Topic: Structural Change in CFUV's Volunteer Process
2. About CFUV/ Intro
● CFUV is a not-for-profit radio station located at the University of
Victoria
● As a Campus and Community based station, CFUV relies on a
volunteer base of over 225 people which include both students
and community members
● All radio hosts are volunteers,
and the station offers a variety
of other volunteering
opportunities

Applying to be a volunteer on-air host
Don't want to be an on-air host? Well, there are
lots of other ways to volunteer, but right now
there isn't any clear way to get there, and it's
not clear to prospective volunteers exactly how
far they need to go down this training process if
they're not interested in being an on-air host...
4. Problems with the Process
● The Volunteer Process is focused on volunteers eventually
becoming programmers at CFUV, does not leave enough room for
other volunteer positions to be developed
● Large volunteer base, not enough tasks for new volunteers to be
engaged
● Not enough responsibility given to volunteers
5. Recent Changes
● The required initial volunteer hours have been changed from 6
hours to 4 hours
● Volunteer Interviews have been added to the process
● Volunteers are now instructed to read some training documents
before starting their Studio 1 Training (Introduction to
Broadcasting)
6. Solutions
We focused on changing 5 main aspects of the Volunteer Process:
1. Volunteer Applications
2. Orientation Documents
3. Interest-Directed Volunteer Hours
4. Volunteer Positions
5. Mentor Program
By changing these areas, the Volunteer Process will better reflect the
recent changes at CFUV and better support volunteer opportunities
outside of programming.
7. Change 1: Volunteer
Applications
● Volunteers are given the opportunity to fill out their application
online or in-person
● Using an online database will allow volunteers to express their
interests better and for those interests to be tracked
● Applications will include asking volunteers which department of
the station they are most interested in being a part of
● After completing the Orientation, interested volunteers can
submit an application and schedule an interview with the
Coordinator of Volunteers
8. Change 2: Orientation
Documents
● After finishing the Orientation, interested volunteers will be given
an initial package to read (online PDF or hard copy if requested)
outlining the mission statement and purpose of the station
○ This document will be 3-4 pages in length
○ The purpose of providing these documents is to clarify what
CFUV does and what we ask of our volunteers
9. Change 3: Interest-Directed
Volunteer Hours
● In their application, volunteers will note what area of the station
they wish to be involved in
● Departments with volunteering
opportunities include:
○ Music Department
○ Promotions
○ Audio Production
○ Clerical
○ Outreach
10. Change 4: Volunteer Positions
Volunteer Positions will change how CFUV operates and allow
volunteers to take on new responsibilities in the station. Several
positions have been created and need to be implemented within the
larger process.
They include:
● Podcasting Production Manager
● Audio Production Assistant(s)
● Music Library Assistant
● Outreach Assistant
● Vikes Music Coordinator
● Live Performance Tech
● Live Performance Apprentice
● Community Affairs Assistant
● Office Assistant
11. Change 5: Mentor Program
To give new volunteers a better picture of
the station and how it operates, they should
be paired with an experienced mentor.

13. Intended Benefits
● Increase volunteering opportunities while decreasing amount of
time CoV has to spend doing tasks that could be done by
volunteers
● Gives volunteers a sense of
ownership and accountability over
projects
● Increases volunteers' awareness
of the possibilities for them within
the station and allows them to find
a better fit
14. In Conclusion...
● How will the CoV measure whether this project improves the
volunteer process?
● How can the CoV increase other staff's participation in this new
program?
