Shot Composition Activity
MARKING CRITERIA: CONSTRUCTION
• Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
• Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate;
These are three very important marking criteria from the AS mark scheme
and need to be thought about very carefully when shooting your opening.
Working in your groups and using a flip, carry out the following task:
Shoot a series of images of figures, objects and buildings using the
following compositional rules or guidelines:
1. A Long Shot (LS) and Close Up (CU) using the Rule of Thirds
2. A LS and Medium Shot (MS) using Leading lines

2. 3. A MS and LS using Symmetry & Patterns
4. Three different Viewpoints

3. 5. An Extreme Close Up (ECU) and LS using Backgrounds
6. An Establishing Shot using Depth
That is 12 shots in total so each member of the group should take at
least three shots each.
