poverty in other nations. Most people living in poverty don't live in the rough and tough living conditions that the media paints them too, but it is still hard for them to make ends meet. I think the amount of poverty in the United States need to be decreased. Firstly, the cause of poverty is varied. Even though a person might have a job, the money that they make might not be enough to sustain himself or a family. Usually homeless Americans are discriminated against, shunned from society, denied chances, and even jobs. A key factor for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
