American Dream Clean is a janitorial services company with a social mission to help low-income and minority employees' children graduate from college. It does this by using profits from its cleaning business to fund tutoring programs for employees' kids. The tutoring helps close achievement gaps and keeps children on track academically for college. American Dream Clean looks for tutors who are passionate about education, can balance firmness and kindness, create "aha" learning moments, and have a track record in relevant academic subjects. Tutors commit to tutoring sessions of 2-3 hours per week virtually to fit into their schedules. They receive some training and support through a network of other tutors.

Our Business & Mission:
American Dream Clean LLC is a mission-driven janitorial services company that
delivers exceptional cleaning quality competitively priced while making a
difference by putting company resources into initiatives that ensure our
employees’ at-risk kids graduate from college.
We believe that a sound business model can be combined with a social mission
to make dramatic improvements in one of our nation's most intractable problems:
ensuring every child has access to a good education and a path to college. Our
janitorial business creates the resources that enable us to offer education
services that keep our employees' kids on track to college; our employees reward
our caring thru higher loyalty and engagement, which translates to superior
quality, service, and ultimately highly satisfied customers. In other words,
combining our business model and mission model allows each to soar to heights
neither one alone could achieve.
Leading thinkers have shown convincingly that business can play a vital role in
addressing social problems. We are excited to be part of that wave of innovation
and positive change. We invite you to be part of that journey with us!
Our Tutors Make a Difference!
There are roughly 11 million school-aged children in poverty and the odds of
college graduation are stacked against them—only about 9% of kids in poverty
graduate from college. The implications for those kids’ life chances are dramatic.
A bachelor’s degree is like a winning lottery ticket, with college graduates earning
roughly $1 million dollars in earnings in excess of their peers with only a high
school degree. American Dream Clean hires employees from these low income
and minority populations; we commit to a journey with our employees and their
kids in which we surmount the odds.
One of the most profound problems that impedes our kids’ success is that their
academic performance typically falls off track at a very early age and they never
catch up. Schools move on to new and more advanced topics over time,
meanwhile our kids who already lacked mastery of prior topics fall further and
further behind. Our tutors close these gaps in achievement thru their time and
considerable talent, thereby ensuring our kids stay academically on track for
college.

How Our Tutors Do It:
Our tutors are bright, talented and incredibly passionate about making a
difference. But they are not seasoned—they haven’t put in the years of toil that
hone the craft of teaching—and they don’t have to be. Our tutors leverage world-
class educational content and technology to deliver the stuff of teaching that
typically takes years of practice to perfect (lesson planning, delivering beautiful
lessons, etc.). This approach frees up our tutors to spend their energy guiding the
academic and personal evolution of their tutee. For instance, learning something
new is hard, and our tutors are the critical resource to tutees when they get stuck.
Our tutors provide the encouragement and the hands-on, one-on-one interactions
that ensure that the light bulb goes on for their tutee even when t didn’t happen
thru lectures, homework, etc.
What Do We Look for in Our Tutors:
• Passion is a Must – you have to care about the cause and how your work
contributes. You need to carry the message of the importance of
education and model that in your interactions with your tutee—in many
cases, you’ll be one of the few adults in this young person’s life who is a
source of light on these topics.
• Balancing Firmness and Kindness – you are responsible for holding high
standards for your tutee (speaking honestly and accurately about how
they’re performing and what they need to do to improve), while at the
same time demonstrating the empathy, understanding, and fairness that
builds a trusting, collaborative relationship.
• “Aha” Moments – You need to weave together your particular strengths in
how you think, communicate, etc. with an evolving appreciation of your
tutee’s learning style/preferences to create the optimal path to “aha”
learning moments.
• Academic Track Record – this is relevant primarily if your tutee has a
college preparatory high school course load. It’s in those cases that tutors
have mastery of the associated subjects, most often evidenced by
progressing in those same subjects in their own college coursework.
FAQs:
• What is the time commitment? Tutors vary their involvement based on
their own availability, etc., but we require a minimum commitment of 2-3
hours per week (roughly 1 hour to deliver the tutoring session, which might
require 1-2 hours of preparation and/or follow-up work).

• Do I meet my tutee in person? No, this is one of the greatest advantages
to both parties. Leveraging technology, we can connect any of our kids in
need to a capable tutor wherever they are in the world. Most of our tutors
do their sessions right from the comfort of their dorm room so tutoring fits
easily and simply into the tempo of their lives.
• Will I have training and support? Some. You’ll be part of a network of other
like-minded tutors and will have the opportunity to collaborate and share
best practices. You can raise questions/concerns directly to the leadership
at American Dream Clean, and we’ll ensure you get the support you need.
But honestly this is an area where we would like to do more and over time
we’ll build out some clever and more structured ways to develop our
tutors.
