Comics: The InvisibleArt, in their classes, and
the Department of Writing Arts fully em-
braces McCloud’s belief that a collaboration
between words and visuals can effectively
communicate a writer’s message. Writing
Arts and MA in Writing students are encour-
aged to experiment with multi-genre works
and to marry words and visuals together in
dynamic and compelling ways.
“Cartoons,” McCloud said in his public
lecture, “have a long relationship with com-
ics. They both reduce the world into simple
concepts. It’s writing with pictures.”
Students in both Art and Writing Arts
enjoyed learning about McCloud’s journey
to success and appreciated his advice and
encouragement about following their own
dreams and passions.

On Monday, February 20, cartoonist and
comic book theorist Scott McCloud
visited Rowan University as a guest speaker in
the President’s Lecture Series. McCloud pre-
sented an entertaining and energetic public
lecture in Boyd Recital Hall, visited a graphic
design class, and taught a master class for
Prof. Lisa Jahn-Clough’s course, Writing
the Graphic Novel. He engaged students in
discussions about their writing and graciously
and candidly answered questions they had
about his experience in the comics and pub-
lishing industry.
Writing Arts’ Jahn-Clough and Dr. San-
ford Tweedie worked with Special Events
Coordinator Christine Deehan to bring
McCloud to Rowan and to ensure that the
day ran smoothly. Both Tweedie and Jahn-
Clough use McCloud’s book, Understanding
Above: Scott McCloud.
PRaction, Rowan University’s student
public relations firm, provides PR
students with many opportunities to gain
experience in the public relations field. Each
semester, PRaction works with several cli-
ents, rangin at 5 p.m. every other Wednesday
