2. Rahim Reading – techniques and technology
• Technology and culture have formed a feedback loop: advances in technology have accelerated
pace of innovations in architecture
• “To produce design innovation, architects cannot be passive recipients of technological change, but
must participate actively in this feedback loop”
• Therefore it is encouraged that we use programs that may not necessarily be designed for
architecture (modelling software) to explore new possibilities – “draw upon innovations of other
fields”
• Aim of techniques should not be final solution but instead development of more techniques
• Computers are not used merely as efficient tools to carry out practices, but have potential to
generate real time feedback and more dynamic interactivity between design and users, and also
have the ability to preserve complexity through all levels of design
• Ray and Charles Eames and Panton - Just as earlier generation of designers sought to grapple with
social, cultural, and economic realities of era of mass production, today's architects must fully
engage the conditions and possibilities of the digital age

3. Experiment 1 – Horizontal Drop
Parameters
• Dropped from approx 1200mm
• 80 degree release
• 60 pieces of “pasta” (approx 240mm at
1mm radius)
• No other variables applied other than
gravity
• Working with 200mm x 200mm grid
• Camera views clockwise: Top, Front,
Perspective, Left side view

4. Experiment 1 – Vertical Drop
Parameters
• Dropped from approx 1200mm
• 10 degree release
• 60 pieces of “pasta” (approx 240mm at
1mm radius)
• No other variables applied other than
gravity
• Working with 200mm x 200mm grid
• Camera views clockwise: Top, Front,
Perspective, Left side view

5. Experiment 1 – Horizontal and Vertical Drop Layered
Parameters
• Both from approx
1200mm
• 80 & 10degree
release
• No other variables
applied other than
gravity
• Pink – Vertical
• Blue – Horizontal
• Orbiting camera to
capture a range of
