benefit from in various aspects of everyday life, based on nothing more than the colour of their

friend of mine who goes to University of Montana had a roommate Freshman year who was on a
full–ride scholarship because she was partially Native American. She did not care for her studies,

race" (P.6) In an accurate and inoffensive way she illustrates racism and extends it beyond the
individual, placing blame on the greater American social structure. Throughout the development of
her definition she places great emphasis on the fact that racism, like sexism, is something exhibited

The concept of racism has always been seemingly foreign to me. As well, I can sadly remember
questioning whether or not white privilege exists. In my ignorance, I questioned this in almost the
exact same manner as the guy does to Professor Hunk in Ifemelu's blog post "What Academics
Mean by White Privilege. I even pondered the question the guy asks: "Why must we all talk about
race..."(429). This blog offers a beautiful, understandable explanation of what white privilege is to
both gift to those who have difficulty expressing the issue with their lighter skinned friends and to

Shopping in an upscale store my credit limit has been questioned; a visit to a white salon would not
afford me services. Most often white stylist are unable to style or treat African American hair due to
their lack of knowledge. In the event a white client visits an African American they can receive
services due to the African American stylist having the knowledge to style and treat all hair. White
