They Were Here
by: James Hubert
She woke up in the hospital two days later thinking she was safe, but he was
standing over her bed. The T.V. that was playing the news behind him illuminated his
dark figure. She could not believe it; the calamity that she caused was supposed to
make him go away. He was supposed to be gone. What the hell had she done wrong?
She closed her eyes and prayed that he would go away. This is what everyone
online had told her to do. This was how she was supposed to get him to go away! She
opened her eyes. The dark figure opened its mouth, it looked like a black hole. It looked
like nothing, and flew straight at her face. She screamed. She thought she was going to
die. Then, they started coming back to her. They told her she did it wrong; they said she
would never do it right. She did not understand; she had done it step by step. How could
it not have worked? She had done everything right: she had made the right knot, she
had made sure she would not be able to touch the ground, and she had called the cops.
Why was he still there? And why were they still here?
The doctor ran into the room.
“Miss what is the problem?” He rushed to grab more doctors. She was freaking
out and was frantic.
“They are back!” She screamed. “How did they get back!” Tears started to rush
down her face. At the same time it seemed that all of her muscles convulsed at the
same time. She shrieked and rolled into a ball.
“Miss nobody is here, what is the problem?” He acted very confused. She
grabbed his lab coat and looked him right in the eyes.

“How are they back?” Her eyes were looked like a black hole. “ Why didn’t you
stop him from coming to me?”
“Nobody is in your room, I don’t understand what the problem is!” The doctor was
so scared. She hadn’t woken up since she came in the hospital. He hadn’t even had
seen her yet. He rushed and grabbed her chart.
“Please help me!” She mumbled to the doctor. The doctor grabbed her chart and
he seemed to instantly calm down. He let out a massive sigh and looked at her.
“I need a nurse in here!” He signaled outside the room. He went to her bedside
and said, “You are going to be fine.”
She did not understand why he became so calm. “What does it say on the
chart?” She was so puzzled. The nurse came in with a needle.
“What is that?” She said. “What is that going to do to me.”
“Just relax.” The doctor said. She calmed down almost immediately.
“Close your eyes. Go to sleep.”
“How am I suppose to…” She felt herself drift away from reality.
She opened her eyes. The sun from the window shined directly at her face. It
was morning of the next day. It was like she had blinked and fallen asleep for twelve
hours, and then woken up. He was not there anymore and they were not here anymore.
It felt peaceful; she felt like she could hear and see everything. She noticed there were
a couple more bags attached to her IV. It was a new bag, one that she had never seen
before. She stared at it, noticing it had a different color than the rest of the bags. She
looked outside her room and saw all the doctors walking frantically throughout the hall.
A woman passed by her room. She saw her in slow motion; her senses were so

enhanced since they were gone. The woman was crying, running down the hall. Her
eyes were as red as rose. She looked like she had been crying for awhile. She was a
wearing a grey dress. She must have been at a party the girl thought. A doctor had
walked up to the women and said something. In one moment her face went from sad to
emotionless. She looked like she had left her body and had stared back at herself. A
doctor walked into her room and went right in the front of her view. Her eyes took a little
too focus on the doctor.
“Hello miss, how was your sleep?”
“What did you people give me?”
“It’s nothing to be worried about, how are you doing?” She realized that they wer
not there anymore.
“Where did they go? How did you get rid of them?” She said with a smile on her
face.
“Excuse me?” The doctor said
“They are gone, did you find them and get rid of them?”
“That is one thing I need to ask you, who are they?” She was very confused on
how the doctors did not see him. He literally was standing right in front of her bed.
“You didn’t see him when he was standing in front of my bed?”
“Who is he?”
“The man in the dark suit!”
“The man in the dark suit?”
“Yeah, he’s been following me for a very long time. How couldn’t you have seen
him?” The doctor looked concerned. He looked down at the floor for a couple of

seconds. He looked back up.
“Why don’t you just stay here, i’m gonna go try to figure out what is going on ok?”
The smile he had on looked fake.
“Ok…” The doctor left the room and she fell asleep. She never saw her doctor
again.
She woke up the next day. This time she had slept for almost sixteen hours. She
thought she had to have been drugged again. It was weird; it was an all white room with
pretty pictures on the wall. She looked out her window and saw beautiful trees. It was so
peaceful. She could see all the people outside of her room and thought about how
happy they looked. She wondered why these doctors looked so much happier than the
one’s she’d seen before. She felt like she was in heaven. It seemed like such a happy
setting. Then, a doctor started wheeling a patient by my room. He looked sad. He
turned his head and looked over at her and it seemed that he was about to cry. Right
before he was out of her sight she noticed his arms had bandages on the wrists. They
were red, he must had been bleeding through it. She looked back up at his face. They
meet eyes and she never forgot his face. His eyes were glossed over, a single tear went
down his face. He looked like he was staring death in the face saying “I’m not ready to
go yet.” She looked over and there were even more meds on her IV than before. She
was never told about new treatments by her doctor.
“Hello! How are you doing on this fin day.” A new doctor walked into the room
and looked as happy as ever.
“I’m a little confused but, I feel pretty good.”

“Why are you confused”
“I just woke up in this new room. Where exactly am I.” She said with a smile on
her face. The doctor laughed.
“ You’re in a new hospital. One that will fit your needs better.” He said with
confidence.
“What do you mean my needs?” THe doctor looked at her puzzled. How many
times will a doctor give her the same look?
“For your problems. You know for “them”. Isn’t that what you call them.”
“I don’t understand. I feel great. I think i’m ready to go home” He seemed
disappointed in himself. He tapped his hands on his legs.
“You know what, I’m gonna go get someone that can explain to you what is going
on ok?”
“Umm… ok. Sounds good.” She said with a sense of confusion. “ Will I see you
again?”
“ I’ll be back after I get someone to talk to you.”
“ Ok then.” She sat there and was trying to figure out what was going on. What
was wrong with her. They made them go away so what is the problem? SHe spent the
ten minutes it took for the doctor to come looking at her surroundings. Her view out her
window was so nice. The sun was shining directly into her room. It was so bright the
light was not even on in her room. The new guy came into her room.
“Hello, I’m roger.” He put his hand out to shake her hand. She stared at his hand,
she didn’t know who he was. She scared him a little. He was in a very nice looking suit.

“Did my doctor send you in here?”
“Yes! He did.”
“ So why are you here? I told him I feel great and that I want to go home.”
“That’s what i’m here to talk to you about. We don’t know who you are talking
about when you say “they” or “he”.”
“What do you mean?” Her face looked very confused.
“ The man said that was in your room. Nobody saw him, In fact, it was only you
who saw him”.
“I don’t understand”
“ Why don't we start from the beginning. What do the voices in your head say?”
