2. Emergence as a Construct : History and Issues by Jeffrey Goldstein. (1999)
-What is it? – “arising of coherent structures and patterns during process of self organization in
complex systems”
-Occurs on Macro level – overall forms and basic functions
-Radical Novelty – cannot be anticipated
-Coherence or Correlation – can maintain a sense of identity
-Ostensive – all emergent phenomena will be different from previous ones – originality?
-Better to look at the emergence as an organization rather than the parts alone?
-Whole is greater than sum of parts
-Emergence – when configuration of components of a complex system offers more insight than the
explanation of the parts alone.
-“Therefore emergent phenomena are neither predictable form, deducible form nor reducible to the
parts alone” – you shouldn’t break it down to its parts without respecting that the parts come
together to create a whole?
-Complexity theory – developing tools, methods and constructs that make the process of
emergence less opaque – it’s about finding ways that allow us to analyse the systems?
-Is emergence merely a provisional construct? – can it only be used on a macro scale? (open
question)

3. Emergence as a Construct : History and Issues by Jeffrey Goldstein. (1999) (PAGE 2)
-Authentic emergent phenomena and serendipitous novelty (play of light on leaves in breeze) –
there is a difference
-“Need to be careful in our recognition of emergent phenomena and ask the question whether the
pattern we see is more in our eye than the pattern we are claiming to see”
-Emergence today is coming forth as a construct of complex dynamical systems – the exciting part is
the advances being made in understanding emergent phenomena (digital programming etc?)
-Complexity theory aims to provide a methodology and theoretical framework from emergence
phenomena

- Have chosen to use 3ds Max Design
-Gone through basic essentials tutorials (basic modelling, lighting, cameras, rendering etc)

5. PASTA EXPERIMENT
-Experimented with 2 types
-Dropping from 2 heights (600mm & 1200mm approximately)
-Captured in Plan, Detail and Elevation views
