Editor's Notes
Today’s presentation is around theme of Why - but taken from a different lens
Bryan Cranfills presentation a year or so ago
Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk
Any person can explain What they do
Some can explain how they are different or better
But few can explain why – which is not about money or profit but rather what inspires us
Recently Matt Patterson shared with me a Harvard Business Review titled how will you measure your life by Harvard Business Professor Clayton Christensen
This article along with the Simon Sinek provided my some hindsight into the changes I made in my career and how and why I am doing what I am doing today.
This is truly retrospective, as I did not strategically set my life purpose as suggested by Christiensen, but rather put the decisions I made into a context with which I can now share.
My story is completely different than many of you, but my hope is that this gives you some insight into who I am and an opportunity for you to reflect on your own journey.
Professor Christensen applying his management theory on businesses – which is essentially to help them think using scenarios and examples, not what to think
Asked his students these 3 questions.
Personally I have never been motivated by money
Built a very successful career on exactly this
Until I ran into a boss that was just this – completely opposite
For about a year, I spent time journaling, reflecting
Do not worry about your life and what you are to eat….
As in business, decisions are generally made for short term achievement and gratification.
Without truly understanding your life’s purpose, you can easily find your self make short term decisions rather than strategically allocating your resources to what is truly important.
