UTILIZATION OF CIGARETTE BUTTS IN CLAY BRICKS
1
2. INDRODUCTION
• Cigarette butt bricks are produced by blending cigarette butts with of materials
used for brick production. This is an innovative and practical solution for the
pollution problems caused by cigarette butt disposal .
• The percentage of cigarette butt addition is based on the purpose for which bricks
are being used. This is because a percentage of cigarette butts would lead to the
reduction of brick dry density and compressive strength .

CASE STUDY
• Through this method we can reduce the cost efficiency.
• This brick is energy efficient.
• Not only does the addition of cigarette butt cut brick production costs,
but also results in lighter bricks, with better insulation properties,
reducing household heating and cooling costs . This innovative method
of brick production makes bricks more environmentally friendly
product because it leads to decreased dumped cigarette buts and
reduces energy used during production process
4. ORGIN
● Students at the School of Engineering, RMIT University in Australia recently
published a study experimenting with a new form of waste management and recycling.
As they note in their research, cigarette butts are the most commonly discarded single
waste item in the world, with an estimated 5.7 trillion having been consumed around
the globe in 2016. However, the materials in cigarette butts—particularly their
cellulose acetate filters—can be extremely harmful to the environment due to poor
biodegradability.
● They made this study on a previous research by Mohajerani , lecture in RMIT
University in 2016

6. Preparation of Cigarette butts
● Cigarettes are not only hazardous for containing toxic chemicals , they also
filled with bacteria , both from the surrounding environment and from the users.
● The study found a UV light treatment provides a two-for-one cleansing
By both sterilising and deodorizing cigarette butts.
● Once purged of bacteria and smell, the cigarette butts are stored in a
sealed plastic bags .
6
7. PROCESS OF MAKING
● CB’s, clay and water are mixed thoroughly for
10-15 minutes.
● Required proportions of raw materials are
taken separately.
● The freshly prepared mix is pressed into the
mould .

8. ● As most of the local manufactures are producing brick of dimensions
210mm×110mm×70mm. The same dimension is adopted here for
production of bricks.
● All the brick samples are kept for drying for
5 days followed by 10 days sun firing.

9. COMPACTION AND COMPOSITION OF CB’s
● Compaction carried out to decrease the deformation potential and increase the
strength of soil materials of the brick. Since the degree of compaction is affected
by the amount of water present in the soil, compaction is carried out.

10. ● Density of cigarette butt Bricks is less than that of conventional bricks
without cigarette butts.
Physical Properties of Cigarettes Butt Brick
The following properties are valid for bricks with 10% cigarette butt content:
● Compressive strength of cigarette butt bricks is less than the conventional
bricks by more than 85%.
● Water absorption increases almost linearly with the increase of cigarette
butt content.
● Cigarette butt bricks have low porosity and shrinkage.
● Bricks are light and have good insulation capability.

11. Test Cigarette Butt Bricks with different replacement of Cigarette butts
The percentage of cigarette butt addition is based on the purpose for which bricks
are being used. This is because a high percentage of cigarette butts would lead to
the reduction of brick dry density and compressive strength

13. ●It gets that waste out of the environment.
●It makes bricks cheaper.
●Less energy-intensive bricks can be produced.
●The energy needed to fire bricks can be cut by up to 58%.
●Lighter and better insulator bricks are produced; meaning they could help cut
household cooling and heating demands.
●Bricks shrinkage, porosity, and thermal properties are improved.
Advantages of CB Brick
13
14. 14
Disadvantage of CB Bricks
• The compressive strength of CB brick with 7.5% and 10% is less than 5MPa
So they are not applicable for load bearing structures.
• CB bricks can’t be used in foundations.
15. CONCLUSION
• It can be concluded that the incorporation of CBs into bricks can be
beneficial in two main ways. Firstly, they can effectively solve the issue of
CB litter worldwide as recycled CBs can be placed in bricks without any
fear of leaching or contamination.
• Secondly, they are cheaper to produce in terms of energy requirements,
and as more CBs are incorporated the energy cost decreases further.
• CB bricks are a potential lightweight construction material, and its uses
and properties can vary depending on the quantity of CBs incorporated.
They can be both loadbearing and nonloadbearing, and some properties
can be improved with the incorporation of CBs including a reduction in
thermal conductivity.
