Shapes
I. Shapes
An element of art that is defined as a two-dimensional area.
Has a variety of uses in the creation of art.
May be recognizable it by its area.
II. Types of Shapes
Geometric Shapes are man-made shapes that can be described using
mathematical formulas and concepts such as length, width, circumference, and
number of sides.
Organic Shapes, also called Freeform Shapes, are non-man made shapes that
are irregular and uneven, having outlines that are curved, angular, or both.
III. Positive and Negative Shapes
Can also be interpreted as spaces.
Separates shape from space.
Can produce interesting results such as optical illusions and subtle imagery via
emphasis on either positive or negative shapes.
IV. Complex Shapes
Can be drawn using basic geometric and organic shapes; simple shapes can be
used as a guide or basic outline.
May also be drawn using other elements of art (such as lines).
